  1. I've had my camera for 14 months.

7 months into ownership I had a lens error problem. It happened about 6 times.... I looked up a fix on the web (had to do a pretty deep search to find it) and haven't had the problem again.

TRY THIS- with the camera turned off, hold down the "FUNC SET" button and instead of using the power button on top of the camera to turn on the camera, push the 3rd button above the display screen (It has a picture of a blue arrow pointing to the right...and is the button you can use to turn your camera on when you just want to view your photos on the camera's display screen)... If you press both these buttons together, the camera will turn on with a display of a strange digital clock on the screen.

Next just push the button in the middle (again referring to the 3 buttons above the screen, it has a icon picture of a camera and a movie camera)... it opens up your lens even if you have gotten the "lens error" message. ;)

The only other tip I tried... (before I found the one I just described above)... was to point the camera at the ground and bump it against your leg as if you were trying to shake out same sand or dirt (even though the housing is sealed). For some reason this helped. And I even tried taking out the battery and getting a full charge before turning on the camera. All of these things helped. But once I found the trick about a new way to turn on the camera.... I was thrilled and after doing that a few times, never had the problem again. I turn the camera on the normal way now. No problems in the last 7 months.

  2. I haven't yet, but I did just enter 20 photos in a DAN contest. Here are three of my favorites:

If you post them, let us know. I'd love to see them all. Best I've seen on cruisecritic :)

I made a coffee table book (from Panraven.com) with my trip photos from last year.... and its been a big hit with my friends and family. I really liked it, because I never know how to best display all my JPEG pictures when I get home. Making my own book turned out to be a great solution.

  3. Thank you for the information. We just booked a cruise for 2012 that will being us there for the first time. It looks like a nice, relaxing day. We love to snorkel so we will be watching for more snorkel updates before we decide whether to snorkel from the beach or take the excursion.:)

For us the only negative to the boat snorkel excursion, was that the reef was small. It was a great reef and clear water, but if you just swim over the top once and are done, it might seem like a short trip. I swam the reef a second time and dove down and got looking at the individual corals and found neat individual fish and watched them for a few minutes each... and played around with my camera and thought it was a great snorkel trip. But I could see how other more casual snorkelers might have just swam over the top of the reef once and thought that was it. (so it could go either way depending on how you like to snorkel)

  4. Just want to say I loved your scrapbook -- it was beautifully done! Great underwater photos. I wanted to see if you'd been on the same Ruby cruise we were on. Nope!

Thanks... I had a new camera (Canon D10) and it was my wife's idea to try a scrapbook, we got lucky and it came out really good :D

What's funny is that I saw in your signature that you are going to Disney next. Kind of off topic... but I just added all my Disney photos to a second scrapbook. If you want to check it out- ;) http://www.panraven.com/mylife/ViewStory.epage?sp=161914&

  5. It looks like this hotel ...in Tahiti.

Thanks :D that does look like it. I'll do a little more digging.

My wife and I have done all the Caribbean islands and now want to start with the Pacific islands so I'm just trying to figure out where to start from. But my wife found this photo and has it hanging in her office. I thought it would be funny if I could figure out where it was. And I knew the experts on CruiseCritic might be able to help me track it down ;)

  6. Being in the elctrical business, I loved the look of this...

My friend on our trip took the same photo. She was also in the business :D I think we were on Grenada

  7. I was trying to take a picture of the Lanai deck on the Dream.

Thanks, great photo. What deck was your cabin on?

I was thinking about going on the dream and wanted a balcony (not sure about the cove, wife likes to sun) but interested in what decks are best for being high enough up to see over the lanai to the water, and not hear any noise from below.

Do they keep the lights on all night so you can't see the waves at night? Thanks!

  8. Your pics look good, Thanks :) I think I will probably order this camera for the days we snorkel. Wildlife photography is my hobby so hopefully I will be able to keep up with some of the fishies :D

Great! We will want to see some of those photos when you get back! ;)

  9. I am considering picking up one of these for our

upcoming cruise. Not sure if any of you are also SLR users but my main camera is a

Canon 40D, do you think I will be happy with the image quality of the D10? Any

    advice would be appreciated :)

No SLR experience for me... I'm just a point-and-shoot guy :D

My last camera was a PowerShot SD400 Elph 5 mega pixal and the D10 is just as

easy to use...but I thought it was a big step-up in picture quality and artificial

intelligence. Its a smart Carma... I'd call it idiot proof.

I"m not sure if I was impressed with image quality or just the versatility. During my

Dominica trip... I took photos in a cave, in the water, while it was raining, in pitch

dark rooms with bright sunlight shining through the roof. And had to tuck the

camera in the inside sleeve of my wetsuit against my forearm to keep it from being

crushed as we repelled down rock walls in the dark and jumped off water falls.

Pretty versital little package. Here's my photos if you hadn't seen them

The only downside is that the camera is brand new for 2010... and I'm sure

improvements will be made in the 2011 model... so I'm assuming it will only get

better the longer you wait. (I'm talking about improvements in durability, my

camera worked great, but I babied it). You have to give Canon credit for making a

everyday digital camera that works in saltwater. Saltwater and electronics just

don't go together....might as well be putting it in acid.

What I found most interesting, when you first try to take photos underwater...is the

fish don't sit still for a second! The water is moving you all around, and there is

nothing to steady against! So the fact that my photos weren't a total blur is quite

impressive to me. (This Rock Beauty was my only bad photo...but he was motoring

by at 25mph, and did not want me to take his photo! But I chased him down LOL)

  10. Thanks for the link. I'll definitely be checking them out. Here's the link for mine. LINK :)That D10 has me very intrigued. :)

Hi Dave, I took a look at your photos, thanks :D I liked IMG 2624 the best. I made it into my screen saver (a bunch of blue minnows sparkling in the waves and sunshine).

As for the D10 it worked so perfect for me. But I have a rule, I hate to buy new products the first year they come out (always room for quick improvement by the second year). You are already getting good photos. I'd give Canon another year to really perfect this camera. I didn't have any underwater option so I took a chance and it paid off, but its so tricky making a camera that works in saltwater. I'm sure the D10 will just keep getting better, from lessons learned.

Small world.... you Quarry photos bring back good memories for me...I learned to scuba in 1977 back in the quarries in Bloomington Indian, we had ice and snow when we did are final certification dives ( I should have taken the class in the summer)

And I saw the photo of your dog, it almost looks like mine... I have a Dachshund/Basenji mix..... he's on page 148, 149 of my photo book.

  11. Very nice! I'm using a Canon Powershot as well...an A630.We LOVE Canon cameras. Here are a couple of my favorite underwater shots.

Hi Dave, thanks for posting, great pics!

Do you have a on-line photo album? I'd love to see the rest of your underwater photos :D

Here's a link for my photos, if you'd like to see more. (Powershots are great cameras) :)

ONE TIP- if you click on the small arrows below the cover photo, you can see 2 pages at a time, which give a better panoramic view.

  12. Wow, markstudy. Those are very cool. :)

Thanks... I'm glad you liked them :)

When we weren't goofing around taking photos of each other

we did get a few pics of the fish also. This was my favorite
