  1. A fellow chemist, perchance? I'm really looking forward to it. I'm excited that there were humpbacks in May - I thought it might be a bit early for anything but Orcas.
  2. Thanks! (I'm a bit surprised that they don't go to Nugget Falls while at the glacier; you can learn almost everything there is to learn about a camera by photographing a waterfall!)
  3. Has anyone taken the excursion that’s specifically tagged as featuring photography guidance? How was it? Do you go up to the waterfall at Mendenhall Glacier? (I do love photographing waterfalls!)
  4. The Aurora will be more visible towards the North, in general, but the display is likely to span from northeast to northwest, so if the ship is sailing north or south, either side is equally fine. A really strong outburst will reach up overhead. I’ll hope for a good strong outburst for you. You can check on the website spaceweather and it will show you a map with what’s called the auroral oval superimposed on it: a graphic that shows where the Aurora should be visible, and how strong the display is.
  5. Sadly, Avis doesn't open their cruiseport location until later in the season - we're there in early May. Does anyone know if there are UBER's from the port to the airport in Juneau? I tried finding one on the app and got "nothing available".
  6. This is a rumor only, not personal experience, but it's worth a try, since we're in a Solar Maximum period: Talk to the ship's naturalist about aurora notifications - it you want to be woken up, they may set up a notification on the cabin phone network. If that's done, there may also be the possibility that they dim or extinguish some non-essential (non-navigation!!!) lights. It can't hurt to ask, and to get anyone you talk to on ship to ask as well!
  7. That's true of some excursions, but there are others where you do get off the train to visit the Klondike, so you'll definitely need your passport for entry into Canada and return to the U.S. for those.
  8. New to Cruise Critic: Can I search the "live from" posts for cruiseline, ship, destination etc.? I have really enjoyed reading some of them, but I'd like to focus on ones relevant to the cruise I've booked (14 day Alaska next spring) Thanks!
  9. Thank you soooo much for giving me my first opportunity to say - without being slapped, too! - "I think you need to clear your cookies" !!!!!
  10. Oh, and also (yeah, that's me above, too!): Once I book and pay my deposit, can my travel agent book Club Orange on the spot so that I can change to the upgraded cabin right there in her office in one visit? Or do I have to wait for the club orange booking to come through? Thanks so much to everyone on this thread - it has been great!!!
  11. Newbie here: How do I know what constitutes a "one category upgrade"? The stateroom I really want on the Niew Amsterdam is VA 8092. Do I "book" a VB in order to upgrade to VA? or are they non-alphabetical? HELP 🙂🤪
  12. With Club Orange stateroom upgrades, do you pick your stateroom, or do you get offered a specific stateroom in your upgrade class?
