  1. Interesting on the slips. I honestly haven't seen it on the various ships I have been on since they eliminated the "clinking of the coins in the bucket".
I haven't seen a slip of paper come out of a slot machine on any the 13 HAL ships we've been on, including the O-dam, and have always had to use a key-card and PIN since the old coin machines were eliminated.
  2. Has anyone noticed any difference in the quality and speed of service between fixed seating and "as you wish" seating?

    DD

We haven't done Fixed in about 9 years so I don't remember that, but we have experienced a wide variation in Open seating on different ships depending on where the table was located. It seems to me that when are near a serving station the service is better. It was poor on the Koningsdam at table 208. And yes, that was Open seating. The K has Open on both levels. Maybe that was the problem.

p.s. - the term As You Wish includes both Fixed and Open. Any Time Dining is a better synonym for Open.

  3. The lower price is probably a "guarantee" rate.
Nope. The 399 is a 'from' price. Using Chrome I see it stay at 399 when selecting certain rooms (8005,8007,8147,8148,8151,8161) but go to 419 when choosing 8011,8014,8015,8130,8131,8132,8133,8135. The 399 are VF while the 419 are VE.
  4. Hopefully if you go via the ship they won't make you stop for a half hour each way in one of the tatty villages (Arachova or Levadia) -- an hour's time wasted.
The forced shopping stops are one of my main gripes with almost all ship's tours.
  5. What about the newest ship Koningsdam....how is the internet on that ship? Do they offer packages ...
Performance-wise it's like other HAL ships, and the time is sold in the same tiers that have been standard for years: 100 min for $55, 250 min for $100, 500 min for $175, 1000 min for $250, or $0.75 PAYG
  6. Because EASA ( the EU version of FAA) in accordance with ICAO regulations, tells airports that within a certain zone ( I do not have my books here, so can't explain in detail) all obstructions, like fences, lights, etc must be frangible. This is in case of an "undershoot" or "overshoot" where an aircraft will either land or come to rest in the area adjacent to the runway. ( RESA Runway End Safety Area).

Because a chain link fence is frangible - if a landing plane hit the fence it would damage the plane, but probably not destroy it. OTOH, a blast fence (what you are referring to) has to be firmly implanted into the ground and have sufficient structure to withstand takeoff jet blast. Hitting that upon landing would result in a major accident.
Okay, then how about steel plates that can be raised and lowered under tower control for engine rev-up for takeoffs like Sequim88 suggested?
  7. Westerdam has had the packages for quite a while- I believe a couple of years. Packages were very reasonable. Not understanding why only on one ship.
It wasn't just Westerdam. I know Zuiderdam had unlimited-time packages for a while. Apparently it didn't work as well financially for HAL or the concessionaire as the block time options, and was scrapped.

I enquired at a social gathering how many would stay in a hotel without free wifi -- no one. People expect it nowadays and even the smallest B & B or vacation rental seems to provide it.
High speed connections on a land line can be provided at considerably less cost than on a satellite connection.
  8. from Tampa and stopping in K West, Bermuda and Azores make the transatlantic a nice broken trip. So it really isn't a long stretch at sea. I liked the new ideas on the K but did a transatlantic on the Prinsendam and enjoyed the smallest of the HAL fleet ships but I do think a young couple would like the K. I would go for the itinerary on the Rotterdam but.............................
