  1. NCL isn't the first cruise line to restrict smoking and won't be the last. Anyone who has paid attention the last several years should have seen the handwriting on the wall. Smokers are a dwindling minority and the number of places at sea and on land, in the US and elsewhere, that have prohibited or severely restricted smoking is growing steadily.

Anyone expecting things to change because of a letter or email writing campaign is living in a fantasy world.

Actually a letter/email/posting campaign has persuaded the Powers that be at Carnival to make changes to their smoking sections and perhaps change the rules about e-cig use. We are still waiting to hear the formal announcement at what is being done but enough smokers complained to at least make them look at the issue

  2. I think everyone agrees that NCL determines where the smoking and non-smoking areas are, and in your case, the crew member moved the smoking section from the inaccessible side to the accessible side. You were not in the no smoking area, you were in the new, albeit temporary smoking area. So no harm on your part or the crew member's part. No puppies were killed in the making of the new smoking area.

    I like you :)

  3. So expecting a smoker to not smoke on the non smoking side is now my way or the highway?

Sorry but No waycan the non smoking side be turned into the smoking side. Especially if a non smoker is sitting there the smoker is the one who must refrain not the other way around

You can't actually think its ok to smoke on the starboard while the port is being cleaned can you? Come on think clearly here.

How long could it take to clean it really?

A smoker can't refrain but Instead goes to smoke on the non smoking side? Possibly offending non smokers? Really is it that important to smoke at that very moment?

Hmm.... Talk about my way or the highway. Lol it is the smoker who is playing that card not me or any other non smoker sitting in the non smoking section

And btw when I mistakenly realize I am on the smoking side I just turn around and leave it

And if not possible I walk thru briskly and will put put a hand to my nose and mouth

Why? Because it is too smoky not to

No need to wave hands as hands are better utilized over mouth and nose

I am really having trouble thinking that you or any normal thinking human would actually feel the smoker has the right to infringe on the non smoking side because it will be a few minutes until the smoking side is cleaned. Really?

Apparently yes the "non-smoking" side can be turned temporarily into a "smoking" area if the folks in authority..I.E. NCL Crewmembers deem it so. Personally its not my circus, not my monkeys.

  4. [quote name='luvtheships']Nice so I guess you are saying then that if you are smoking in the non smoking area because the cleaning crew said it was ok and a non smoker was there because it was a non smoking section that you would still continue to smoke anyway.

I guess you feel the non smoker must put their vacation on hold for you a smoker who is smoking in the non smoking area for whatever reason

The non smoker would just have to deal with it I suppose or take time to go find someone to report it to

    Again nice very nice

Thanks for replying as you basically prove the non smokers point

Do you inconsiderately walk through the smoking section and give people dirty looks and wave and cough?

Personally crew or not if I was in a non-smoking section I would refrain from smoking...However by authority of the crew asking her to move to other side with ashtray I do believe that just made the non-smoking section a smoking section for a short time.

The my way or the highway attitude that you are promoting is why this topic has turned so ugly. If people would simply try to be more kind and considerate and less rude on both sides of the fence the world would be a much nicer place
  5. While I can't speak to what the poster was thinking. It's likely that they are suggesting that an advertiser or user can claim something is harmless right up until the point that it is proven harmless. Proving harmfulness takes time and history has shown this to have devastating effects with asbestos, cigarettes, topical creams and medicines, food additives, medications, environmental pollution...

It's a health conscious, conservative stance to allow people to protect themselves with some additional limitations. If in 20-30 years the e-cigs are still not deemed (through medical science) harmful, then it's likely that the cruise lines will gladly hand back some additional locations to utilize them and likewise, non-smokers will have less resistance as well.

Personally I like the better safe than sorry route. E Cig users can still use them. It would be nice for the cruise lines to consider that their use is often to curtail the cigarette habit and provide a separate area for their use that doesn't tempt anyone to go back to the more harmful option.

Bottom line, though, is that the cruise line is there to protect "the many" and themselves. They are a business and don't owe smokers or ecig users anything except what they choose to offer them.

Yep...Just like smokers and e-cig users don't owe the business one dime of our money. God forbid a compromise could be reached based on current available science of e-cig vapor being harmless when used outdoors

  6. Only 2 quick comments:

    1. As to the casino, there are only X number of seats (or places) around the tables, and only Y number of machines. When at least part of X & Y are occupied by non-smokers, the fact is that preventing all of the smokers onboard to congregate around those tables & machines, in fact will be safer than allowing it.

    2. To you, those 'flavors' sound appealing. To people who are scent-sensitive, those 'flavors' - also known as 'smells', may induce migraines. Plus, I'm not convinced that the science is in yet, on having to inhale the chemicals which produce those smells - not as a user who has chosen to do so, but by an innocent by-stander who is forced to do so by somebody else's choice.

I'm just saying...a stick of gum would help the smoker just as much, and wouldn't have any potential harm to bystanders.

    .

Kind of hard to get nicotine out of a stick of gum. Well unless it was nicorette in which case the reaction bystanders would get from me would be much worse then my e-cig as nicorette makes me violently ill

  7. In the letter I had said that I wouldn't be cruising anymore on lines where balcony smoking was not allowed. I have one booked for November, and told them that since I couldn't cancel flights, I would go, but would not spend anything on NCL sponsored shore excursions, drinks, gift shop purchases etc.

I explained that I did agree with no cabin smoking, but felt that NCL and other lines were not willing to accommodate this minority, who also spend their disposable income, by allowing some cabins to be balcony smoking, with the understanding that when you booked, you had no right to complain one way or the other depending on which type you booked. The person I spoke with did not have a specific set of questions, we discussed my opinion, the opinions of non smokers and industry wide changes- the main concern I felt, was my saying I would not cruise again. I'm not a person who only does cruises, but I did enjoy the freestyle cruising offered by NCL. I also pointed out that in my opinion, smoking being allowed only while actively gambling was nothing more than a cash grab, and did not correspond with their "policy" of making the cruise safer for all customers. In regards to the e-cigarettes- which I have used, I explained that I felt this was totally ridiculous- if it looks like a duck- it must be a duck?? Anyone who has used them knows that a great majority of them look nothing like a cigarette- and for the ones that do-right back to the duck!! And a great many of the people who use them do not use nicotine- that is an option- it is not standard in all e-cigarettes. They also range in flavors from bubble gum and cinnamon, to pipe tobacco and cigarette flavor.

I try not to post on here because, as I pointed out to her, there are smokers with strong opinions, and non smokers with strong opinions- to say one is right or wrong is very narrow minded. Any one of a number of groups is in the "minority" in society. I just want to be given the option to smoke- on a balcony that I also have paid for- and of their choosing if that is the case.

And yes- I've heard all the comments- good- stay home, more balconies for us non smokers. Again- you have the right to have that opinion. I also have a right to mine. I am fine with all inclusives, bus tours in Europe, there are so many other options out there. I will not stop travelling, I will just travel differently.

I think if they would just change their policy to allow e-cigarettes on balconies it would be a win/win for everyone

  8. I assume you mean on the ship - yes. Airline-no.

NCL will not open your bag. If they see something on the xray, they hold it for you.

By the way, we have never locked ours.

Actually Airline Yes if you use the TSA locks that have the generic key for TSA to open

  9. I meant stop with the complaining. I'm not breaking any rules and have no intention of breaking any rules so I don't know what your complaining about. Why don't you wait and see what happens when the new rules take effect. Your complaining even BEFORE something if anything happens. Your preparing yourself to start reporting people who haven't even done anything yet. Who said they are stupid rules? Rules will be followed I believe by smokers. I'm sure there will be a couple who don't follow them and they will be dealt with by NCL not you or other passengers. Your arguing just to argue when nothing has happened.

I'm a smoker and plan on smoking in the casino. I will see whose sitting next to me and see if it bothers them. I'm confident we can be adults and work out something that will work for both myself and a non smoker sitting beside me. But understand you have no right to demand a person smoking in the casino can't.

Actually my dilemma is if I am sitting at a non-smoking table (sometimes I can only get a seat at non-smoking) or if I am sitting at a smoking table with a non-smoker that would be bothered if I smoke, I have the dealer give me a marker and sit out a couple of hands while I retreat to the smoking section (or step away from the table), smoke my cigarette, then return. I'm wondering if NCL will continue to accomodate in this manner. I don't think they would save my seat long enough for me to run upstairs to deck whatever, smoke, then come back down

  10. Why stop? Read the posts and many smokers are all suggesting ways to break the rules. Now they are the ones that should stop.

Please just put me on ignore if you choose but if you are implying that non smokers should just ignore it when smokers threaten to smoke on balconies and crowd the casino then the one to stop is not me it is you.

But yes it is best to just keep our head in the sand than to stand up for ones rights

The whole country seems to feel that way apparantly too

But nonetheless the ship rules favor the non smokers.

I don't make those rules btw. However I will follow them because they are not stupid rules and only benefit cruisers not hurt them

I find this post highly amusing because you want me to keep my head in the sand and not speak up for my rights. Smoking is allowed in the casino. All I did was offer tips to smokers to work WITHIN NCL rules. As I said if you don't like that perhaps you should find an alternative activity

  11. Tough to enjoy oneself if smokers are breaking the rules that cause others to be uncomfortable or in danger ( as in flicking butts on another balcony)

Key word is " breaking the rules". Smoke all you want but don't do it where you are not supposed to

I follow rules so why should the smokers do the same in the casino?

Of course the casino is someplace you are supposed to. If you are unhappy or uncomfortable with that might I suggest finding an alternative activity for yourself

  12. I'm not alone trust me

It's funny how it is now zealous to want the rules enforced. Lol

Is it also zealous to not give a 16 year old a beer?

Or tell the crew about a dangerous situation on deck where someone might slip?

It's so sad that you think expecting rules to be followed and enforced is now the domain of the zealous.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Yes it is. Most people are too busy enjoying themselves and having a great time on a cruise to worry about some dad giving his 16 year old son a beer or someone sitting in the casino for 5 minutes smoking a cigarette.

  13. It seems like some of the smokers are trying to one up the non-smokers with their nastiness and their I'll show you attitude and some of the non-smokers are trying to one up the smokers with their nastiness and their I'll show you attitude and if they continue, there will never be a solutiion to the issue. All it is doing is drawing a longer and bigger line in the sand and making folks take sides.

BTW, thanks for being one of those considerate smokers who would ask if it bothered someone, before you lite up, even though it is not required in a smoking area, it is really appreciated. The only smoker I encountered on my last cruise in the casino, asked that same question and I said, no, but would you please keep the ashtray on the other side. We ended up gambling for a couple of hours together having a great time. Just proves that smokers and non-smokers can get along, as long as there is respect on both sides.

I cruise with my mom who is a former smoker with COPD...She has a tendency to smack me upside the back of my head if I am impolite. I try very hard not to be cause that hurts ;) LOL

  14. IMHO, once the spirit and sun classes are ready to be replaced, Norwegian may look into a 100,000 ton vessel class. I doubt we will EVER see a new mid size Norwegian new build again. Kevin Sheehan has stated time and time again that they are not economically sound to operate. Even Holland America, the mid size KING has not been able to profitably operate all S class and R class ships on a consistent basis.

My favorites are actually the Jewel class...The Jewel in particular. Hope they never consider getting rid of those

  15. Just saw this and hoping to get opinions as to whether it is worth it or not to you?

    Norwegian: New All-Inclusive Package

    on 30 July 2014.

Norwegian Cruise Line is debuting a new All-Inclusive package, providing guests another way to customize their cruise vacation.

Representing more than $2,400 in value per stateroom, Norwegian’s All-Inclusive package is a first for major cruise lines, and is available for a limited time for all 2015 sailings fleetwide (see fine print), for new reservations made from August 4, 2014 through August 29, 2014. The comprehensive package includes signature dining, alcoholic beverages, unlimited soda, shore excursions, internet access, service charges and more.

“Based on the popularity of our Fly, Cruise and Stay vacations, along with our onboard dining and beverage packages, we are now offering the first All-Inclusive package for our guests who want to experience all that the freedom and flexibility of Freestyle Cruising has to offer,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “Always an innovator, we are making it easy for those that want everything included in their cruise vacation with the option of our All-Inclusive package.”

The All-Inclusive package is available for 2015 sailings from three to 14 days in length, is priced by the number of days, and is available for all stateroom categories, including the Haven by Norwegian. When adding the All-Inclusive to a selected cruise, guests receive 10 percent off the cruise fare.

For a seven-day cruise, the $899 package includes the Ultimate Dining package; the Ultimate Beverage package; shore excursion credit of $200 per person, pre-paid daily service charges; a 250-minute Internet package per person; 20 photos of any size; chocolate-covered strawberries; a bottle of wine; one bingo session and six bottles of water. For cruises from three to five days, the shore excursion credit is $100 per person; and for sailings from 9-14 days, the package includes 12 bottles of water.

As part of the All-Inclusive offer, Norwegian’s Ultimate Dining package provides complimentary access to one of the line’s specialty restaurants every night of the cruise, including Cagney’s, the popular steakhouse; French bistro, Italian restaurant, Moderno Churrascaria, Asian-Fusion restaurant and more. The Ultimate Beverage package includes a variety of spirits, cocktails, draft beer, bottled beer and glasses of wine up to $10 and unlimited fountain soda and juices at all bars, lounges, restaurants and on Norwegian’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay.

I would prefer a smaller package that just combines UDP and UBP...Now THAT I would buy in a second

  16. Still one seat. One bet. One smoker

Sit there for 8 hours if you want just don't expect to have your cruising party standing next to you so they can smoke

And even consider going to the casino just to smoke anymore

Point is that the non smokers are serious about a smoke free environment

Non smokers by nature do not pollute the air others breath

Smokers by the mere fact that they smoke in an area where humans are present will and do pollute the air with a proven carninogen that humans that are next to you must breath in We do not have a choice

    We can walk away

We can decide to not spend money gambling

We can get an ov or an Inside

But the fact remains that smokers are polluting the air. Yes cars and ships do as well but we MUST have those things in daily life for cargo transport etc

We do not need to have smoking in a casino or a balcony

We can survive with a non smoking casino

And be safer without butts flying off a balcony

    It is not a war

All that is needed is a glass enclosed space aft for the smokers

Casino restaurant bar etc. just keep it away from everyone else

I am all for a zero dress code as well as I don't care if you walk the ship in your underware in order to go there for your 8 am coffee

Just keep the smoke away from and smoke all day if you want but you can no longer pollute the air others breath

Perfect example of why it feels like a war between smokers and ANTZ (and not all nonsmokers are ANTZ)
