I also did a 15 day tour of Cuba where we spent more time out of Havana than in Havana and I sort of agree w you. I totally agree w the 2nd part of the post - the people were friendly, there is no garbage or trash in the streets or even in the most basic houses and the country is beautiful.
I do disagree with the 1st part of your post. Yes - the roads were not great and there were no multi lane superhighways but many of the roads and bridges in the US are also disintegrating. Also, there is not a lot of traffic so they do not need multi lane superhighways. Our guide and driver was with us for all the places we visited and I felt that the guide was reasonably open regarding the warts of Cuban society. With regard to beggars, we did not see many of them and have you noticed how many we now have at street corners in the US. We were well feed and chicken, pork, beans and rice is what is eaten in many Caribbean countries. We just completed a tour of Costa Rica where we stayed at places where locals also stayed and these items were the staple items for most of our meals. The stock trucks used as buses are functional in a society where people do not own cars and they get people where they have to get to at a reasonable cost.
I totally agree with your last comments. Cuba is a wonderful place to visit and I would go back in a heartbeat. The problem is that most of the people on CC will end up seeing Havana and maybe one more place while rushing back to their ship for meals and to sleep and thus they will never actually see the real Cuba that people like you and I have seen.

Anytime someone takes a cruise it's pretty clear they will not see every square inch of where they visit. Some people enjoy land vacations, some enjoy a cruise. I can't understand why those that prefer to do land feel the need to make remarks about those that choose to visit on a cruise. Do what makes you happy and others will do what makes them happy. I'd love to eat ashore but if others don't why should anyone care?

My cruise for November is included but the price is well over a $1000 more than when I booked.

Monday's NBC Nightly News: Andrea Mitchell reported from Havana that Starwoods Hotels had reached a business deal with Cuba today and implied that Carnival Cruise Lines was expected to follow.
Likely that a "Whale Tail" vessel will be seen in Havana before one of our well loved "blue beauties".
Good information. Thx :).

Seems to me when I haven't ordered coffee I haven't got them. They used to be good but I don't find them that nice now.
-
Thx for the info. I usually get the same wine all the time. I think I'll branch out a bit. This gives me an idea what's available.

Thanks, cruz chic.
I hope we get to do so soon. I'd love to sail to Havana on the same ship at the same time as you. :)
That would be cool :). Saw a little snippet about Cuba on the news tonight.

All things possible! Possibly they might start off easy then go more. I hope the calls at Havana include at least an evening ashore. Day tours for sure, but the night like might be good fun.
It would be good to have an overnight.

As a Canadian I could go and stay at an all inclusive. I have zero desire to do that. I would like to visit Cuba while on a cruise. I look forward to that happening.

The bow should be open.
I agree. It has on every ship I've been going thru the canal.
Op, are you sure about the date? The cruise leaves on April 10 this year and April 8 (I believe) next year. The dates do not line up for the Amsterdam either.

Thanks for posting a balanced review, glad you enjoyed the Tropical itinerary on NA as we did on the January sailing.
It is refreshing to see someone return with a positive view of the changes rather than assert that every change is somehow a cutback.
Personally I like to hear the good and bad. I hope posters don't become afraid to post both.

Thx for taking time to do your review.

Betty,
I was thinking the Tour Agent gave a politically correct (PC) unimaginative, expected description of how things might go in a perfect world.
The Tour Agent (whatever that is) is wrong.
Yup :).

MY, My PIA! There was NO intent to be rude to Passengers! Would you wait 4 months to be paid a Refund?
I just got a phone call from HAL Accounting and they found the $388 dollars in less than 24 hours,:p and will credit my CC in 3 to 5 Business Days!
Amazing how someone said "If I go public with this issue, it will be resolved very quickly"! Yes it was resolved!
I was TOLD by Guest Specialty Restaurant Reservations that I had to pre-pay for the reservations or take my chances I could get Reservations after we boarded the Zaandam!
"This was a 14 day Alaska trip of a lifetime for my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter"!
Enough said, "NO insult to anyone as a Member on Cruise Critic for 12 years"!

Works every time :D. Glad to hear the money will be refunded.

That is exactly why we never pay for anything early that we do not have to....unless of course there is a financial incentive to do so. Less hastle in the long run.
I agree. I often have up to 5 or 6 dinners at the tamarind. I usually book 2 ahead. I never have a problem booking more once on board no matter what time I book it at and how many people I end up going with.

We sailed on Feb 7, 2016 for 14 days & the Internet was BAD, slow , drops!!
A waste of our $$$$!
Generally I find the Internet to be pretty good on ships but it was dreadful on the eurodam in October 2015. Iirc we were without internet for about 2 days. On my upcoming cruise I think I'll buy the smallest package available so I don't waste money like i did. Hope the Internet is better for the op.

So, our second southern caribbean cruise together. Try not to lose you bags this time!
I'm happy to say I haven't had a repeat of the situation (fingers crossed). I pack a lot differently now so I did learn something from it.
-
Quite right, I was still stuck on those extra days! :)
I would have been none the wiser if I didn't have the cruise booked on the 13th. I got worried for a minute:D.
-
Sure I'm upset! I've been waiting for over 4 months for $388 DOLLARS! Lot's of things I can do with that money! HAL asking for copies of my Credit Card Statements?
I'm not looking to start a mud-slinging contest on Cruise Critic over the operation of a Department!
Reservations said they sent the Cancellation to the Bank of America's Department aka Alaska Airline. Reservations sent it twice, but it never makes it to B of A! Why?
Enough is enough! All I wanted Cruise Critic Members to know was that people make mistakes! FIX it someone at B of A or HAL!
I don't blame you for being mad. I'd be livid. What I don't understand is criticizing another poster for not pre booking. That seemed to be what your post was about. Don't know if you have Facebook but you may want to make a comment on there about your issue. Hal seems much more inclined to clean up their mistakes when it's public.

We're booked for the 10-DAY SOUTHERN CARIBBEAN SEAFARER departing November 9. The price of our cabin has more than doubled since we booked.
We had also booked the 4-day Bahamas cruise immediately before, but decided that with its first arrival in the US causing possible delays a late departure time to begin with, it wouldn't be worth it. I guess others feel the same way, as the cost of our cabin is actually lower today than when we put a hold on it last July.
I'm not surprised that her maiden voyage next month has vacancies. The "thrill" of being on the first cruise doesn't outweigh the potential for disruptions as they iron out the wrinkles.
Just for clarity the 10 day starts on the 13th. The 14 day starts on the 9th.

PIA: When I made my cruise reservation for a cruise for FOUR PAX, Specialty Restaurants REQUIRED a "Paid In Full" for all 4 PAX! I wasn't alseep at the wheel on this reservation. I only did what was being requested, and that's after 27 cruises!
You might be one of the "SPECIAL PEOPLE"! Let's compare Oranges to Oranges!
What? I don't see that poster saying you CAN'T or shouldn't make reservations, she just doesn't care to. I make some online reservations but not all. No matter if you do or don't is it a reason to get so upset ?
-
If that's the case, then they know full well that it's not the norm, and shouldn't go around saying that it is.
Exactly. As someone that does open its busy enough without encouraging people to go to open. When I did traditional if I missed my early time I made other arrangements. I wouldn't dream of going to another seating. That's not fair to those that choose open. Would those in tradition enjoy it if I plunked myself down in your spot on a night that you are using it?

I just wrote about the embarkation day MDR lunch on Nieuw Amsterdam in the Adventures of Flying Fishy review, but, I would never want to torture anyone to having to read that awful crap... so...
Yes, the MDR was open on the 2/28 sailing, and may I recommend the burger and not the fried chicken (if the menu is the same as it was for us).
They served free champagne.
I would highly recommend.
I hope it will be open for my April cruise. There are more and more reports of the MDR being closed for embarkation.

I find it interesting when people get on any cruise ship and are "surprised" by what is or isn't on the ship. Don't people check out these ships before they book? 'There was nothing to do' How could you not know that and then complain?
What? So if someone has something like a/c or plumbing issues they should have known? How do you check that out especially if there are no previous concerns with a ship?
