Possibly the oddest we sailed on was the Cunard Crown Monarch, a small vessel of abour 16000 tonnes that came about when Cunard took over Crown Lines. I think she did only one season here and we had a great cruise up through Cairns to Samarai Is in PNG, probably the last non-expedition cruise ship to visit PNG until P & O recently.

 

Does anyone remember sailing on her or others like Princess Mahsuri, the Minghua, the Big Red Boat or any of the other odd little vessels that have done a season or two out of Australia?

I sailed on a heap of ships ...check my cruise history...2 i really liked were shaw savilles Ocean Monach & Northern Star.The old Canberrs was a grand ship.

It has no appeal for me either...i think the ship would be nice but the so called status that surrounds her would put me off.

I work in a suit each day ,my work place is mostly in Law Courts.....to me a cruise is to get away from that formal type of enviroment...just my view.

The Rhapsody of the Seas name was updated recently on Sydney Ports showing all but 2 sailings between 2 December 2015 - 21 March 2016 as being in port from 0600 to at least 2100.

I am thinking it is a possible Freedom Class Ship from Asia camouflaged as Rhapsody. Check in would take a lot longer for a larger ship at Sydney with the current terminal.

The 3 November 2015 position in Fremantle would be the entry point to Oz from Asia.

The Rhapsody name does has positions booked prior to and after the December 2015 - March 2016. But they have not been deleted yet or Royal has not handed them back yet.

Any thoughts.

Hello fellow cruises, I will be sailing on the Carnival Spirit in September. I have a cabin midship on deck 1 (Riviera deck). Can anyone tell me what the noise level is like on this deck?

we sailed on spirit last may and had an outside cabin on deck 1 midship....it was great no noise at all and it was very stable when the sras were a bit rough.I will be asking for the same when we cruise again in september on spirit.

Here in Vila we have the same powerpoints as in Australia and power is 240 volts.

However, the type of plug that comes with appliances that are bought here will either be Australian or Chinese, depending on the shop you buy from. All items with a Chinese plug come with the plug converter for free.

Hi All,

I have been asked a question that I cannot answer.There is a group of 22 of us sailing on Rhapsody next week....some are reqular cruisers some first timers.I was asked that if you purchase any electrical appliances in Vila what power source they use.....can they be played in Australia using our power supply of 240 volts.

Having never purchased anything electrical in Vila I could not answer the question.

Any advice would be appreciated.

With a trip like this I'd always use the ships tour. And I usually don't book ships tours.

I share the same view ....any big day long tour we always book from the ship.....simply because if anything goes wrong the ship will wait for you but not if you organise your own private tour.its rare that things go wrong but it has happened and will happen again...kinda like a bit of insurance and peace of mind i guess.

In answer to your question re the ships cleanliness, yes the ship is very clean everywhere.

A couple of crew had a cold/no voice type problem but they contained that to themselves and everyone else was in full swing throughout the ship.

 

I should also point out that those who have an Oceanview cabin will enjoy a larger cabin than the Balconies. They offer much more room around the bed etc.

Those who do this itinerary will really enjoy it. I think Princess has picked the best of the best with this one....

I agrre .I like princess cruises especially for their food,service and cleanliness however all 3 ships are identical.I enjoy them and find them really easy to get around but i think princess need at least one modern ship permanently sailing from Australia .....something like diamond or star princess.

Hey I didn,t say I didnt i dont tip ..in fact i tip very well.I resent RCI telling people who choose anytime dinning that gratuities are compulsory but neglect to tell you they are not when you choose traditional dinning.

At 15.00 per day per person some cannot afford that amount.

I had a friend recently give me the advice to not give Royal Caribbean our credit card details, but rather, to pay our onboard accounts with cash. She didn't really say why.

Is there any basis for this advice?

Also, if I do decide to pay with cash, should I pay with US or Aussie dollars?

Hi,

when we sail on Royal Caribbean we take USD onboard as all purchases onboard are in USD and the the ships exchange rate can change daily.

with cash USD it doesnt matter what the daily exchange rate is...you have cash.We usually look up the balance of our onboard account on the TV in the cabin...then go to our in-cabin safe annd go the the pursers desks and pay it off .we give RCI our credit card details but the only amount debited to it is what we spend on the last night of the cruise....saves queueing up to pay cash before getting off the ship.Always "tick" that you want to use your banks exchange rate.RCI have their own exchange rate and its always considerablely lower than the international rate.

I dont know if you know that if you have set time dinning ..that is the same time every night at the same table with the same people you do not have to pay gratuities.if thats your case ...go to the pursers and have them removed.

My friend and i (aged 19 and 18) are going on a 11night carnival cruise to the pacific islands early next year. This is our first cruise ever so we dont know what to expect

I have been reading a lot of reviews from either families or elderly couples..

Is there anyone that can give me opinions and insights of the spirit that are roughly our age..

 

Also, i have a couple of questions about activities and such.

Is it better to book shore excursions through the cruise or when you get to the islands? Also, cant you just roam the island or the beaches of the islands to your discretion ?

Can board games or movies/dvds be rented on the cruise?

How much would it cost to order room service?

Is there times where no one can be allowed on the decks? and are there certain times where the pools and spas open and close?

Also how much does it cost for spa treatments like facials or massages?

 

If you can answer any or all of these questions that'd be GREAT! and just an overall comment on your experience.

We sailed on spirit in April.we loved it and im in my sixties...the ship is great,entertainment was all good.At the islands there is no real organised tours best to snorkel and swim but tours like the zegos tours in Vila are best booked from the ship.there will be heaps of young kids onboard espcially if its in holiday periods...we had over 500 on our cruise but thet didnt bother us they were just having fun.

go on the green thunder its great i loved it.

try to get on the early boarding time in sydney ..i think 1st boarding time is 12.30-1.00 pm....get onboard and have fun.

We have cruised on Carnival and had an awesome time. DID NOT see anything that the OP said, from the moment we stepped on board and was greeted by friendly staff who offered assistance in directions etc....you will have a great time, sometimes I read some reviews and think... Wow, was that the same ship, you may read 1 bad review fom 1 person, but what about the other 2000 people on board ? They are probably too busy to think of bad things to winge about as they are booking their next cruise as they had such a great time. Unfortunately in this world there will always be unhappy people. . :) rant over. Fiona.

We recently travelled on Carnival Spirit for an 11 night south pacific cruise. After re-reading this review, I feel more inclined to book a cruise on Spirit (just to see for myself). We enjoyed VOS very much but we are always looking for new experiences, and Carnival are the only other "new" ones operating out of Oz. I simply cannot believe that a cruise on ANY cruiseship could be as bad as has been described. I certainly don't deny that the poster had a terrible time -- however I don't believe that we ( wife and I) would. :)

 

MY attitude is to ignore very poor reviews and to even sceptically consider the positive ones. I will take seriously reviews that come from people that I know and respect (especially if thay have had comprehensive experiences) - so I did sit up when I read what Shiona had to say about Spirit. However, the more experience we have of anything in this life "can" also mean the more critical we become. Life is like a one way ratchet -- once you have experienced the very best, it is difficult to forget it -- but we can't always have the very best.

We did just that...i was sick of all the negatives so we tried carnival in may and loved it.Sure its not your grand cruise like silverseas etc but its not what you call expensive.go with an open mind like we did....we loved it and would certainly go again anytime.

Leanne, I think it is called the Norwegian Spirit now. It is 76800gt, approx 2000 passengers with capability of 2800 passengers, 879ft long, 14 decks....and the layout/fittings etc are stunning. I can send you a copy of our dvd if you want, just email me. The dining was via choice of numerous restaurants ie chinese, japanese, steakhouse, french, normal formal, buffet etc. Best shows I have seen yet on the seas. The list goes on.....

Hallo I recently found this brown pouch.. does anyone know what it was used for? It appears to be made of leather and obviously held something, maybe pens?

 

It came with a possibly silk scarf which has "Orient Line Oriental Cruise by 'Orcades' (28 000 tons) Sept-Oct 1957".

How good .the Orcades was the 1st cruise i sailed on ...way back in 1970 when P&O had it.

I notice from your cruise history that this time last year we were both on Rhapsody.....we are sailing again on her 1.12.09
