  1. anyone been here recently? hubby and i are thinking about doing this excursion but havent really seen any recent reviews...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Friends of ours went on it last month when we were in Ocho Rios. They really enjoyed it, but were disappointed that it took so long that they had to go from the bus directly to the ship when they returned.

  2. We were there last month. Walked by Local Village & the Crew Bar and they just didn't look that inviting (I like that beach bar feel) We ended up at Jack's and stayed there there for a few hours before we had to head back to the ship. We had a lot of fun sitting at the bar talking to Jack & Janet and other cruisers. The jerk chicken is awesome! I even bought a bottle of Leroy's Jerk Sauce!

  3. A DUI is considered felony conviction in Canada so yes a person with a conviction within 10 years of arrival in Canada is not admissible. That said the Canadian customs officers have a great deal of discretion as to who they admit and who they don't. If refused admission a person can request a one time temporary admission permit at the border and the fee is $200.

However, in the case of the OP her husband's conviction occurred more than 10 years ago and there should not be an issue. I would advise bringing along any documentation with regard to the matters and be prepared to show them if asked. You do not need to volunteer any information and I doubt very much that is will even come up.

This is right on. My husband traveled there for work 5 or 6 times and had no problem getting in. THEN the last time, the border agent actually checked his record and found he had a DUI 9 years ago & he was denied entry.

  4. Ok so jacks shack for jerked chicken, local bar for drinks, m-ville for ambiance ... That about the consensus? I'm really excited for this trip we have only been to Nassau and Freeport before. Now we will see Grand Turk, and Half Moon Cay.

You forgot about the Crew Bar & Big Daddy's at White Sands Resort between M'Ville & Local Bar! We plan to bar hop to all of them next month!

  5. Well, if LV isn't your ideal, Jack's is only a 2 minute stroll up the beach. You can take a look and then decide. but LV gets my vote:cool:

It sounds like Jack's might need to have an "attitude (& food/cost) adjustment" or they will be losing a lot of cruise business to their competition, Local Village! :D

  6. Hey Guys!

    Hope you're doing well!!!!

I chose this band ...not the ship! Yeah, they're good, real good!

Check out this classic "Freebird clip"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJwFYu-Hnks

    Check out guitar solo...ROCK'N!!

    Mike

Hi, Mike! Never did get to meet you on the Dream last Sept.! What was the name of that band from Austrailia (?) who played? Are they no longer on contract with Carnival? Did you two like them, I wasn't too crazy about them myself!

Looking forward to seeing Music Motion! We'll be back on the Freedom in January doing the itinerary you're doing in August - hopefully, we'll have a good band then, too!

  7. Yes the Sandbar had good food and service despite the fact that only one person was tending tables (other one was in the kitchen). There's parking next to the bar and a beach there but it's bring your own towels. Very enjoyable. We were there a little over an hour but that's because we met others from the Roll Call there and spent time with them plus the place got busy and we had to wait a bit for the check.

If you've signed up for the free shot (in a plastic shot glass) at Jacks, do go there and have a drink. But otherwise, follow mrsfuzzmo's suggestion and just go directly to Local Village (I can post pics once I've uploaded them). Can't miss their large sign. Enjoy your cruise.

Thanks, Crewsweeper!! I think we will follow your (& Mrsfuzzmo's) suggestions!

  8. Thank you Crewsweeper! So did you enjoy the Sandbar? Good lunch? Great view? Can you hang out on their beach? How long did you stay there (if your ship departed at 3) - I noticed they do not open until noon.

So why were you not too impressed with Jack's? We'll probably just stop by there for a drink to see what all the hype is about, then leave.

  9. Thank you :) Yes, they latch onto a bar/beach/venue or a tour operator..but...JMO sometimes "success" goes to the heads/or business sense of these small island operators

That is why you see people writing bad reviews for Godfrey or Lawrence of ANTIQUA or "Sonny" when they get overloaded and farm out their clients to their brother in law or some friend with a broken down van

Do the math....Jack's shack is pretty pricey for what you get...$5 for a chair and $10 for an umbrella?

I do think the dog is cute tho...maybe have a drink but I would not rent a chair there

I was at Village Local and they were very nice...really local too...

Conch fritters were very good and really cheap

Bought some diet sodas for $1 each and carried back onto the ship

Totally agree! I'm glad someone shares my observations! :) We will do exactly what you suggested - stop in for a drink at Jack's & check out the dog, Topher. Then we will head to "the Village!"

  10. I agree...the reviews seem good...I just wish we would hear from someone who has been there recently.....I'm surprised there's not more response...when you pull up to the dock at Grand Turk you can't miss the place...lots of flags...festive music...and big colorful signs advertising cheap beer, soda and water! Last year we had booked excusions and didn't have time to check it out!!

The most recent review on Tripadvisor is only 2 weeks old. I find that a lot of people on this web-site seem to promote just certain places (here, for example, Jack's Shack) and tour operators (you definitely notice that on ALL the Ports of Call threads.) Some of us like to "branch out," though! ;)

  11. Pusser's Red, Blue, John Paul Jones, and Admiral Nelson are all available at AH Rise.

Just an aside, the original Soggy $ Bar Painkiller (which was invented in 1971 by George and Mari Myrick, previous owners of the Soggy Dollar) was made with Cruzan rum until Pusser's became the official, legal rum of the Painkiller.

Thank you for that great news!!! I may have to try a Painkiller with dark Cruzan since there have been so many mentions of it! :)

  12. We bought our first bottle of Pussers years ago in Freeport. Since then , we have only found it in Tortola at the Pussers rum store there. We bought a few bottles there a few years ago. We have looked for it at other ports but have had no luck. If anyone knows where it may be available at in St Thomas, St Martin or Nassau, please let me know.

    Thanks

    Tina

I was afraid of that. :( We bought our Pussers in Tortola a couple years ago - didn't like it until I discovered Painkillers! :D I don't know if they will taste the same without the Pussers!

I will stop by AH Riise to buy a couple more bottles of the Chocolate Rum Licquor (yes, Ashland, it's delish - discovered it last year!)

  13. Good question,

    The answer is Yes.

    Here was our schedule:

    Arrive Depart

    Fort Lauderdale - +/- 5:30 ET

St. Thomas 7:00 AT 6:00 AT

    Antigua 7:00 AT 6:00 AT

    Tortola 7:00 AT 3:30 AT

    Nassau 12:00 ET 7:00 ET

    Fort Lauderdale +/- 6:00 ET -

All times were local and ship time. Same as original schedule published by Carnival.

This is new - we were on the same ship/itinerary in Sept. '09 and stayed on Eastern Time the entire cruise. I have never been on a cruise that HASN'T stayed on Eastern Time!

I just checked the time difference on a web-site and it says that Atlantic Time is 4 HOURS earlier than Eastern! This just sounds strange to me!!

  14. Just a few more questions, if I may.......

    1. Approx. how long of a taxi ride to get to Maho beach?

    2. Approx. how much does taxi cost to Maho beach (6p)?

    3. Approx. what time in the afternoon would you want to be 'on your way back' if your ship is leaving at 5pm?

    Thanks alot!

It's hard to predict how long it takes to and from Maho. We went from Orient Beach there and it took us about 45 minutes via the French side. When we left, there was a traffic jam (the one people talk about on here) so our driver said he could take us back via the French side. That took a little over an hour. I would allow at least 2 hours to get back to port.

Here's the link for the taxi rates:
