  1. We ask our butler to exchange the free wine we receive in our suite for either bottled water or diet soda and they always do. Likewise for our Platinum dinners for 2 at Le Bistro, we ask for San Pellegrino instead of the wine and they always do that. I would NEVER EVER ask anyone on a ship to sneak something...good grief. If you can't afford the water by the rules, then don't cruise, or drink from the tap or the buffet water dispenser. Good grief!

  2. We have had 8 cruises on NCL and loved all of them. Two were on the Sun...one a transatlantic...and it and the Jade are our favorite ships. Staff is fantastic and the ship's size is perfect. My daughter and I were in an aft mini-suite on the transatlantic and it was very large with a huge balcony. We also will be on her in May 2017 for the 14 day Alaska cruise from San Francisco. Don't let the naysayers get you down, you will have a great time!

  3. We've been in Europe yearly for a long time. I flew in the US just a few days after 9/11. We know what the odds are here and abroad. Problem we have traveling in Europe right now are the rapid changes western Europe...and Turkey....are undergoing and will be undergoing for awhile. Our decision is to wait till it all settles down a bit so that we can go and just relax. That does not make the terrorists "win" and I really dislike that phrase and the way it is used to make people feel guilty if they are not comfortable traveling. British Isles, Norway, some Baltic countries....if we go in the next few years, those will be our choices. While we respect everyone's comfort level and choices, don't disrespect ours. By the way, we would not be comfortable visiting Chicago these days either and not because of terrorism!

  4. This is one of the very best cruise reviews I have ever read, you are really to be commended for it. There is so much negativity around here that it is great to see a wonderful couple having a great time. We are on the Sun 14 day San Francisco to Vancouver in May 2017 and your review made us look forward to it even more. It will be our third time on the Sun and it is a great ship iMHO!

  5. Time to give this whole thread a rest....the policy has changed, you are outraged, yada yada yada. Pay for the water if you want bottled water, yes the ships have 100% juice onboard but not in cans, yes the ship water is perfectly pure, enough already of this level of outrage. Things change, prices change, everywhere all the time. That is the way it goes.

  6. We sailed the Dawn from Boston to Tampa several years ago. We had a fantastic time and look forward to our repo from Boston to New Orleans in Oct. We are a couple who can't figure out how you can have a bad time on a cruise. On any new or refurbished hotel, ship, whatever, there is a break in period, to be expected. Suggest everyone concentrate on just having a good time and rolling with the punches. Glass is more than half full every day you are on the seas!

  7. Bottom line is that you control what you pay for the cruise. We prefer things done the way they are on NCL and of course other lines are doing very very similar. We don't drink, don't gamble, do most of our own excursions....we don't have to end up paying for things we don't want anyway. BTW, this upcoming 14 day on the Dawn is our 9th NCL cruise and we have had a wonderful time each and every time. We have never ever been surprised by an unexpected charge, not once. Their suite perks and their Platinum tier benefits are the best in the industry, btw.

  8. Sounds like you took an excursion, perhaps? We were in Santorini a couple of years ago on the Jade and it was crowded then too...it is one of the world's most beautiful places. We took the tram up and down....long line each way but it moved quickly both times. We walked to the bus station and for a few Euro we rode the bus to Oia and back to Fira. Oia was very crowded but so is much of Europe and we just walked with the flow.

  9. Anyone comparing what is going on in Turkey right now with Boston, LA, or NYC, really needs to learn about what is going on right now in a world hot spot.

We have a 2017 Azamara cruise that begins in Istanbul. The way I look at it is that if the situation doesn't change, Azamara will change the itinerary. We have already been to Istanbul, so it's not a make or break port for us. Our cruise really focuses on the Greek Islands and the Amalfi Coast in Italy. We'll see what happens.

Turkey is a caldron right now unfortunately.

  10. Very sad times for Turkey which is one of our favorite places. If you can find it on YouTube or elsewhere, watch the Anthony Bourdain episode set in Istanbul. He captured perfectly the mood of the Turkish people and the very sad things that are happening to Istanbul. While we were not afraid to go, we didn't use public transportation, had our own Ekol guide and driver, and felt that things could change at anytime and this COULD be our last time there. They are not Arabs in any way shape or form, so that was a very uninformed comparison IMHO. Istanbul is a vibrant cosmopolitan place with a lot of very bright people who are distraught about what is happening to their country and their beautiful city. Our hearts go out to the Turkish people.

  11. We were in Istanbul on the Spirit in late October and were well aware then that things could change and the port canceled. We made up our minds that we were going regardless and enjoy whatever port was substituted. We always have cancel for any reason travel insurance and recommend that to everyone these days. Dubrovnik is a beautiful city and if you end up there you will love it.

If we were going now, I wouldn't get off the ship in Istanbul even if it docked there. Turkey is just at the juncture of a lot of problem areas. I am very glad we have been there twice and hope that things change at some point, but don't think that will happen anytime soon.
