  1. I do have the Fun Times and will post.

You have to select your level outside of the elevator then it assigns you to an elevator. It theoretically should bring you right there, but it still seemed to stop on nearly every deck.

I used the Hub app frequently. They had an option to make a reservation at the specialty restaurants, however, the one time I looked early in the week, there was no availability. I'm not sure if that was legit or a bug. The YTD reservation system wasn't yet available on the Hub.

  2. Yes, formal nights were the second and 7th nights.

The elevator programming is good in theory, but the execution isn't there. I'm not sure what the issue is, it seems like they assign everyone going in the same direction to the same elevator (and the other 3-5 never get assigned, even if 10 people walk up and selected the same destination), and when it finally comes, it stops on every floor and nobody gets on or off. I guess people give up on waiting?

  3. We just got home from the first 8 night Horizon trip out of NYC. Overall, we had a good time because we just wanted a low-key, relaxing time. The entertainment and camp staff were truly phenomenal. I can't get over how great they all were with my son. However, the ship is definitely still working out some kinks, and I also think the people and schedules, for lack of a better word, on this sailing were much different from what the staff had grown accustomed in Europe.

Seemed to be some definite training issues. We had issues with our room steward (flat out lied to us), the drink service in the comedy club was awful, and some of the food service staff on Lido (especially deli) were just nasty. On the other hand, we met tons of lovely and kind crew members who went the extra mile.

I think our perception of the cruise overall was a lot better than a lot of the other guests. We heard people complaining everywhere we went about the food (it was as expected, or better, to us), the elevators (they are really terrible and need to be reprogrammed), and the service (definitely mixed bag here).

I do have to say that the overall guest makeup was very different from our last cruise in September to CA/NE. Seemed like a lot of first timers who perhaps don't know cruise etiquette (or maybe just general manners). So maybe that was taking a toll on the staff as well, as some folks were incredibly rude to the crew. I also heard there was a fight where someone threw a chair at the pizza place and he/they were banned from CCL for life? All that said, we did meet some fantastic people too who were pleasant and did in fact know how to wait their turn (or, you know, not leave their dishes in the middle of the stairway).

I'm going to try to post a quick review later this week. In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions I can answer. I'll leave you with a few pics of some of the staff that made our trip great. 672c10c3aa765e14f3ab07e094d31a28.jpg4c9c96c76c62ec1984aa64c5e4b90625.jpg5b0914a4163e4eccc28bc00e68ddeb01.jpgd0db27e7350be99cad1caf0678916a6e.jpg

  4. We've never had to sign out 3 kids up for kid's dinner, we take them most every night, they love it so much more than sitting int he MDR with us. The only thing I've had to sign up for was the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast
    same

  5. in September on the Sunshine we were directed to the limelight lounge for the special needs muster. I don't know if they change it based on space needed, if there are multiple locations based on where your actual muster station is, etc.

Also, they did let us out a bit early, but not early enough to miss the regular muster people by the time we made our way to the elevator bank.

I'd recommend sending an email before her cruise to advise carnival that the special needs muster is needed (along with any other possible accommodations that may be needed).

  6. I think he accidentally posted the movies for March (he was talking about them on the video this AM b/c someone had mentioned there weren't enough family friendly movies, or they showed non-family friendly movies too early or something). This should be the right list:

    Wrinkle in Time

    Jumanji

    Star Wars: The Last Jedi

    Black Panther

    Daddy's Home 2

    Pitch Perfect 3

    Wonder

    The Greatest Showman

    Justice League

    Coco

    Peter Rabbit

    15:17 to Paris

    Thor: Ragnarok

    Red Sparrow (midnight movie)

  7. They allow cans and “cartons”, I assumed juice boxes would be considered cartons. Does anyone know?

Also are there water fountains where I can refill their sippy cups?

Yes, juice boxes are fine to bring on.

There are water dispensers on Lido, or buy a 12 pack to be delivered to your room for $4.50, I believe.

  8. I've had good luck so far with the flat irons. The calamari is 'generic'.

We did not care for the prime rib, and my second least favorite entree behind that was the honey glazed pork loin- too many competing flavors.

  9. First, loving your review, you're a beautiful family.

Secondly, Aussies definitely do coffee right, love a proper flat white.

Lastly, I don't believe that you didn't Photoshop your family into those HMC photos [emoji12], they're stunning! And no background people!

Looking forward to reading your thoughts about Grand Turk, as we will be there in a couple of weeks.

    Happy Mother's Day!

  10. I just got off the Horizon on Sunday. I used to write thorough reviews of every cruise, but Photobucket has my account held hostage right now due to the bandwidth my reviews were generating. And I’m too cheap to pay the 500 or so bucks they want to charge me to make my photos viewable again, so I gave up. But I can sum up my experience and answer any questions that you have.

Firstly, I loved the ship. It’s my favorite one so far. It never felt crowded anywhere, except for the Main Theater. We went to one show any actually had to sit in the upper seats (never had to do that before). I see what people mean about the Liquid Lounge being horrible on the Vista. It really is. First of all, it is so much smaller than the theaters on other ships. The moveable chairs on the bottom floor are not practical, and there are so many seats in the theater that have no view at all due to the huge floor to ceiling posts. Such a horrible design. Because of this, we never bothered to go to any other shows except for that one. Which is a shame, because I love Carnival’s shows.

The food on the ship was excellent, as was the service. We had YTD, and never had to wait for a table for four. We ate lunch one day at Bonsai Teppanyaki and it was the best teppanyaki that I have ever had. For dinner, we did Jiji’s Asian Kitchen one night, as well as the Steakhouse on the last night. Jiji’s was phenomenal. I wish they had this restaurant in my hometown. I would eat there a lot. The Steakhouse was good, except for what I would consider another design flaw: it is right next to the Piano Bar, and there was no separation between the two venues. They seated us at a table that was right next to the Piano Bar. It was so loud that we could not hear ourselves talk during dinner. I appreciate that some people love the Piano Bar, and I have no complaints about the music he was playing, but I paid to have dinner in the Steakhouse, not in a bar. I didn’t appreciate this at all, and will be providing my feedback to Carnival.

We were in a Havana Cabana that we were upsold to for a small amount (originally booked in an interior). Given that we only had one sea day and were sailing with friends not in a Havana room, we didn’t get to use the Havana pool area at all. But, it was nice to experience the room. I can say that I probably would not book a Cabana room on the Horizon for future cruises. The appeal of these rooms is that you can easily walk to your patio from the pool area. However, you cannot lock the patio door from the patio. So if you want to go to the pool and leave you room locked, you have to leave the room from the regular door, walk down the hallway, then through the Havana Bar. This doesn’t seem at all convenient. My understanding is that the Vista Cabanas are different, and that you can lock the patio doors behind you. I’m not sure why they changed this for the Horizon.

I thought I would miss having an atrium that goes all the way up, but I really didn’t. The funnel with changing patterns (whatever you call it), is really fun. Though truth be told, I still prefer the larger atriums with the glass elevators, if I had to choose. But, it’s not a dealbreaker. I also prefer the old Farcus decorated ships much more than the modern look that the new ships have. I like the Vegas glitz and glam feel of the old ships.

We choose morning and evening service. Our room steward (or stewardess?) Laura was exceptional. She filled up the ice in our room both in the morning and in then evening. Without being asked. She was great.

I did a cabin crawl and it seems that all of the room types seem to have shrunk a bit. But from what I have heard, they are still bigger than the rooms on other cruise lines. What Carnival has done with adding the Family Harbor and Havana cabins is great, though. Smart move on their part.

The gift shop on this ship was incredibly tiny. You really can’t fit more than a couple people in it at a time. They did have another Horizon Inaugural store that was a bit bigger, though. I’m not sure if this will become the regular gift shop once the inaugural season is over, however. Hopefully it will. I was disappointed that they no longer sell the ceramic ship magnets that I collect. They have switched over to plastic ones.

There is a Victoria’s Secret now on this ship. But like the other stores onboard, not something I would spend my money on. I don’t sail to go shopping for things I can buy at home. The Cherry on Top has a ice cream shop, which I think is also new for this ship.

I’m typing this out on my phone, so I realize this isn’t the best written review. I’m still pretty jet lagged, too, from the long flight home yesterday. I’m sure that I am forgetting something, but for now, that’s all I can think of. It was a fantastic cruise. Loved every bit of it and I hope I get to sail on this ship again.

Thanks for the feedback, sounds like you had a good time. I have 2 questions. You said you had lunch at the teppanyaki restaurant; did they offer lunch several times, or just on sea days? With regard to the piano bar music, were you at the steakhouse when they were playing the background/lounge/instrumental type music, or were you there when they started the singalong entertainment?

  11. At the moment, the reflections dining room which is mid ship is the traditional seating dining room. It's only a one floor dining room, so the balcony wouldn't come into play. I'm not really sure, if they have seats by the window either, though I imagine they would have a few, but not as many as the AFT dining room. That said, they may change which dining rooms are used for which seatings based on the sailings and what's been requested.

  12. I thought the OP was asking about availability of upcoming NHL playoff games on Carnival ships?? What does that have to do with the Masters?
The person I quoted seemed quite insistent that the Masters wouldn't be shown on ESPN.

Based on a similar search to see if the NHL playoffs would be carried by ESPN International, I'm coming up empty.

  13. This is just not true. The network stations were definitely on in the Conquest sports bar. They had at least 3 different network venues playing at the same time. The Masters is exclusively on CBS and they have no connection to ESPN.

"In addition, ESPN International will air the Masters in 53 countries on television, mobile, online and broadband platforms."
