  1. Lois, thanks so much for posting this thread. She is my favorite ship, so sad to hear she is leaving X. It has been over 3 years since we were on the Century, but please indulge my comments. My late husband and I renewed our wedding vows for our 25th anniversary on this classy ship. Maybe it was the occasion. but to us everything was perfect about her! This cruise was just a few months before he got sick and it is one of my most precious memories.

  2. Wow, Indiana71, you are my hero! I pack more than that for a long weekend at our beach house. And I already have some stuff there like bathing suits, cover-ups, casual wear and flip flops. I must take lessons from you.

So excited, we didn't have anything booked but have decided to take our kids on a short Carnival cruise right before school starts. Hoping to find one out of Charleston since it's only a 4 hour drive. Also gonna finally do the panama canal cruise we've always wanted to. Looking at Holland America 11 day out of Ft Lauderdale. Got to book soon incase DH changes his mind, lol.

We have cruised primarily with Celebrity and HAL. How different is Carnival as far as dressing for dinner? I rarely wear anything but dresses for dinner.

  3. Packing and unpacking, to me is a little personal. Not sure I could bring myself to accept that particular service.

I think we need to use a little common sense when deciding what to ask of the butler. On the first leg of our btb cruise our neighbors had kids (nothing against them, we have 4) and were extremely high maintenance. For example, they called Dan at least twice every time he was in our cabin. Overheard enough to know that they were pretty unreasonable. They requested that he put the pack & play up and down twice in the morning, twice in the afternoon and of course at night because they had kids that napped at different times. They also had a standing order for snacks 4 times a day.

We probably asked less of him the first cruise because we knew he was sretched too thin. He seemed concerned that we were not asking anything of him.

  4. Hi our turn,

We are sailing on Century to Hawaii on 10/02/11. W are in a Sky Suites 1204 and 1206. We hope to get "Dan the Man" and his team based on your experience. What stateroom number where you in and when did you sail. Hope he is still under contract with Celebrity when we sail...maybe we can request his services once on board!!

    Hi Bob,

We were in cabin# 1234 which was a great location - just one flight of stairs directly to the Islands Cafe and the aft bar which was our favorite hangout. Very quiet and balcony seemed private since there are no cabins above you.

Dan truly is a special man, such a gentleman and very good at his job. Hate to see the Century leave Miami. We loved the size and throughout the ship the best service we have ever had. I think it was our best cruise yet.

  5. The butler service on Celebrity is truly makes our cruise. Just back from a btb on the Century and were fortunate to have "Dan the Man" as our butler. He was great never intrusive but always available.

He introduced himself and gave us his cell phone number within minutes of our arriving in our suite. He explained what kinds of things he could do for us and invited us to call him for anything else we could think of. He immediately took care of switching out the champagne for wine when I mentioned I didn't really care for champagne. On turn around day he automatically took care of it while we met with the other btb guests to be escorted through customs.

We also enjoyed appetizers and drinks many evenings since our dinner wasn't until 8:30. We took advantage of insuite dining a couple of nights and it was fantastic. He set it up on our balcony with tablecloth and flowers. The first evening we had dinner on our balcony, I had gone up to the aft bar for a glass of wine (beverage package can't be used with room service) when he delivered the first course. With the second course, he brought me a bottle of wine! He just winked and said no need to interrupt your dinner to go get wine.

We loved talking with him and found out that he had retired to his homeland to become a chef. When economic problems caused his employer to cut his salary 40% he came back to Celebrity. With his experience as a chef, we found his menu reccomendations valuable. Often, he brought a second entree that he thought was especially good and he was right!

There were lot's of little things that he did that made our trip special. He brought wonderful padded cushions and extra beach towels for our loungers, took clothing for pressing, delivered dinner by course and many wonderful breakfasts. He was always pleasant, seemed to be nearby to open the door to our cabin and just a great guy to talk to. He and Helen and her assistant Mario, our room stewards were by far the best team we have ever had the pleasure of sailing with.

  6. Hi ladies, I'm back from a glorious two week vacation (Miami and 9 days on the Celebrity Century). Best cruise ever, loved the ship, the food, the spa and all the ports.

This great thread helped me plan my outfits and accessories so that for the first time I brought home almost nothing unworn. Still think I could eliminate a couple pair or shoes but overall everything worked perfectly.

Just an observation on what I saw ladies wearing. Our 9 days on the Century was actually a 5 and a 4 day back to back. Interestingly, there was a marked difference between the two cruises. On the 5 night I saw several gowns and tuxes on formal night but hardly any on the 4 night. I wore a long, saphire blue gown with rhinestone straps the first cruise and a short gold cocktail dress for the second.

On casual nights, it was pretty much anything goes. I like dresses for dinner and that was probably the majority, but there were also some great pants, capris and skirts. I did see several younger girls in great dressy shorts with heels. We dined in the specialty restaurant Muranos on 3 nights and did see jckets offered to men who came in without them. Also saw one couple turned away. The man had on shorts and a polo shirt and the woman had on a mini skirt and halter top.

We took tons of pictures and I will post as soon as we get them sorted. I am in the process of planning a family cruise for late June. We have cruised on Holland America and Celebrity but this time we are taking our 10 year old son, 21 year old son and his wife and 18 month old baby girl. Any suggestions for which cruiseline might be the best fit for us? And obviously I will need lots of advice for dressing for a different cruiseline, lol.

    Kim
