  1. Well, yes, we don't mind tipping the bar staff from time to time, but we don't see that as our duty in order to receive things "above and beyond." We have a budget, and the cruise is in most part paid upfront. Extras are allowed for, tipping included, but why should it be necessary if you already paid the gratuities. It seems that the poster who suggests handing extra often to the bartenders, suggests that is the way to win over and above the limitations placed through the UBP. Or is this a misunderstanding?

"You dont see that as your duty to recieve things"??? you have got to be kidding me??? Its a cruiseship! Not all of us can always do cruises...THIS is why bartenders and waitstaff on ships are ignorant and pissed off!! You cant be for real. So you got the UBP as a perk and now they owe you something?? OMG no wonder people are complaining on here:rolleyes:

  2. No excuse for Ncl to leave when they are literally 10 feet away from dock when the parents arrive. Hell they could hop a jet ski to traverse the 10 feet it takes to get onboard. I know Ncl waited 45 minutes already and if they pulled clear of the harbor and still no parents then so be it .....but they're on the friggin dock!

Not sure if your new to cruising or what but the bottom line is GET ON THE SHIP AT THE TIME THEY TELL YOU.....there are 4000 others on the ship, they need to be back in NY in a timely fashion. Why the HELL would they wait for 1 person.......quick answer. They dont! Bottom line. I dont feel bad for NCL at all, Rules are rules.

  3. The package covers drinks up to $15.00. any drinks over $15.00 you pay the difference.

You pay gratuities on the package, not on each individual drink, and this is paid with your cruise fare prior to sailing.

Okay, I will share this will CC one more time on this subject. The UBP is what it is but if you take care of the bartenders, tip them, visit them often, you can get just about whatever you want. We had the UBP on our last sailing on the Gem and by day 3, my wife entered the cabin with a bucket of beer for me and about a half solo cup of jaeger for me to enjoy cause our bartender heard I was relaxing on our balcony and wouldnt be out till later......NOW that is service!!!! All you have to do is take care of the workers.....thats it!;)

  4. We have been on the Gem and really enjoyed it. I think the BA has more for the kids. Maybe we just need to try a less busy time of year.

My sister was on the Getaway with her husband and 2 daughters for the

spring break cruise and had the same thing to say about some of the crew. I think cruise crew hate Spring Break week cause she said much of the same things...ship was great but some of the crew was annoyed. My wife and I are on the Breakaway in 3 weeks in the Haven so I will report back if anything is the same or different.....;)

  5. I've never sailed in the Haven, but I would say if you want to splurge a -little- extra, move up to an oceanview or balcony. In my opinion that would be worth a couple hundred dollars instead of a couple thousand. There are definitely perks of the Haven, but -most- of the ship is the same no matter what cabin you're in. Personally if this may be your one shot at a vacation with your mom and your sister, I would opt for a room with at least a window. The Haven has perks but unless you REALLY upgrade, the cabins aren't really THAT much bigger than a balcony. Just my opinion though.

That is very untrue......We have an H6 aft penthouse on the breakaway and the cabin and balcony are MUCH larger than a regular balcony...."just your opinion though"

  6. I just wanted to put my 2 cents in to this....I have SDP for our upcoming cruise on breakaway....booked Cagneys, La Cucina, and Teppynaki....went to book Ocean Blue for our 4th night and it was trying to bill me for 15 per person....other dining venues are free for us but couldnt include Ocean Blue. We got our SDP with the Haven purchase:)

  7. Leaving in 2 weeks...yikes!!

Just had a couple of questions...

    1. At GSC, do you get priority tendering if you've already booked a Cabana?? I'm going to be really annoyed if I've spent almost $500 CDN on a cabana and can't get to it til the 3rd or 4th tender!

    2. Is there anything to do near the ship terminal at Port Canaveral?? I wasn't going to bother getting off the ship that day but now have a friend who is in Florida for 2 weeks wanting to come and meet us that day for a visit so her little girl can see what the ship looks like. I don't really want to be off the boat for too long or travel too far from it as we'd been looking forward to a day with less people on board.

    3. We've chosen the 9:30 check in time at the pier...does this actually MEAN anything?? Will it ensure that we have a lower boarding number or is it really just the luck of the draw?? It seems silly to have exact check in times to choose from if that doesn't really help us...I'm REALLY hoping for Vibe passes!

    4. Has anyone on here done Atlantis? We booked the one through NCL...is transportation included in that?

    Thanks everyone!!

Get out the way on the private island and in Port Canaveral everyone!!!!! Supergirl takes the cake in priorities and needs to be off when she wants to be...dont care bout anyone else!!

  8. Please explain the big difference.

My son has served 2 tours in Afganistan and is deployed in Africa now. Bigger man than you and me I would say. I would give anyone in the military a beerand buy it for them....Do I really need to explain military people versus college peeps?

  9. Agree 100%

Adult at 18, can go to war and be maimed or killed at 18, can vote at 18 but nanny state says no brews until 21.

All that does is dangle the "forbidden fruit" in front of them. Idiotic.

My son was able to drink when he was 20 cause he was defending our country...I agree with that. Not working the pizza shop in a small town while in college.....BIG difference. and please dont argue that, cause you will lose

  10. How bout you answer the question and keep your opinions to yourself ? BTW we didn't all have to wait until we were 21. When I was 18 it was legal to drink.

Well then you must be old as dirt. The legal age of the US is 21 so I dont know what era your from but I will say this.....Its CRUISE CRITIC and its where PEOPLE PLACE OPINIONS!!!!!!! Get a grip:rolleyes:

  11. Ive read and seeing videos of cruise trips that have "kids" who get stupid

because they are drinking and get into fights, stubbling around like idiots....etc. Is this what cruising has become? Letting kids drink? Why? They cant drink back home....Id really like a good reason for this issue to even come up

  12. Okay, so here is the point I was trying to initially get at. The Jewel class ships don't have the same amenities as the Away class ships have as far as the "Haven". They are very beautiful suites but not what you find on the Away ships now days. They don't have the bells and wistles that you see on the new ships, SO...proving my point that they just tried to TRANSFORM the "Courtyards" into the "Haven".....New cruisers and new NCL cruisers are getting very confused about this and I have read a lot of posts of people asking about it because they think the Gem Haven is just like the Escape, or the Getaway.....which is very untrue.....:D

  13. I remember that disaster! It was on a Jade European sailing and there were a lot of very unhappy Haven cruisers! I believe that those who complained did receive some compensation.

Just looked at a very old book of deck plans for the Jewel. As stated above, the area was called "The Courtyard" when the ship was originally built.

Thank you for backing me up. I knew it wasn't called "The Haven" back then ;)

  14. Sorry, but this is incorrect. The Jewel class ships always had the Haven area from the time they were built. It was just that only certain level suites had Haven access unlike the "away" ships where all suites have Haven access.

Well then it wasnt called "Haven"....The Gem and Pearl came out back in 2007. I dont ever remember them being called "Haven". Just suites:confused:
