  1. You cannot use a USB drive on any HAL computer to prevent introducing viruses into the ship's system.

If you want to print on any of the ship's computers, you have to print from an internet location/email.

I would suggest bringing a laptop and storing your files in the Cloud.

Do you need internet to access the cloud? In which case bringing USB and Laptop might be better as it would not include any costs

  2. snip..Re port times, they are always going to be a little vague but if you want to know the most likely times then check the port authority for the specific port as they will tend to list the expected arrival and departure times, but take care to note that these are not set in stone and will vary on the day which is why Fred will never print exact times.

FO are not even listed for some of the ports and those where they are the Port Authority has am or pm...so no help. Other cruise lines can give times so why can't FO??

As for flights times I can't believe that the airlines even if they are charter do not know what their flight times are, as they must arrange these with the airport quite a while in advance.

We are experienced cruisers and expect more information than we are being given.

  3. This year we did a repositioning cruise from Rio, up the coast of Brazil then across the Atlantic to Spain then on to Italy. The only bad heavy seas we encountered were at Malaga where we couldn't dock because of the weather. The Atlantic was smooth. I think the original idea (not from me) was for a TA and repositioning cruise forum

  4. Most times we cruise we decorate our door because it's a fun thing to do. If people don't like walking past it, use the other corridor. We cruise often for a birthday or anniversary so we are given balloons on the doors to start. There is a thread onf fun door signs here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=628148

Personally I don't get cruising with a stuffed animal, but if that's what people want to do....why not....after all it is THEIR holiday cruise... let people spend it how they want. Life is too short to worry about minor things

  5. We have booked an Amazon Adventure cruise for next Feb/March and all I can says is I've been very frustrated with FO. We have booked direct with the company as we live in Spain, so will need to fly to UK before the cruise to pick up their charter flight from Gatwick. We booked in April 2015 so 10 months in advance and there was little information available then re flights, excursions etc but now only 3 months away we still cannot get information about flight times (we need these to arrange connecting flights and travel arrangements) The brochure lists port times as am or pm., so we cannot give timings to any tour operators we want to arrange private tours with, there are a few details of FO tours available, but we can't book them until after the tour brochure comes out about 6-8 before departure. We chose FO because of the good reports we'd had about them also because we wanted to do this particular itinerary. So far this has been a very different experience than other cruise lines we've been with.

  6. Merino wool thermal underwear, opals and if you're visiting the west of Australia pearls from Broome (no I didn't know they had them until we visited...check Google) Wine from NZ or some nice chrystal wine glasses, knitting wool, cadburys Chocolate or products, there are some nice pieces of artwork at Te Papa Museum shop if you're visiting Wellington.

If you're visiting Sydney there's a fabulous Bead and Button shop almost at the port called Buttons, buttons, buttons,25 Nurses Walk, The Rocks again check google, it's a fabulous place even if you're not a sewer. OH also bought a Burma Kangaroo leather bush hat again Google for pix) and a Kangaroo leather skin wallet. You could also get a gold nugget as a pendant at Ballarat, I bought mundane things like nail polish I hadn't seen before and also Opal ear rings, but the one thing we wish we had bought from Paddy's Market in Sydney was a walking stick which had a variety of extras attached, eg a hook for your jacket, a holder for a bottle of water and all types of natty gadgets. There are many place where there are really nice handicrafts and then there are others where you can get a dried centipede....yeuk. I bought several charms when we were in AUS and NZ eg Kiwi, koala, which I add to my USB & journals which have all the photos and journals relating to the holiday.

Jewellery packing, I use those little individual organza gift bags for each piece of costume jewellery...they're so cheap on Ebay or the Chinese shops, although my "real" stuff has its own proper boxes

  8. A med cruise is great, but very Port intensive so gets quite tiring, so I suggest if you can, move date from August to perhaps June or mid September . Most years August is HOT and sometimes HUMID, this year we've had shade temps in mid 40C, certainly much too hot for sight seeing and next year is due to be the same.

  9. also we have found that the cabin windows are not that easy to see out from unless you're standing or perching on the bed. For the best experience you need to be out on deck and generally wrapped up warmly. Fingerless gloves are a good idea sooo you can use camera effectively. On the ships we've been on the stewards also come round with trolleys of hot drinks. We've been lucky enough to have been Round the Horn in both directions and in good and bad weather.

  10. Rafa Rafa Rafa...great guide, he knows soooo many people while you're out and about with him and ifyou have a list of places you particularly want to visit he'll work with you so you can do all you want. We spent the day with him in March this year

  11. Thanx for the information Gill, We are going on the Amazon Adventure next Feb. We haven't been on a Fred cruise for nearly 20 years (we usually go Princess or HAL) so it will all be a bit different to us. The choco sounds great and something to become easily addicted to. reading bits and pieces about Braemar, it seems a bit strange to us to have late dinner, but have topair it with an early show..not quite sure how we'll manage that. As this will virtually be our first time on Fred Olsen, have you got any other tips, hints etc which may be helpful. Our cruise was almost sold out when we booked and our cabin is 3070.

  12. quote < I picked up the inclusive menu on Fred Olsen and found one page of inclusive drinks, draught beers and ciders, opened cans of Spitfire Strongbow, Carlsberg and Heineken. House wines, House Spirits, minerals - pepsi, lemonade, tonic water, ginger ale served by the glass, juices orange, apple, pineapple, cranberry and tomato served by the glass, and mineral/spring water served by the glass.

First impressions were disappointing, but we found that we could have other drinks on the menu at 50% cost so that was not too bad. £4.80 cocktails charged at £2.40, £2.90 liqueurs charged at £1.45, my favourite punchless pina colada from £2.70 to £1.35. snip....

We worked round it ok and were able to drink what we wanted when we wanted, but coffee charged at full price from a bar, but choco of the day at half price.>

Thanx for that Gill. Did you try any of the house wines at all if so were they any good?

    What is choco??

  13. This year I'm using a ringed binder to keep my paper copies of port research notes in (they're also kept on USB) hotel reservations etc are ready to be printed off as are Insurance certificate, luggage labels, info to put inside the cases, flight and train tickets. Then eventually these will be printed off and placed in concertina file with port notes to take with us. Everything else is on USB which will also come with us with a spare to take photos. This year I am also taking an A5 folder for my paper notebook, (normally I just take a notepad to keep notes from trips or lectures but this time I thought I'd look a bit smarter) ALso will use this for journalling.

I know there are all sorts of apps I could use, but I'm not that tech savvy and when we did need to make use of insurance stuff they wanted hard copy.

  14. I've never had exotic nails like the parrots before and I'm not sure my nail tech would be able to cope with 10 of these so probably I will just have a couple done. This particular design was done by a German technician, I've been in touch with her and they are Gel nails, with the decoration done with a bit of free hand, airbrush, water decals and tattos. Apparently tou can but tattoo paper/film on which you can print your design (inkjet printer), then cover with film, print transfers to film and then you place the film on your nail and the picture is transferred, then you varnish over the top to preserve, so I'm going to give it a go. I've got a few months to practice It's like using a temporary skin tattoo but on your nails http://www.ebay.de/bhp/tattoo-folie

You can also get stuff to print your own design water decals
