    I heartily agree.

This is a major crisis. People in the U.K. and the US are only at the beginning. It’s not going to clear up in a few weeks. The cruise lines are cautiously only cancelling cruises OFFICIALLY for 30-60 days. Undoubtedly they have plans afoot to cancel many more, and for many months.  But this policy stops a deluge of people wanting to cancel months in advance.

The date by which they claim to be restarting cruises is a smokescreen to try to limit the damage day by day.

Ports are shut, entire countries are shut, where are these cruise ships going to go? If the Caribbean islands start being affected they will be fighting for their lives.  They won’t want ships full of people docking.

In Italy, which is in lock down after several weeks of the virus, HUNDREDS of people are dying each day, and not all of them are old with underlying conditions. That statement only leads to a sense of false security, and makes people think it’s only like the flu. It isn’t.

This is a totally new situation. NOBODY has any of the answers, least of all me, but I can see the way things are going. Much as I love cruising,  and am devastated that something which my husband and I love is no longer a possibility, I am bright enough to realise that surviving this virus is all we can hope for. THAT is our priority at the moment - SURVIVAL!

If, at some later stage, we can return to our cruising pattern of several cruises a year, then that will be both a miracle and a joy.

I agree with your post as a 70 year old cruiser living in UK, sorry we aint seen nothing yet.

  2. I'm not sure there is an easy (inexpensive) way to get from Cape Liberty to Manhattan on your own, especially for a few hours. If you are under a time constraint, I would see what the options the cruise line offers.

I would not want to get off at Southhampton and try to see London on my own.

    Thanks

if you ever do Southampton to London on your own

trains takes 90 mins into Waterloo & every 30 mins

    booked early £12

  3. Our neighbours in next door cabin went by local taxi/van with others, done dockside and said it was a waste of time and money.

Only the beach bar is there all the rest of location are shells just done up for the filming, for example the police station was a boarded up Wharehouse.

And quite a ride to get there.

  4. The ship will not leave without them.

We have been on a cruise that left port with passengers still on shore, and had to turn back around because one woman had minor children aboard (the mother was NOT on an RCCL excursion). If the OP is on a ship excursion and her 5 year old child is in AO, the ship will not leave.

To answer the OP's other question, AO is open all day (while in port) on port days, and they bring the children to lunch.

Oh yes they might do this, very rare I am sure but once 2,000 passengers were left behind shoreside in Villafranche as they could not be tendered back to the ship as it was too dangerous high winds and bad seas they had to bus them to Marseilles.

  5. Really have enjoyed all you had to say about your Viking cruise.

We get on board their newest ship tomorrow and cruise from Rome to Israel then finish in Athens and are getting pretty excited about it.

Have done 2 river cruises with them this summer and they were excellent so we knew their ocean going vessels would be great too and you have made us so eager to get started.

Thank you for all your hard work in putting your review together.

  6. We suffered with obnoxious table mates on a Med cruise some years ago now and asked to be moved which they did.

We then had a great table but soon discovered they had put all the complainers together but it was great and we had a wonderful cruise specially at Dinner time.

  7. VAT or value added tax is up to 20% in UK

Starts at zero on things like Children's clothes [so if you fit into small sizes buy them as they are 20% cheaper,I buy kids socks.]

Then there is another % on fuel and 20% on some foodstuffs, washing powder and meals eaten in house restaurants

If you look at our Bakeries for example that have a cafe attached there is one price to eat in and another to take away.

But as has been said for a meal the VAT is in the price it should show on your receipt as it will on goods bought at a Supermarket.

  8. Molded is not showing possible tours for this city either. They just mention about seeing gardens and house structure. Right now, doesn't sound so interesting

Molde is known as the City of Roses and as such it is very beautiful, have stopped there only once and loved walking the town, nor many cruise ships have it on their itinerary.

  9. And therein as they say lies the rub.

Ships unlike a fixed asset like a hotel or resort are mobile.

Cruise lines can very easily relocate their assets to where they determine market conditions are more advantageous to them. Hence, RCL placing a new ship in China.

If competition is to stiff and margins can't be met, in one location, the ship can easily be moved to someplace else.

True but you cannot move the ports.

People will always want to visit classic cities and not many of them in China plus how long before China has its own cruise ships?

  10. Just done our first Avalon after 2 with Viking.

Both are very similar, liked the free car to the airport and back with Avalon and the fact our tips were included but did think on our cruise the food was not as good as Viking, either in choice or taste.
