Better read the policy.  Twice.  Question every paragraph that details coverage and exclusions.  Understand if there is any wiggle room, they'll issue a denial.

Read customer reviews and complaints on the BBB before buying.   Never take recommendations from people who only know how fast they deposit the premiums.  Listen to people who have attempted to make claims.  See how many of them know what color the checks are, and how long it takes for them to arrive.

Allianz has been very good to us through the years. I was just wondering how people work things that have extended travel dates. Thank you for the feedback….I did reread and called. It is never easy and so much for coverage. We were very lucky with the trip we took out of the country several years ago…..they paid more than I expected. Thank you.

The type of insurance we get, with the coverages that we want, requires that we include ALL non-refundable costs (and also includes the initial deposit even if that was at one time refundable).

So we sometimes try to make hotels "guaranteed to a credit card" (and cancellable such as within 48 hours of arrival) but not actually "paid" to keep the insurance costs down.

In some cases, it's the full non-refundable airline fare, too.  In other cases, if there's a "change fee" or "cancellation fee", then that's all we need to insure.  We try to use awards for wonderful premium international flights (best use of awards ever! 🙂 ), and then it's just the fee to return the awards to the account.

Yes, any pre-paid but refundable costs do not get included in the total needing to be insured... for *our* policy type.

Make sure that you understand how *your* policy works, etc.

Thank you….flying flatbeds free too! Have managed for years by saving those miles for overseas travels. Thank you. Looks like we do the same.

  3. Thank you for all of the responses.i have used Allianz for years and just spoke with their sales department. They were fabulous when i caught covid on the second to last day of our cruise a few years ago when it was mandated we had to stay in Canada another ten days. They told me since I got sick onboard with a pandemic illness that even though my trip only insured the cruise  they would continue coverage since I caught it during the cruise. They ended up paying for ten days of hotels and food beyond the cruise. We were amazed so I stick with them.

Their agent just told me I needed to cover non refundable items on this policy. If we stay a few days with friends in between or in refundable hotels which I always book no need to cover them. In Fiji we prepared several thousand ahead for a hotel and must cover that. She also said the cruise lines can not charge for taxes or port charges if we are not there and have to refund that which I had thought for years.

I know every policy is different. Thank you all for the feedback.

    Much appreciated.

  4. We are not new travelers and have traveled the world. I booked Allianz the first day we booked our cruise and am now adding the other parts of our seven week journey. We will be back in Sydney, Fiji, back to Sidney for the 17 night repositioning.

When insuring the amount for the cruise I usually keep the taxes and port fees off. I am curious what others do. I think the company has to refund the taxes if you have to cancel. Not certain about the port charges though. This would be before sailing and not a trip interruption where it probably is more complicated.

    Just wondering.

    Thank You,

    Karen

I was positive on our Canada NE cruise for 9 days out of the 12 we were on , my husband was positive for 7 days.
we paid for the cruise partly with a cruise credit and partly with cash. How will we be refunded ?

Call celebrity and ask for the engagement office or the refund office. If an agent booked you I don’t know if you need to go through them. I book directly with C.

We are Australian and were supposed to be on the Eclipse until it got back to Australia.  We are in the same situation as you, but we were told by the driver of the coach we were on, there was actually 4 coaches of positives, so 200 people.  We only discovered at 8pm on the final night that we had to go as that was the day my husband tested positive, as that is when they tested the B2Bers.

Celebrity has not let our TA know anything of what we need to do next and if we could even rejoin the Eclipse to get home.

Hmmmm I was on those buses. 200? Not surprised. Hardly anyone wore masks on the cruise. We did in many places and I still got it. I hope you were able to get in touch with someone. One of the reasons I book directly with Celebrity. Try to contact the engagement center yourself. Hope you are all doing well……

You were on a cruise a year ago.  We were on a similar cruise in June 2022 and the rules you stated were no longer in effect.  This cruise did not end in Canada but Boston.  All who had Covid just got off the ship and went home by flight or however means they had planned.

Canadian law was just changed two weeks ago. Ended up ending on the last day of my quarantine.  Boston is in the US. No mandate there.

Hopefully the cruise line is covering the quarantine costs and they set you up in a half decent hotel.

Staying in quarantine for 10 days should avoid infecting others on the flight and once you get home family, friends and co-workers.

What your seeing here is the weird division of powers we have in Canada.  The federal government has responsibility to regulate to border entry, and inter-provincial transportation and international transport.  Cruise lines and airlines  fall into that.  They are saying 10 days.

With some very limited exceptions the feds don't have responsibility for local health and worker safety.  Each province establishes the rules there and they are saying 5 days.

I believe the US government also has some rules about people entering the US.

That makes it more understandable to me. Thank you. The US? We have different rules every three blocks. Not what it used to be. Covid has split our country so……sadly.

    Thank you.

  9. Glad to find this thread.

Were any of you mandated to remain in Canada for ten days after the day you tested positive onboard which is considered day 0.

We sailed from Vancouver to Alaska and back to Vancouver. I tested positive three days before we arrived back to Vancouver and we were told we would have to remain in Vancouver until Oct 1 day 11. I read this but am trying to find out exactly whose law this is….Canadian, not US I suspect, or agreement with cruise lines who began to sail again in Canada.

We were escorted off the ship to busses….almost 50 on this sailing. Canadians dropped at parking lots to get their cars to drive home and others like us (we are American) were dropped at the hotels we had to find with a letter saying Celebrity will pay 250 per night for 10 nights and 100 a day for food. The Canadian citizens are told they can return to work on day 5 with no symptoms after a positive test. Not certain why we are here for 10 plus one day.

    Any insight appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Karen

  10. Looking for some information. I tested positive for Covid (masked throughout) on a Celebrity cruise three days before we ended the cruise in Vancouver with 55 others. I was told by the cruise Covid coordinator that we would have to remain in Canada for a period of ten days post day 0 the day I tested.

We are in Canada now. We are American citizens and were tod the first time we can fly out is Oct 1 after quarantine. The Canadian government tells people who were positive with no symptoms that they can return to work after day 5. We are trying to figure out whose law this is. Does anyone on this board know. All we have is a contact with the cruise operator.

Just trying to get the facts straight.

    Thank You,

    Karen

I guess it's called Sitka Ride bus. Blue line, red line etc. It doesn't run on Sundays.

We ended up renting a car through Turo. They will deliver to the post. It is the air bnb of cars. Great reviews we shall see.

We were one of the very first ships of the season and Juneau Car Rental kindly delivered our car to port for us and allowed us to leave it there for them to pick up. I understand they have continued to do this throughout the season. So please note that my initial post was based on the information they were communicating with customers prior to the season beginning. Thankfully, they figured out a way to make it more convenient for their customers and we couldn't be happier with their service. It's a great company and clearly willing to go the extra mile. We will always choose Juneau Car Rental for our trips to Juneau as they have more than earned our business. Very happy customer here!

I believe I tried calling and emailing and never got a response. That is why we went with Turo. Are they still in business?

Because we are in the same boat I checked with Evergreen taxi in Juneau and their web site said about $22 to airport one way. Not ideal but we still want the car. Our port time is 1:30 so we are hoping to catch the 2 pm shuttle. If not we will just taxi it. Disappointing for sure but it sounds like it couldn’t be helped as it appears they lost their kiosk location at Dock AJ.

We decided to use TURO in Alaska. Most will bring the cars to you. This is the Airbnb for cars. Never used them but great reviews.

My understanding, from a friend who was on the Eclipse earlier this summer,  is that the Eclipse is docking at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal located at Halibut Point Road.  The owners of the terminal provide shuttles (free to passengers) which drop folks off at the Harrigan Centennial Center.

Thank you….found a car that will meet us there too.

    karen

  15. Does anyone know which place we will be docking at in Sitka. There are 2. One close to many areas and the other further out needing a shuttle in. Last time we were close but I think that might be priority for Princess. That was the only non celebrity we took in 25 years.

    Thanks,

    Karen

PS the specific dock is not on the cruise schedule site and it appears you need some sort of clearance for it.

We will be in Sitka on a Sunday later this month.  After we take the shuttle bus will we be able to get a taxi or city bus to take us to the Fortress of the Bears?

I was wondering the same. Found an small two hour tour from the visitor center I am considering. Not certain where we dock or if we dock in Sitka. Last time I thought we were close to the town. Following.

  17. We decided to fly into Seattle as we could get a direct flight and have ten days to play with. I did find some rental cars opening up for one way rentals as the months went by. Everything is in flux now because they have just started cruising. We are not going until Sept. Did book home from VC and decided to stay a day as the flight we were on we would never make. Life is changed and will probably never return to what we had. That happens post pandemics historically.

A lot depends on the capacity of the particular sailing.  I have sailed recently on a couple cruises with less than 1,000 passengers and they were letting many people in ahead of their time.  They did it in order, but once the appropriate time line entered, they just kept letting other times in.  I expect this to change as capacity increases.

Do not try to board earlier than 11:00 in Tampa.  They do not even open their gates until then, and on our Jan. cruise no one except suites boarded before 11:30.  That may have changed since then but FYI

Thank you…they changed the site around a few years ago. I am lost sometimes,

  19. I have not seen much about this on other threads. And I don’t see a search icon unless I am missing something.
Many of us who have sailed Celebrity for years have gone to board the ship at 11am in places like Ft Lauderdale or Miami….Are we still able to show up early as we have in the past or do we need to show at a special time provided on our boarding pass. I know in the past those who could get to the ship early were always allowed to board. Anyone know if this has changed?

    Thank You

Hubby asked me if this had come up on any threads,  if it has then I missed it so asking. His question has anyone who became an inmate on Deck 3 whilst cruising still been testing positive on the last day of their cruise? If so how did Celebrity deal with that?

That leads to another question, the recognised isolation time is five days, if one is negative after those five days are you released back to your own cabin? If on the other hand one is still testing positive which can be ten days or longer even if asymptomatic I presume you are kept in isolation until negative?

Also, am I right in thinking if one half of a couple is positive and one negative, only one is put into isolation? As I have MS this is a concern as I need help with certain parts of everyday living.

We just booked a last min for June to get back on board. Live 40 min from port.

What I suspect is happening is each ship is handling the issue differently. Some balcony for balcony. Others I read window or none which I would freak from. I have a friend with MS. Might want to get a doctors letter to bring with you just in case you need assistance and they don’t let you stay together.

Up until yesterday every morning announcement from the Captain said that there were no cases of Covid in either the crew of the passengers.
Yesterday he announced that there were two positive crew members and one passenger. The close contacts had been informed and were now part of the test every morning brigade.
Last night my husband had a headache. He suffers from ocular migraines from time to time and we thought we should wait until morning before asking the Medical staff to come to our suite and test him.
This morning we arrived in Madiera and the  headache was still a problem and had moved to his sinuses.
Other than that he felt fine. We had noticed a few other diners in Luminae coughing and blowing their noses and there was a woman in the Retreat who was coughing pretty actively and not bothering to leave the area.
So we called the Medical Department. They sent a nurse to the suite and she took his vitals and performed a PCR test.
it seemed to take forever to get the results, but that was probably more due to our impatience.

    He tested positive.
They then sent a Medical team to test me. I tested negative.

They sent a hazmat suited and hooded employee to escort him to his home for the next 5+ days.
He was placed in a C-3 Infinite balcony cabin on Deck 12.
I thank the people who came before us and obviously helped enact the change from Ocean View for Isolation to at least a balcony.
Tonight we both ordered room service and actually ordered the same food.
We did the right thing just like JetBlue did.
We have a lot of loose threads to take care of though.
We have booked on Regal Princess for  May 7. We disembark the Edge on May 6.
We have three weeks on the Regal and have our flight back home on May 29.
I booked the flight on the very first day the flights opened.
I paid an insanely low price for the First class return tickets.
I need to find out our options.
We disembarked a 60 day Cunard South America cruise on March 17, 2020. That was the day that the country shut down. "
When we entered the embarkation area on April 22 of this year  I could not stop crying. I was so joyous to be doing what we love.
We have had some serious health issues this past year. We have no idea how much time anyone of us has left. So we are NOT ready to give up cruising.
I just wish that there were a better way to handle the covid stuff.
I mentioned on an earlier thread that when I had the flu in 2018, despite having the "Senior Citizen double trouble shot" and a bout of the flu in January at home, we were on the Queen Elizabeth World Cruise. I went to the Medical center and asked to be seen. I was quarantined to my suite and visited twice a day. We were off the coast of Australia. There were quite a few others who were ill as well. Not everyone went to the Medical Center. I have a feeling that this is the same on every voyage.
So I just wanted to update regarding the Covid situation on THIS Transatlantic.

Thank you for the update and I hope you both continue to do well. I would be in tears when we board as well in June. We have traveled around the world on Celebrity and had btb btb btb booked prior to shutdown to Japan and Asia. Have decided to try an eight day close to home as a first. Grounded after 25 years is tough.

Question….are you still able to get onboard early as we all did before Covid or are they rigid about boarding. We always checked in around 11am.

I agree with above comments - that if you have never been to Pinel or Orient, go to Orient this first time.

I would suggest a tour there. They just drop off and pick up. We spent a great deal of time on the French side for years. Driving back to the ship could be a nightmare traffic is so bad and slow on cruise days. I am not certain what on OB is up and running. We loved the French Restaurant on the beach for lunch and Celebrity used them for years chairs and umbrellas but I am not certain who has recovered since the hurricane.

I was looking at this thread as I couldn't find a rental car from Vancouver to Seattle in September.  Once I saw the 2 day comment above, I checked Orbitz -($600 for 2 days) then I checked Costco ($326 for two days.)  I booked Costco so thanks for the 2 day tip!

I finally found a few better rates. I think they are releasing more cars as time goes by.
