  1. We also used Alitalia's Premium Economy last year, and are doing it again soon.

Not only was there more leg room, but the seats were wider.

They also had a "real" foot rest to support the legs and feet.

If you get a regular coach class seat in a row with one less seat, the seat you have will probably still be the narrower "regular" coach seat.

And if you go for the "3 seats for 2 passengers", make SURE that the armrests are not fixed, or you'll lose most of the benefit of that extra space for your hips.

Do take a look at SeatGuru.com before choosing the specific seats.

Thank you...I am always concerned about fixed seats and do check seat guru. We will probably go for the upgrades....we do very well with FF seats overseas and can not always fly free :)

  2. Thank you for the response. I like to use my FF miles on flights that are much longer....usually Australia and Asia. I can get Business Class on United but they connect and it would be a much longer flight (s). I checked upgraded seats and they looked to be $500 for what I think is economy plus but will recheck with your info.

Since I recently had 2 hip replacements I might just see about booking 3 seats for 2 of us and I notice on the plane I think they are using out of MIA that there are 3 seats in the middle of the plane towards the back instead of 4 across. We booked one of those odd rows on a BA flight last year towards the back of the plane and the extra space was terrific. I will continue to look and might pay for the upgrade if that is the only way to ensure comfort.

    Thank you for your response....

  3. NOTE: I have also posted this on the cruise air thread and checking out flyer talk threads which does not have much recent info on this specific subject that I have seen yet...

Well I have struggled with choosing them for years and used them last on a domestic flight in Europe and it was fine...but it was a 2 hour flight and not a 9. Reviews continue to be not good for cleanliness and attitude especially in coach. With that being said they are the only NS Direct right now from Miami. I have read some reviews of newer planes being used in JFK and Newark but am not certain how the flights are running from Miami? Cost is not the issue....convenience is.

Thank you in advance for your responses....

  4. I also do not shop for price but convenience....and have always purchased upgrades to economy when they have them and they are not outrageous. Just checked upgrades on Alitalia and it was almost 300pp. Too high for me. But 100-150 pp no problem.

  5. I panicked for years about being asked to get off or buy another seat...especially on SW. However we travel around the world and have never had a problem on any airline...even SW although they frightened me the most. My husband is 145 pounds and I would always book the window seat and squish towards the window. I was terrified though but the staff was always terrific. And I used the extender...dressed modestly...and smiled. So I understand your concerns but don't make yourself crazy.

Years ago United put a statement out that if a person of size was next to a partner and was not invading for lack of the word they used they would leave you alone.

Cultures are interesting too. Hawaiian which has many large size people offered us a 3 across for nothing as a convenience on a flight.

I am now 60 pounds less but still overweight....I certainly understand.

    Enjoy your trip!

  7. We used them in Hong Kong 2 years ago and I think I might have used them elsewhere. I liked going through the company as our meeting place was confusing and the company responded right away and the guide found us within 10 minutes. I think all of their guides were rated and I only contacted the ones who had great reviews. Our guide was terrific and she took us to some places that we would not have seen in a structured tour. Unfortunately she was no longer on the list when I went to refer her this past year.

  8. Thank you all. Wonder which ship did the Chocolate Martini's??? We found the same on Celebrity. Some Elite lounges served more than others. And when the ship was too full on the TA's they gave vouchers out for several bars. 3 pp. Since I don't drink much I got water bottles which ranged in sizes from bar to bar....

Looking forward to the Oasis and seeing this magnificent ship. Great being back in S Florida where one can book a week before and run to the ship in 35 minutes!!!

  9. We are sailing on the Oasis this weekend. A last minute booking of a ship we need to see. We are Elite members on Celebrity and when I read the perks today online at RC's site it said they serve wine, champagne and soft drinks in the Diamond Club and other drinks are 25% off. I have read many posts tonight on this site but have not found an answer to this question.

Has RC changed their policy? Do they serve martini's for free in the Diamond Club like the Elite lounges do on Celebrity?

Appreciate a response from anyone that might know if there has been a recent change or was this always their policy. I remember our last cruise with them and am certain we got alcohol drinks as Diamond members.

    Thank You,

    Karen

  10. Has anyone done this? It's one of Celebrity's "shore" excursions and maybe others' too.

Husband uses a cane to walk and is not feeble but is not athletic either. Is this doable?

We did it twice. Once when we were in St Marteen before the ships were doing the race and another with our family while cruising. It is actually or was one sail racing the other and it can be somewhat strenuous. They ask for volunteers to work the sails and other things and one has to hold on for dear life if they are just observers.

It is a lot of fun and a terrific experience but when we went it was not a smooth sail.

  11. No worries

Someone at Celebrity seems to be a little confused. 12.30 (or sometimes 1.00pm) is the earliest flight time that cruise lines recommend for those taking ship's transfer buses to Heathrow, not when the coach arrives at Heathrow.

A 2pm flight is no problem at all, extraordinary circumstances excepted.

I used to drive cruise transfer coaches.

The first to Heathrow usually leave the pier around 8am (mainly folk with early flights & unassisted disembarkation) and the last around 9am to 9.30.

Each usually has passengers for just one terminal to avoid the need for segregated luggage, but the last one takes all the stragglers, including those bound for airport hotels.

Even the last Heathrow coach would be expected to arrive by around 11am.

That said, for two passengers or more, a private transfer at £90+ for the vehicle may be cheaper than cruise transfers as well as more comfortable.

Try http://www.smithsforairports.com or http://www.westquaycars.com both of which are based at the Southampton end and are regularly used & recommended by CC members.

    JB :)

Thanks JB. My thought exactly. Celebrity does these things alot and I know the ship is usually cleared by 9 to 10AM in the morning. But when I called the Celebrity contact person (without asking for a senior customer service person) the response I got made no sense. We thought the transfers would be best this trip as I am not certain how far I can walk yet but I might consider the private transfers. I have the names of the companies as well.

    Thank you for reassuring us.

  12. We are booked on the TA ending in Southhampton this April with Celebrity. We have sailed with Celebrity the past 18 years but usually book our own transfers as we tend to spend several weeks before or after the cruises in Europe and the UK touring. I can not get a clear answer from Celebrity about arrival times at Heathrow and their website posted arrival at Heathrow for transfers from the ship at 12:30PM. I think this is not what they meant to post but with 3 phone calls to them and Choice Air no one had an answer.

We have a 2PM plane and will never get through Heathrow (where we fly from all the time).

Would like to know if others have used the ship transfers and arrived in a reasonable time at the airport. I prefer 2 1/2 to 3 hours at Heathrow when flying International. If not we will just book a private transport. Recent surgery so we decided to fly home directly with the quickest airport transfer.

    Thoughts? Experiences?

    Thank You,

    Karen

  13. I’m wondering what is the value added by using RIL for a transfer from FCO to our precruise Rome hotel? I understand that taking the train is easy but I have no interest in schlepping my luggage after an all night flight so I can clearly see the value of paying 40 Euro for a taxi. My specific question is what “extra” value does RIL provide over a taxi for a transfer? After reading this thread there is no doubt they provide extra value on tours, but my question is specifically on a transfer.

I have done this trip twice and we usually stay in Civitavecchia before we cruise. We have however traveled to Rome and Italy several times.

While others say the train is easy we no longer find carrying luggage on a train and finding places for it as we have done in the past that easy anymore. And this topic always comes up on this thread. I don't know what RIL charges or why they would be better than other transports. We usually have the hotel we stay at pick us up at the A/P but after so spending so much money on a trip it amazes me how people what the cheapest way to get to the port. I might add we drive through Europe all of the time and have taken luggage and trains and booked luggage in train stations until we return to pick it up. But cruise luggage is more than we care to train with.

  14. We booked with Romeinlimo this past November and we were thrilled with the service and our guide. I usually book private guides throughout the world when we travel and not usually through a company. We felt the quality of our guide was terrific and he took care to ensure that all of our needs were met. We have been to Florence and Pisa several times but we were traveling this trip with friends who had never been there.

I was also referred to another company in Barcelona by Romeinlimo and they were just as good.
