  1. While each restaurant has a good selection of dishes, there is the risk of not wanting what you booked. Because each restaurant is a specific type of cuisine and if you are having to pre-book weeks if not months in advance, you run the risk of not being in the mood on the night for the restaurant cuisine your pre-booked for. Hmmm… this could be a bit of an issue for those that like to decide what type of food they want to eat right before they eat it. At least in the MDR there were varying degrees of choice of different styles of food.

  2. Sorry to be so negative this morning. It was quite the slap on the nose to have so many of the things I was most looking forward to in a cruise taken away all at one go. Especially after I'd been so careful to make certain scheduled MDR dining times would be available to us if we wanted them. I know there was a post earlier that showed more than three no surcharge restaurants.

Can anyone link me to where Royal has posted which restaurants have a surcharge?

Surely there is a misunderstanding somewhere I just can't help but think. If there are only 3 no surcharge restaurants, Royal is definitely cheapening their image going with the Spirit Air plan.

I shall certainly be smiling and happy on the cruise, of course, don't worry!

Having thought on it a bit, I now think surely we should be able to just book dinner every night in advance and then make changes. Surely they will build some sort of kiosks in to this new ship where people can update their reservations or make new ones on the fly according to availability so that new friends can dine together if they like. Aside from trying to change to eat with unexpected friends, surely there will be many people who will find they've scheduled dinner smack in the middle of some activity they wish to enjoy once they get the schedule of activities. Certainly if they haven't planned ways for people to change reservations on the fly, Guest Services is going to come to hate this new dining plan.

Here is the link to the RCCL Quantum site:

    http://www.royalcaribbean.com/quantumoftheseas/dining/

You can sort by complimentary and for pay as well as by meal time. Menus for each restaurant are located in each restaurants page.

  3. After reviewing the menus of both the free and for pay restaurants, I'm impressed. There is a lot of variety between the restaurants and within each. I can see lots of different dishes in both $$ and free restaurants. Hopefully they taste as good as described!!

  4. I don't buy the argument that a Passport costs SOOOOO much that it is just too much of a burden to get one. If one can afford to pay out the big payment for a cruise, the cost of a real passport is pocket change in comparison. If it is such a big deal, skip an excursion and a drink or two. There, I just covered the cost of the passport. :)

If you read back over the thread, an earlier poster mentioned cost as the reason they did not want to get a passport. A PC is a lower cost alternative, though as pointed out has restrictions. I have a passport (and a PC) and couldn't agree more that in the scheme of what one pays for a vacation, a passport that is good for 10 years is a very low cost line item on your overall vacation budget.:)

  5. I think you have some false security regarding the Passport card. It is just as worthless as a DL and BC if you miss the ship and have to fly home from a foreign port. It would still take a couple days to get everything worked out.

Agree, flying with it would be a no go… same would be true (or made more difficult) if you had only a DL or BC. That's why I said a passport would be best.

  6. The passport card works for cruises and land crossings. If you get stuck in a foreign port, while not a passport it is still a travel document that is recognized as such, issued by the Federal Government unlike a DL or BC which is issued by a state.

If you are traveling out of the country, there is no question a Passport is the best, but if cost is a concern and one is only traveling on closed loop cruises to the Caribbean or Canada (or is doing a land crossing to Canada or Mexico) then a Passport Card is the next best thing.

  7. On our tour in '09 no food on the tour was included except for a lunch box on the Tundra Wilderness Tour.

    We went to Anchorage

    Talkeetna

    Denali

    Fairbanks

    Two train journeys

In all places we were able to find a variety of dining places at various budget levels.

The train dining was very good, and I felt that despite having you as a captive guest, the pricing was fair.

  8. You need to take another look at the way things work.

You get to the ship and show them your passport, then get on the ship.

I get to the ship and show them my BC and DL and get on the ship.

You know where you keep your PP at home so it is easy to find.

I keep my BC and DL and I know where they are so it is simple.

If you lose your PP or forget it at home it is a real pain.

If I lose or forget my DL and BC it is a real pain.

please tell me how your life is simpler by having a PP.

    Simple:

    1) There is no questioning what works and what doesn't.

    2) IF you get stuck, miss the ship in a foreign port a Birth Certificate/DL will make things more complex. A passport will save a lot time and frustration.

The EASIEST solution that is also cost effective is the Passport Card IF you just plan on cruises or land crossings. As previously said it works on cruises and is only $25 or $30 and is good for 10 years. If you lose your BC or DL, it could easily cost you as much if not more.

  9. Maybe the OP's issue was that the sales tables were only selling the more expensive packages. So when the RCCL staff who were manning the sales tables said could only purchase the more expensive packages, they could have meant you could only buy those specific packages at that table. If that is the case, they should have then followed up with soda packages are available at a bar.

According to the FAQs on RCCL's website, the soda package is available for purchase at the bars/lounges:

    Food & Beverage

    Print This Page

Q: Are drink packages offered onboard?

A: We offer a soda package for both kids and adults on every ship in our fleet. To purchase one, just visit any of our onboard bars or lounges.

  10. Adults are more then welcome to use the waterslide on Radiance of the Seas at least. My kids had great fun on it and they also enjoyed watching mum and dad slide down it very slowwwwly! It does not go very fast and if you are not a light weight child you may end up having to use your arms to propel yourself down to the bottom!

If you are a drunken yahoo with no kids you may be told to move on (the slide only operates under staff supervision) but otherwise go for it!

By the way anyone know if it ever operates in Alaska? My kids are the type who would go on it no matter what the temperature!

On our radiance cruise to Alaska in 2009 it operated but with limited hours. My son used it once and said it was to cold and slow. Spent the rest of his pool time in the solarium during family hours.

  11. Had lunch in the main dining room. Much more civilised and very acceptable. On sea days they offer Brasserie 30, the idea being they guarantee to serve you in 30 minutes, if that's what you want... but I don't! Why rush one of life's great pleasures, eating good food?

All were very enjoyable with the fish being my favourite. Pasta Special of the Day can be good and I had one later in the cruise. Another very good option is the Tutti Salad!, prepared with your own selection of ingredients from an extensive display, then tossed in front of you with your choice of dressing.

Thanks for your review. I've never had lunch in th MDR before and it looks good. Is the brasserie 30 menu the same everyday or does it change?

  12. Lobster tails are part of the Fisherman's Plate entree on the MDR's Jasmine menu. Strip is on the "Classics" menu and can be ordered any night. There's also a slightly better strip steak that's part of the MDR's Portobello menu.

I'm confused. I see the Fisherman's plate as part of the Shiitake menu, while the jasmine menu has rack of lamb and shrimp gyoza. Did the menus change?

  13. We have not been to Barcelona before. Our ship actually has an overnight there the last night. We've planned to do Montserrat on our own on Wednesday then back to the ship. Thursday we will debark, check in our apartment which is near Sagrada and just do some sightseeing. Friday we are planning to tour Sagrada with pre purchased tickets.

We started as 2 couples to celebrate our friends anniversary & it has now morphed to 16 of us! We will be looking for a place to do an all-inclusive tapas/wine dinner on Friday evening as a group before we all travel home. We have people coming from Texas, Indiana & Alabama (all related by marriage or family friends). If you know of some place that wouldn't be too awfully expensive, I'd appreciate a recommendation.

Also if there are any other must-eat places let me know!

First off, thanks for the awesome pictorial review. Not only the time to write it but also the time of taking the pictures so all of us can "cruise along".

In regards to Europe, we spent a week in Rome last year and ate at some amazing places:

    Near the Vatican:

Ristocchio - probably our best meal - though the chef/owner is very traditional and does not serve Americanized versions of Italian (i.e. no spaghetti and meatballs). Also trust the recommendations for wine etc…

Near the Pantheon: Armando Al Pantheon - excellent Roman cuisine - though in a touristy area, this is an excellent restaurant that caters to locals.

In Trastevere: Piazza al Marmi: fantastic pizza in a city of good pizza. Open only for dinner.

Gelato: Frigidarium in old town near Piazza Navona

In Barcelona we had a really good Tapas meal at Taller de Tapas - several locations around the city. We went to the location north of Las Ramblas.

    Thanks again...

  14. This was the order on the allure western last week (and was the same as a review I read from last summer, so it doesn't seem to change much ;) ):

    Night 1 (Sunday 1/26) – Mojo (casual)

    2 (Monday 1/27) – Saffron (formal)

    3 (Tuesday 1/28) – Pimiento (casual)

    4 (Wednesday 1/29) – Basil (casual)

    5 (Thursday 1/30)–Jasmine (formal)

    6 (Friday 1/31) – ****ake (casual)

    7 (Saturday 2/1) – Pomodoro (casual)

Does the Allure eastern follow this same exact order?

    Hi Adam,

I really appreciate the opportunity to ask you questions directly. I have been reading about propulsion issues on the Allure. Can you elaborate on that situation. Have a cruise booked for May 2014 and am concerned. Thanks.

Hi Donna – Allure of the Seas currently has a small restriction on her top speed. All equipment is fully operational and there is no impact on the maneuverability of the ship or on the safety of our guests and crew.

    Really?

How can all equipment be "fully operational" when there is obviously a problem with one azipod limiting her top speed to the point that itineraries are being affected? This problem dates back a while and seems to be getting worse as time goes on. Hence the recent itinerary adjustments.

    Nice try A.G.
