  1. We have always preferred a table for 2 but now it is more of a necessity. I have TMJ and just can't carry on a conversation. It can get quite uncomfortable talking, laughing, and eating. If we have close neighbors we'll smile and say hello and then avoid any other interaction. It usually works. I guess I just thought most people that ask for a table for 2 aren't looking to converse to any extent with others.

  2. We did this cruise on the Star in 2013 and loved it. Would do it again for sure. If you are easily bored on sea days though it may not be for you. We did hear some people grumbling about too many sea days. Everybody is different but we enjoy reading and relaxing.

The weather from LA to Hawaii starts out a little cool for a few days. We had calm seas for the whole trip.

  3. Just off the Summit yesterday. Overall had a nice cruise.

We did not like the new buffet setup. For instance, four pieces of French toast were put in a basket with holes so you had to find a plate to put it on to be able to pour the maple syrup on. Of course the French toast was stone cold sitting around in a basket. I had the burger and fries from the grill that were also put in trays with holes and each time they were stone cold. The food items put in the stainless steel pans held the warmth better. I don't eat large portions of food and I also suffer from TMJ so what they felt was the portion and type of food someone was looking for in those little pans and baskets was rarely what I wanted. As far as desserts, I would prefer a variety of choices instead of all crème brulee one day, all cake another, all puddings the next, etc. I did feel most of the food I had in the buffet was tasty just not always warm.

I so wish passengers returning to their cabin after say 10:00 would be considerate and be quiet. I used ear plugs and was awoken by noisy people as late as 2:15am. It was a problem most every night. We also had passengers in 4 or more cabins across from us travelling together who tended to return to their cabin and talk in the hallway. So annoying.

Had great waiters and room attendants and the staff were friendly. Enjoyed the dining room food. Disembarkation was very organized.

  4. I've been on 36 cruises and many of them had some sick people on board. It becomes evident when they start serving passengers at the buffet, take away salt and pepper shakers, etc. Illness is found everywhere so it isn't surprising it can be brought on board intentionally or unintentionally. Poor hygiene can be seen easily on board in the public bathrooms which doesn't help the spread of illness either.

I was sick on a cruise last year but don't believe it was the noroviris it wasn't very acute. I did report to the medical clinic even though I was sick only once in the morning. I was asked to stay in my cabin for 48 hours. I was told if there was a port I wouldn't be allowed to get off the ship. No it wasn't pleasant sitting in a cabin for two days. I was treated very well with extra in depth cleaning and room service. I was not charged at the medical clinic. By reporting yourself you're doing a service to the passengers who embark next in that cabin. A special cleaning is done. I for one would like to think when I arrive in a cabin that the person before let it be known if they were sick.

  5. Since we will be embarking on the Explorer on the 31st, I have been reading the CDC site to try and get informed. I am no expert, but it does say on the CDC site that if you see someone get sick (vomiting or diarrhea) leave the area. You could get sick if you ingest germs that travel thru the air. I assumed you would get sick thru food or person to person contact.

I do wish people would wash their hands when using the bathrooms. I avoid the public bathrooms but when I have used them it is not uncommon at all to see people walk out without washing their hands. One time the person I saw continued right on to the buffet.

Sorry for the passengers on board now and hope things improve. It sounds like their cruise has not been so pleasant.
