  1. Did you make sure they put the orange sticker on it?

The orange sticker doesn't always work. I am Diamond and just cruised on the Magic Feb 3rd. We checked 2 bags, and both had priority tags and the orange tape on the plastic luggage tag holders from previous cruises. My bag came in reasonable time, not super fast but okay. A few hours later the second bag had not arrived. I asked one of the crew staff who was delivering luggage if the priority bags should have been delivered by now? He said yes. We went to guest services to describe the undelivered bag.

A while later I was walking back to the cabin and saw the bag on the bottom of a luggage cart orange tag clearly in view. I pointed out the bag and priority tag to a delivery crew person and asked him to please deliver the bag soon. He immediately rolled the cart to our cabin and offloaded our bag. Problem solved. Guest services did call later to ask if we got the bag and also sent, the next day, a bottle of wine to us with a "Sorry" note. That was unnecessary but appreciated.

  2. I too am somewhat disappointed with Carnival right now. We finished our latest Carnival cruise on the Magic last Saturday, February 10th. At that time I had no future Carnival cruises booked. But since that was my Carnival cruise #92 I will cruise with them 8 more times to achieve the free 100 cruise milestone reward. So this week I booked 2 more for this fall.

  3. You can check in online stating you'll be using a birth cert and then present the passport at the terminal. I do that every time... I'm lazy and don't feel like typing in all the info that's required with the passport online check in

I cruise Carnival at least 4 times a years and it's never been an issue. My last cruise was Nov 2017

I have always typed in all that junk on the passports and am curious. Does not doing that seem to slow down your check-in process?

  4. Carnival cruise line does not send ships to Europe. This is primarily due to the fact that Carnival Corporation has other lines that do, such as Costa, Cunard, and Princess for example. As to airfare we are taking an RCCL ship across the pond in April/May and spending another couple of weeks in Denmark and England. By the way, Royal sends a number of ships to Europe in the spring and they return to the U.S. in the fall. Back to airfare, we are flying from London with a stop in Portugal on TAP (Portugal's national airline) to Miami for a total of $628.44 for both of us. Pretty darn cheap.

How many points did they lose? Suites have been getting bonus points for quite a while. Plus they must have had enough points to earn the 13 extra nights

They didn't lose many. Back before 2011, their kids were little and they were in balcony rooms with bunk beds. When Royal converted all cruises under 12 or 13 days (I don't remember the exact number) they converted them to 7 points. That helped me because I had a few under 7-day cruises that became 7 points. But they had some 8 and 10-day cruises (and nothing under 7) that became 7 point cruises.

  6. I have had a couple snarky members in d lounge comment on how I must have walked in behind someone. I just let it go and mention to my wife in a little louder voice before we leave "honey we have got to come back here tomorrow, they get free drinks here!" 🤣[emoji23]

You should see the stares we get the next time we see those same people when we enter the d lounge.

Also have heard comments that children of d members should have to earn their own points to be admitted to lounge. I wanted to tell that person that my son is close to d+ on his own history.

My 14-year-old grandson and 11-year-old granddaughter are D+ on their own points. My daughter and son in law stay mostly in suites and ironically they were one of the few people who lost points when RCCL went to days instead of number of cruises.

  7. We just got off the Magic on Saturday after spending 7 days in a midship cove balcony. Both Sandy and I thought the cabin was fine. The balcony is small and feels more closed in because of the protective structure that forms an oval around the opening. There was no problem with noise or motion. You could see the water up close and personal, which was nice, but the view to the sky was restricted because of lifeboat placement and the balcony was more frequently wet. These cabins are slightly less expensive than an upper floor standard balcony. For our 14-day journey cruise on the Breeze in September we decided to book a standard upper floor balcony.

  8. The Triumph is starting to resemble the problems that the Destiny (also known as the "Death Star" totally unofficially) had before the major dry dock that turned her into the Sunshine. I like the Sunshine, though it has some shortcomings, it is so much better than the Destiny was. A change like that would be good for the Triumph.

  9. Just buy it after 7 or 8 in the evening of the last night. I have never had a problem taking it back to my room even on a back to back. I also have a large group of cruise friends that report the same thing

You are right, I just wonder if we continue to post about this ploy whether Carnival will tighten their scanners. They could set this up in the fun shoppes so that no more B2Bers will be allowed to take their purchases with them back to their stateroom on the last night of their first sailing. We should probably stop sharing this worthwhile bit of info.

  10. The best food is at the Steakhouse.

I don't remember any dishes I hated in the MDR, not because there aren't any, but because it could have been 30 cruises ago that I ordered it.

Like you, I cruise a lot with Carnival, not yet to 100 but getting close, so I know their menu pretty well and tend to stay with what I know. Food tastes are so personal that what I like others may not

  11. Your bad experience was an aberration, but debark screw-ups of some kind do happen too frequently. The Diamond and Platinum self-assists and sometimes FTTF are usually offered a special meeting place and escorted off first, then other self-assists are called by floor. Sometimes starting with upper floors, sometimes lower floors. Then, luggage tags numbers are called lower to higher. But there are always a number of "its all about me" cruisers who cut lines whenever they can.

  12. We have had many pagers over the years and most of the time they have had a good range. We have had hostesses tell us not to go to a specific location that is out of range. It may vary by ship. If in doubt ask the person handing you the pager.

  13. One aspect of Carnival's business plan is that carnival is an entry-level line and that many Carnival cruises will move on to the higher priced sister lines. One Carnival cruise will allow you to get past guest rates on the sister lines but this is generally higher than a Carnival cruise. RCCL and similar plan with their higher priced sister lines.

This theory makes some sense, but it would be a lot more successful if Carnival Corporate gave Carnival cruise line cruisers a little more incentive to try other sister lines. RCCL's offering to try Celebrity offers much better perks than just a past guest rate. John Heald has spoken about this for years but there are no real inducements to move to more expensive offerings.

  14. Hard to believe that Carnival has more market share than RCCL. 22% sounds high to me

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

I am uncertain, but I suspect their share is based on passenger count. Since RCCL has almost 20% more capacity it would seem likely that they would have more passengers. However, Carnival has many more 3, 4, and 5-day cruises then Royal which would lead to faster turnover of guests and a larger number of different passengers.

  15. WOW. That is amazing. But if you put little dots between the numbers, your problem is solved.

Line..................... # of ships.........PAX Capacity........ % of PAX......... %of total revenue

    Royal Caribbean..... 26........ 84,700....... 19.2%......... 14.0%

    Carnival.................. 26......... 71,300....... 22.0%.......... 8.9%

    Norwegian.............. 16......... 46,600 ........8.0%............ 8.4%

    MSC ........................15........ 44,600........ 7.2%........... 6.8%

    Princess....................17........ 42,000 ........6.4%.......... 9.1%

Thanks, Hawklvette, good to know for next time.

  16. How about a slightly different perspective? Higher market share with lower cost will lead to a smaller share of the total worldwide revenue. To have the real answer that you are pretending you already have, you need another key number - where does each cruise line fit in the cruise cost spectrum. When you get that number for each cruise line, you may be able to support the premise that you are pretending to make. Otherwise, you are doing nothing but blowing smoke.

We all know that Carnival cruise line is Carnival corporate's lowest priced and most mainstream line. And thusly will draw a smaller amount of total revenues. Even though Princess and Holland America are sister lines under Carnival corporate, they still are each attempting to attract customers from the cruisers and potential cruisers demographic. Hence to a degree, they are competitors. And I am not pretending to make a point, the numbers speak for themselves. And if you think that Carnival cruise line executives are perfectly happy with 22% of the passenger traffic and less than 9% of the revenue, while sister line Princess has just over 6% of the passengers and just over 9% of the revenue then you do not have much business acumen.

  17. I have sailed on Dream class ships 11 times, and I find the crowded feeling on this class is directly correlated to the number of passengers on that sailing. Up to 4,000 feels just fine (Carnival's listed passenger capacity is 3646 on the Dream and 3690 on the Magic & Breeze). But in reality, these ships sometimes sail with 4400 or more passengers. Then they feel crowded.

  18. Some interesting stats. from the website Cruise Market Watch:

2018 Worldwide Cruise Line Market Share

The 2018 total worldwide ocean cruise industry is estimated at $45.6 billion (a 4.6% increase over 2017) with 26.0 million annualized passengers carried (a 3.3% increase over 2017). Brand diversification of all operations is summarized below.

Line # of ships PAX Capacity % of PAX %of total revenue

    Royal Caribbean 26 84,700 19.2% 14.0%

    Carnival 26 71,300 22.0% 8.9%

    Norwegian 16 46,600 8.0% 8.4%

    MSC 15 44,600 7.2% 6.8%

    Princess 17 42,000 6.4% 9.1%

Sorry, that in spite of my best efforts this page keeps removing my spaces and squishing together my graph columns. Anyway, even though Carnival has the highest percentage of passengers at 22% these passengers, us, are only giving Carnival 8.9% of the total worldwide revenue, less than Carnival Corporations 2nd largest line, Princess, which has only 6.4% of the passengers but gets 9.1& of the revenue.

I guarantee some Miami bean counting beards are aware of these numbers and are trying to improve them

  19. Should have been a wake up call after the first one but, yeah, the backlash from this waits to be seen. Will people cancel or not book a future cruise with Carnival because of this? Will new cruisers even know or even care?

This is the thing that worries me most. Most people love the thought and experience of a cruise. When you read Facebook and Cruise Critic people are always posting "I just booked this or that, YAY" People want to look at the positive aspects of being on a cruise vacation. And with most Carnival cruises being about half filled with first-time cruisers, does Corporate think these inspections matter? I hope they do, but so far I have seen no evidence of this.

  20. Going to the CDC website for cruise ship inspection failures I compared the 2 largest cruise lines results:

    Carnival failures

    Ship Date Score

    Liberty 1/18 80

    Vista 12/17 79

    Breeze 12/17 77

    Triumph 11/17 78

    Paradise 6/17 83

    Fascination 10/16 74

    Legend 10/06 71

    Pride 8/04 83

    Victory 1/01 83

    Sunshine 1/99 81

    Fascination 6/97 74

    Fantasy 3/90 78

    Royal Caribbean failures

    Adventure OTS 10/15 84

    Majesty OTS 2/97 85

What is most disturbing to me is that Carnival has had 6 failures in the past 15 months vs 6 previous fails over more than 20 years. And the 6 recent fails are 3 times what Royal has ever had.

Thanks, Bury me at Sea I missed the Vista on the CDC site this is the correct info. I think
