  1. We're looking at the Gaelic Explorers itinerary, calling at Invergordon, Kirkwall, Portree, Tobermory, Portrush and the Isle of Man. On the date that interests me the ship would be the Wind Surf.

We usually cruise on Holland America, so this would bee quite different for us.

I'd love to hear experiences on both the cruise and the ship.

  2. You don't have to check a 28" bag on Amtrak. The bag is within the carry-on size limits. There is a storage area for larger carry-ons in each compartment.

    Amtrak's Carry-On Bag Policy:

Each passenger may bring two personal items, 25 lbs. (12 kg) and 14 x 11 x 7 inches each, and two carry-on items, 50 lbs. (23 kg) and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each, onboard. Make sure you have a tag with your name and address on the outside of all your bags.

I will have one 28" spinner and one 22" backpack. My mom will have one 24" spinner and one large tote bag. In addition to my clothes, all of our bulky items(two jackets, my hoodie, my mom's sweater, and possibly two throw blankets) will be in my 28" bag. If I was flying, I could get by with my 22" backpack and a 17" spinner.

I'd be more concerned about leaving my large bag in an open train luggage rack than I would be checking at the port! We used porters to change trains and even our two little bags were a bit of a pain....those platforms can be long and far apart. Of course YMMV!

    Have a great trip!

  3. Now about the train....we just took Amtrak home from California after a Hawaii cruise. The sleeping compartments can't handle a big bag. We had a standard carry on and a duffle bag. On one train they just fit under the made up bed and on the other we had to sleep with them on the ends of the beds. You'll need to check the 28 incher on the train, even if you don't have to on the ship.

The train trip was great, though!

  4. Just walked by Westie's library - it's on Deck 10 as part of the Crow's Nest (starboard side and a little nook by the puzzle table facing ahead). It's pretty well stocked with the usual books and they are marked but, as you probably know, HAL did away with the librarian position, so pax place the books on the old librarian's desk (old meaning the former, not that the librarian was old ;)) when done reading. Entertainment Dept. staff then periodically places them back on their respective shelves. WEDM has a pretty good selection, a happy staff/crew and the ship herself looks good! Enjoy that trip to paradise and back next month![/size

Thanks for the information. It's good to know. Reading your report with interest!
