  1. Emme ~ we LOVE to cruise where there are palm trees, too, but everyone should experience Alaska. I should have photos ready this evening and will post a link. It's beauty rivals St. John and for me, that is saying a bunch! :)

I'm glad you enjoyed the Alaska cruise Anne. My wife was in charge of planning for our 15th anniversary and "for me" (she hates cold weather!) she chose a cruise to Alaska.

One of the best trips we ever took! the scenery is incredible - I was almost evangelical in the way I told EVERYONE that they HAD to see Alaska if they hadn't already.

It was so amazing my wife didn't even mind the cold - although it was kind of weird packing so many clothes!

Welcome back - you know where you need to go next...

  2. So I guess the general consensus is that's it's not necessarily that much cheaper than taking the ships excursion but it's the fact that you get more time on St. John that everyone really likes?

I think more time and being on your own schedule is the bigger benefit, but a lot of people find it to be cheaper as well. Probably the bigger your group, the more the money saved will be significant.

I'll be on Carnival victory, 7-5, will that be sufficient timing to get to St. John and back and have a decent amount of time on the beach?
Yes. Try to get off of the ship as early as you can.
  3.

Did I read it correctly in an earlier post that you can purchase round trip ferry tickets??

I know that you can for the car barge, but I'm not sure about the "people ferry". But even if you can, I don't think there's a price break for doing so, therefore no real advantage to you.

Whats the price for the ferry??
    $6.00/Adults and $1.00/Children ages 2-11

What was the price for a taxi from where we dock to Red Hook??
    $10 per person.

Also, once we arrive at STJ, do we take another taxi to the beach?? Price??
Yes, there are open air taxis that will take you to the popular beaches along the north shore of St. John. You'll likely stop once or twice at scenic overlooks for photo opportunities. From Cruz Bay to Trunk Bay is $6 per person.

Once we are done at the beach, do we get another taxi back to the ferry or where ever we want to go??
Yes - there will be a lot of taxis in the parking lot waiting to take you back to Cruz Bay, or other places if you wish.
  4.

We are coming in on the Carnival Glory December 8th and will be there from 9-6. Is there a time change on the island during that time??

The USVIs are one time zone (hour) earlier than EST - but be sure that your watch is on ship's time - that's the one that will determine when your ship leaves.

Where will we be docking at/which ferry to take to St.John/best beach for a lazy day??
Carnival ships usually (as far as I know) dock at the Havensight Pier, but you should verify that. There are two ferries that run from STT to STJ - one leaves from downtown, which is walking distance from Havensight, and the other leaves from Red Hook, on the east end of the island. Time and cost are about the same on either one. The Red Hook ferries run more often. Using the ferry from Red Hook entails a taxi ride to get there, the downtown ferry would have you spending more time on the water. In December you *might* encounter swells that could make the longer ferry ride more uncomfortable - that depends on you and your group.

The taxis in Cruz Bay run to Trunk and Cinnamon Bays (as well as others possibly) and either one would be a good choice for a lazy beach day.

I would also like to do a little shopping while we are there, either STT or STJ. Will us going to STJ allow for this and still make it back to the ship?? What time to do we need to be back to allow for that??
"A little shopping" means different things to different people. There are some charming little shops in Cruz Bay on STJ within easy walking distance of the ferry dock. Downtown STT is somewhat of a shopping mecca I am told, with stores of all descriptions as well as a straw market, restaurants, etc. If you want to shop in downtown Charlotte Amalie I would allow at least a couple of hours for that. There is also a mall at Havensight, so if your ship is indeed docking there, you can shop within sight of your ship.

    Hope this helps!

  5. Lots of wonderful information in this thread! I am still trying to decide if we should take the ships "tour"...which only gives us 2+ hours on St. John or go on our own. About how long does it take from the ferry terminal to Trunk Bay? Would love more than 2 hours on the island, but with 2 young kids in tow I do not want to be stressed out about our time schedule. Thanks for your help!!

The ferry ride from Red Hook on STT to Cruz Bay on STJ takes about 20 minutes. Depending on the number of stops for photos, etc. the taxi from Cruz Bay to Trunk Bay will probably be about the same, maybe a little shorter.

The advantage of going on your own, particularly with kids in tow, is that if they are READY to leave, you can catch a taxi now, rather than waiting for the ship's excursion return trip.

  6. Hi,

My husband and I will be going to the Islands on a cruise for seven days. One of the stops is in St Thomas, I would love more information on how to rent the jeep and take the barge over to St John for the day.

Did the other posts on this thread give you enough information, or do you still have some questions? If so, fire away!

  7. One more thing - I looked on line and the car barge costs $30 each way. You can buy a round trip ticket on some of them for $50, but most people recommend buying one way so that you can take the next available barge when you're ready to return to STT. There's also a $3 fee that they'll charge you at Red Hook before you board for the STT-STJ leg. So that's $63 plus gas (probably no more than $10) and the rental cost.

I don't know if you could catch a $2 bus from Red Hook to Havensight (I read someone that indicated they could take it in the other direction, but not going back towards the ship). if not, then you'd be looking at $32 per person round trip from Havensight to Cruz Bay, then you'd still have to pay for some form of transportation on St. John, so the rental on STT should still make fiscal sense, not to mention that you'd be free to make your own schedule (except for the ship!).

  8. Is there any major reason to get a 4x4, or will a car be okay?

I'd get the 4x4 Wrangler if you can. You'd probably be OK with a car, but if you get any rain you'll be glad you have the 4x4 available when you're navigating some of the switchbacks on North Shore Rd. And, this may just be me, but St. John seems like a "Jeep kind of place".

Let me know if you'd like any help planning where to go/what to see once you get there!

  9. It's been awhile, but when we did this I was able to rent a jeep from one of the national chains that had a facility right in Havensight, within easy walking distance from the ship. Someone else will have to chime in with whether or not that's still the case.

We also went during slow season and you're going in high season, but you have plenty of time to get your ducks in a row.

At least you save some viable options - I'm sure you'll have a great time!

[EDIT] Budget of St. Thomas is where we rented from http://budgetstt.com/

  10. We will be on Royal Caribbean Enchantment of the Seas, docked in Charlotte Amalie on 7/5/10 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. We just learned that the Carnival will be held on St. John that day. We have never been to St. Thomas or St. John and are trying to plan our day. A couple questions for your input:

    1. Will extra ferries be in service between Red Hook and Cruz Bay because of the Carnival?

    2. Will there likely be additional ferries between Charlotte Amalie and Cruz Bay?

I have heard that the ferries will be filling up and going as opposed to just departing at their regularly scheduled times, so I'd imagine that there will be more.

    3. Is it worth the trip for Carnival or should we just stay on St. Thomas and explore some of the beaches, etc?
Depends on whether you'd prefer to be in a large street party/festival/parade atmosphere or not. Carnival is the busiest day of the year in Cruz Bay, and it may be harder to get transportation into and out of town on St. John that day, but there will be a lot of activities, food vendors, music, etc in town.

    4. It sounds like lots of places are closed for Carnival. Will that only impact St. John and not St. Thomas?

I believe that is the case. If not, someone will no doubt correct me!

  11. For those in the know [Host Anne and others] does it look like I've properly summarized my thoughts? Suggestions gratefully received.

Hi Thom. I didn't reply before because I'm missing a piece of information critical to your choice - namely, how much a taxi would charge you for that kind of tour.

Several years ago, before I'd ever done a land vacation on St. John, a group of us rented jeeps on St. Thomas and took them to St. John for the day on the car barge. From a strictly $$ point of view this would save you vs renting a car on St. John in two ways - the rental fee would be less and round trip car barge fare is a little less than round trip ferry for four.

If you decide that this might be a viable option then I'll be glad (as I'm sure will others) to help you chart a course to get the most out of your time on St. John.

  12. Hi Augie, thanks thanks!

We will snorkel in Grand Turk and Princess Cay. So it is not so necessary to snorkel in St John. Have you ever snorkeled in Grand Turk or Princess cay? If so, how is it compared to Leinster?

I've never been to Grand Turk, but I have been to Princess Cay. Leinster doesn't have the big, white sandy beach that PC does, but the snorkeling there, especially around Waterlemon Cay, is much, much better than anything I saw at PC.

We do like some secluded places with less people. Appreciate if you could recommend some?

If I had a car and wanted to be at a less crowded beach I'd take North Shore Rd. east, past Trunk and Cinnamon, to Maho Bay. You'll know you're there when it looks like you are driving just a few feet off of the beach. If there's room, just park right off of the road next to the beach, or in one of the little alcoves across the street (you may need to be towards the east end of the beach before you see these). If Maho is crowded (if you're early and it's not a Sunday it shouldn't be crowded) continue east until you see the signs to follow to take you to Francis Bay. Between those two you will get a beautiful beach, and won't have the crowds you'd have at either Trunk or Cinnamon. But you won't have facilities either. I'd suggest bringing a small soft sided cooler with some snacks and water to get you through the beach part of your day. I don't know if it's still possible to bring sandwiches from the ship or not, but there's a place in Cruz Bay, in the Mongoose Junction shopping center, which will be on your way out of town and you head towards the north shore, called Deli Grotto. Great sandwiches, big enough to share, and a lot of folks that stay on the island stop there on their way to the beach.

  13. Thank you so much! Actually I think exactly as you. I decide to give up leinster.visit Trunk first. And check out Cinnamon bay and/or Honeymoon bay. My question: is that possible to check out three places? Or only 2 places? Which way you think it is better, I mean saving time and convenient: cab or rent a car? Cuz we are not used to drive on left, and not familiar with the road.

As Islander noted, doing three beaches on a cruise ship day would be tough if you wanted to stick around long enough to enjoy the beach!

If you decide to rent a car, that changes things considerably. Driving on the left takes about 30 seconds to get used to. The speed limit is low on St. John, there aren't that many roads, and the island is pretty small, so most of your concerns about renting aren't that big of a deal. It may be difficult to secure a one day rental if you go during busy season, but you could find that out ahead of time.

It really depends on how you'd like to best spend your time. Now that I've visited St. John a few times, my priorities for one day might be much different than yours. Unfortunately, a cruise ship stop won't afford you time to do even a little bit of everything the island has to offer.

My favorite pastime on St. John is snorkeling. If I was on a cruise that stopped at St. Thomas I'd rent a car - probably on St. Thomas, but on St. John would work also. I'd drive straight to Leinster, and snorkel around Waterlemon Cay and in the shallows near the beach.

If I rented on St. Thomas I'd probably go into Coral Bay for lunch at either Skinny Legs or Shipwreck Landing (If I rented on St. John then I'd wait until I got back to Cruz Bay to return the car to eat). Then I'd head back towards Cruz Bay the same way I came, along North Shore Road, and I'd stop to take those breathtaking pictures of Trunk, Caneel, etc. (You'll probably end up with better pictures of these since you won't be shooting into the early morning sun as it rises out of the east.)

Back in Cruz Bay there are a bunch of places to eat, have a drink, etc. within easy walking distance of the ferry dock (have a Bushwacker and Tuna Down Now! at the Beach Bar).

If you really just want to see and enjoy beautiful beaches (and not drive) I'd take a taxi to Trunk first, stay as long as you like, and if you still have time, get dropped off at Caneel so that you can go to Honeymoon on your way back towards Cruz Bay.

If you end up renting a car and would like to go to a beautiful but less populated (which will almost certainly mean less or no amenities such as chairs, snack bar, etc) let me know and I have some suggestions I could share with you.

My best advise: Decide what you want to do most, set out to do that, have a backup in case something doesn't work out, and enjoy your time there. You WILL plan to come back to do/see more.

  14. Wendy - Leinster would be the one on your list that would be the most difficult to get to, especially time-wise. I have seen tour taxis out at the Annaberg parking lot (at the head of the Leinster Bay trail) but I don't know how easy it would be to get a return one when you'd want to head back towards Cruz Bay.

There are always taxis available at Trunk and Cinnamon on cruise ship days, and Caneel Bay as well (where you can access the trail to Honeymoon).

If I were you, I'd try to get to St. John as soon as you can and go to Trunk first, since as the day goes on it will get the most crowded. Then you'd just have to decide, depending on how long you stay there, if you want to go to Cinnamon for a bit, or just spend your remaining available time to check out Honeymoon.

  15. Hi Steve,

There will be a lot of open air taxis leaving from right next to the ferry landing that will take you to the north shore beaches - mainly Hawksnest, Trunk, and Cinnamon Bays.

If you don't mind hiking a little first, you could walk to Honeymoon Beach, which will be less crowded than the others I just mentioned.

    Whatever you decide, have fun!

    Steve (also)

  16. I'm not Anne, but in case you're interested I'll gladly answer your questions here.

St John is smaller than St. Thomas, and due to the fact that about 2/3 of the island belongs to the US National Park Service, is much less developed.

It doesn't have the transportation infrastructure (airport, deep water port) that it's neighbor does, so it is much less commercial.

The sleepy little town of Cruz Bay passes for "the big city" on St. John.

There are 52 beaches, all of them different - some harder to get to than others, but each with their own unique attributes.

The island is criss-crossed with hiking trails. Some lead to the aforementioned beaches, some to breathtaking views, and some to historic ruins.

The thing that probably contributes greatly to its status as my favorite place on earth is that it is very "do it yourself" friendly. On our initial trip there, my wife and I, armed with only a guidebook, a jeep, our snorkel gear, and a sense of "whatever happens, happens", had an incredible week that ignited a passion for the place that still burns brightly!

  17. I'll second the previous opinion (which was really well thought out and written, in my opinion).

If you're a laid back type person, then taking the time to go to St. John will likely be worth it to you. If you do go, make an effort to enjoy the whole thing - you know - make the journey, not just the destination, enjoyable.

If you or someone in your party are prone to being frustrated and impatient when things aren't moving at the speed that you think they should be, then it may not be for you.

Not everyone likes St. John (though few don't find it to be beautiful), and the pace and way things are done there isn't for everyone. The decision that my wife and I made to take a fellow passenger's advice to check out St. John has been a life changer for us. From the moment we stepped off of the ferry in Cruz Bay, we just felt a vibe that we both loved, and promised to come back for a longer stay.

It took about 10 years to fulfill that promise, with two or three cruise ship visits in the intervening years, but now we've made three trips to St. John, with two more booked for this year!

  19. This was supposed to be my review, but due to weather we never made it to Playa Uvas.

The Star Princess missed Grand Cayman on 11/21 due to high winds and seas, and the same conditions persisted as we made our way to Cozumel on 11/22. Unfortunately for us, it was our ship's turn in the rotation to tender rather than dock, and a combination of a busy port and high winds and seas slowed the tender service to a crawl.

The ship gave tender priority to passengers with ship booked excursions, and even they got off to a late start. When it became obvious that we would definitely miss our scheduled dive time, and likely not even make it to Playa Uvas in time for my wife's 1:00PM massage I went to the internet cafe onboard and emailed Eduardo that we would need to cancel.

As it turned out, it was after 1:00PM when we got off of the tender in dowtown San Miguel, so I made the right call.

The next time I had a chance to check my email on the ship I already had a couple of emails from Eduardo, one acknowledging our cancellation, and a follow up detailing how the weather conditions had affected their activities (it had them scrambling, but they were able to provide most of their guests with things to do).

There was also an email from PayPal informing me that our deposit had been refunded in full!

Needless to say, we certainly plan to visit Playa Uvas every time we are able to return to Cozumel.

    Thank you Eduardo!!!
