I have decided to take my grandson on his first cruise next year. He wants to go to Alaska. As I’m not rich I’m only doing 7 Days. My question is would an inside passage give me the most bang for my buck or a regular one way from Vancouver to Anchorage. He loves spending time with me as he has Aspergers and isn’t embarrassed to be with his nana. He won’t be hiding in the room with his phone. He is a straight A student in all AP classes and deserves this

I thought I would hate reading on my iPad when I first got it. I was in the same mind frame as others who wanted "real" books. Now, three years later, I rarely pick up a real book. On the plus side, I can read in the dark if my husband is sleeping and I take 2,000 plus books with me everywhere I go. I never run out. For those who don't think you'll like an iPad, give it a try. It might take a bit to get used to but when you do you'll find it's a great choice.

I prefer my kindle as it is a bit smaller. I am a retired librarian who loves her kindle. I only read a book in paper form if it is a travel book or cookbook. I love having thousands of books to choose from.

I;m taking the exact same cruise next year. Let's hope we see some leaf changing.

Thank you all so much. This helps immensly.

My friends and I are doing the Montreal to Boston cruise next October. I know hotels sell out quickly that time of year so I'm being proactive. Can anyone suggest a hotel or an area we should look that is convenient for cruisers? We want to do the tourist thing so we are going in a day or two ahead. I have never been and have no idea where the port is located. Any help would be appreciated.:)

Well, since I live her and agree it is a fabulous city, I pick San Diego.

OMG she looks gorgeous.

Got it, TOTALLY clear on the expectations now. Like I said- He will wear pants. He will be fine. It can be intimidating to post a question if you think you'll be met with negative feedback so I especially appreciate the comments that were positive, gave advice, and wished us a good voyage! :)

Since you have your answer, for your own sanity, stop reading now! :). There will always be grumpies who have to post negative remarks.

Hey, POA1, do other places besides specialty wine shops sell wine in California? Like drug stores, groceries, etc. I suppose, even if they did, they wouldn't be the best?
Yes, unlike Canada you can get alcohol anywhere. Drugstores, grocery stores, etc. Some in the better grocery stores are quite nice.

I never get a sandwich but i would if they had french dip. Does anyone know if they do that?
-
I'm hoping to do this one next year and dragging my French husband along. He's never been to this part of Canada.

My husband would have been VERY unhappy with only having a late show option. This is a man who in the best of times is fast asleep by 10:00 p.m., usually 9:00. Years of getting up at 5:00 has made him an early to bed early to rise kind of guy. I stay up late but I prefer the early show and then chocolate cake in my cabin while in my jammies. We would have been very upset.

Still waiting for mine here in Sunny drought ridden San Diego.

They haven't that I know of. At least not the first day.

So glad you had a great cruise. I was on the repositioning cruise a week before.

My favorite Mexican port is Puerto Vallarta. It is the most "European" one. I've always felt very safe there. Maybe another time.
I remember you posting about wearing those kilts at dinner ! I think the overwheling response was "fabulous"!

Sorry you were so disappointed. I was on the Westy a week prior to you. I had wonderful service and maybe because i don't drink i didn't notice the poor service out by the pool. I did notice how poorly run the "dive in" was. I waited 15 minutes for a plain burger and fries. I could see them cooking up a storm but whoever put the orders together took his sweet time. By the time you got the burger they were dried out. Other than that great. The thermal pool was empty everytime we went and the heated loungers were always free. We were lucky I guess. Things like this do make or break an opinion.

Wow, glad I'm British/Canadian and therefore very intelligent:D Hope that comment didn't offend any other North Americans, LOL.
Of course I'm joking. My kids are American bred and born and VERY intelligent.:D Of course it could be that their mother is Canadian:rolleyes:

I am a retired elementary school librarian and do miss talking to children about their favorite books. I would love to have met your children. They look so British/Canadian and therefore very intelligent (born and bred Canadian living in San Diego now).:D

I guess sometimes even a small world is too big! Very strange as our dining table was #38. Okay, next time is a deal!
Were you at a table for 4? I saw a big table with a couple of cute little kids a few tables ahead, but they were much too young to be yours.

I know i was only on for 5 days but I'm surprised I didn't see you and your family. We were in room 4033 and also had early dining at table 40. I had been reading the posts before I got on in San Diego so i knew what you looked like. Next time.

I have no idea why the oosterdam gets bad reviews. I have been on it 3 times. Last July we took her to Alaska. I LOVE that ship. always in great shape and wonderful crew. I don't know what anyone would have to complain about.

I enlarged the photos, but I don't recognise any of those people, sorry. Were they at either of our M&Gs?
No, we got on in San Diego and spent most of our time with each other. One day I will get to a meet and greet. I'm always with a group and we seem to be enough for each other. We do share tables and such but with 4 to 6 in your group you don't need to really add to your group.:)

Thanks for all the advice. He has already decided which college he is going to, looks like it’ll be Reed in Portland
