On a side note, how do you all keep your stuff safe at the beach while in port? This trip I'll be having several beach days (not on an excursion) and expect that most of the time, the whole group will be in the water. How do you keep your things safe then? Are you always having to keep an eye on your things or is there a special "beach safe" you can buy that locks to a tree or a pole

Or something? If not maybe I need to invent one :)

    .

We keep our stuff save by not having the entire group in the water at once.

    Somebody has to stay back.

    .

same thing with valueables on the ship. don't understand people leaving ipad on the lounger for hours to save chairs.

    .

    I wouldn't do it.

Some people may call me paranoid, but I have never had anything lost or stolen.

  2. I have gone twice and used "rome in limo" twice. they are in several ports in Italy.

They have vans of 8 and now have a "shared van" option that you don't even have to get your group together on CC.

    .

if you are in positano and go down to the river, to come back up, on the left side is a staircase.......DON"T GO UP THE STAIRS. I think there are about 1000 steps with no way out........ trust me on this one, go up the hill on the right which is more a small hill with shops and restaurants.

    .

    Enjoy italy........ whatever you decide.

  3. we have them in three different colours, all different sizes. one for me, one for hubby and a black set for dirty cloths that we need to bring home to wash. you can put the cubes in the washer as well, never have put them in the drier though.

i love them. when i unpack i just unzip them and fold the lid under and just put the whole thing in the drawer. theres no need to take items out of them and keeps your things from touching the inside of drawers that have held who knows what. when your ready to leave, just rezip and your packing is done.

    easy peasy!

Discovered these years ago on CC>

Love them more then I though.

Have never left the stuff in the cubes but will do that next time.

    .

    I have a set of 5.

so usually use 3 big ones in the suitacase.

If we fly in a day early to the hotel. I have 1 cube for all the "hotel" stuff. So I know I don't need to touch the rest of the bag.

I also have 2 for the airplane

    - 1 for the " must have in the carry on " but don't really need stuff.

Like wires, extra money and paperwork that is not required until final destination.

that goes at the bottom .

Then I have a small one for all the "airplane stuff. ( ex - ereader, mp3, snacks). this I put in the seat ocket in front. When I leave the plane, I know everything is back in the cube and I don't forget anything.

    .

My daughter als loves them. My Husband does not and he does not use them.

  4. I live in Ketchikan and arrived home yesterday afternoon from vacation to learn of the crash. The search efforts actually delayed our arrival slightly. Our pilot explained there was a missing plane. When we landed it was rainy and windy, fairly typical actually, and I'd heard it had been not that great all day. I know through previous experience that tours will still leave in rainy weather in town because it can be completely different in the Mistys. I can say that many people who live here are very saddened by this news. We're a small community and news like this hits hard. I know some of the people involved with the recovery effort and it sounds like it's going to be a challenging job. Here's a fairly good article, goes into a bit more detail about the crash site: http://www.adn.com/article/20150625/nine-dead-southeast-alaska-floatplane-crash

    .

Thank you for posting. as you can read, this is touching everyone that has visited Alaska. Folks from across the globe are sending thoughts and prayers your way at this time. If you know the family of the pilot, please pass our prayers on to them. We will keep following the news.

  5. As a general rule, 6 months is the "safe" zone.

    .

I agree that you loose 6 months out of every 5 year passeport, but this is the rule in many countries.

    .

I am in Canada and ccan't go to the USA for a day trip if I don't have 6 months.

    .

Lesson learned - we spend hours planning these trips, but forget to take 30 min to read the "travel documents required" that is usually sent with our tickets.

    .

Hope this entire post saves somebody else's vacation.

  6. In my experience, these fill up rapidly as they usually only have 8-12 spots.

    .

this is how I usually work on roll calls.

    .

I sometimes organize, but if I have not done my homework yet, or am not there yet and if somebody has a good tour going, I join them.

    .

step 1 - subscribe to your roll call and get a daily email.

step2 - when somebody puts out a request, look if this is something you are interested in, then make your decision rapidly as if you are in or out.

    .

Always Trust that the organizer on CC has done the research. If it is good enough for them, then it is good enough for me.

    .

This has always served me well.

    .

    For Europe

    - Get the Rick Steves guide on med Ports - you will get lots of info & many walking tours. ( if this is something you enjoy).

    .

    - Love Rome in Limo.......... check out the website and see if this is something you are intersted in.

    .

Good luck and Enjoy your trip

  7. I have been to PR several time.

    Twice by day

And the last time with a late arrival. Nothing stayed open, I did not like it and did not feel safe.

I walked around for about 1 hr and went back to the ship.

    .

I recommend you find a tour ( private or with ship) if you want to enjoy the port.

  8. If someone were to leave tips on the bed, for example, would only the one cabin person get it? Or would it be shared between the 2 or more people that look after your room? Also, in all inclusive resorts in Caribbean countries, I often take good quality chocolates, etc and share them among the various helpful, friendly staff ( sometimes daily) Have any of you ever heard of anyone doing this on cruise ships? Would it be appreciated or do they always have "treats" of their own anyway. In the Caribbean, I have never found a staff member yet that wasn't thrilled, but I realize it's not the norm for them in those countries like it can be for some of ours. Just wondering opinions from regular cruisers :)

    .

Funny you say this. We were on a TA cruise in 2010 and it was Sept.

When we got of the ship in Sydney, NS ( your home town). we had an overnight and a rental car. So we went out and bought halloween chocolates.

We divided the box in 4 ( our 2 teams of wait staff).

By the end of dinner, 1 waiter had given a chocolate to every waiter in the room. They all came by to say thank you.

We thought that the "joy to $$ ration" was worth it.

So next day, we went out and bought another box. we also bought a huge bag of lolly pops.

We gave the box to the same waiter and gave him the job to "do it again".

As for the lollipops.......... I kept them in my day bag for the rest of the cruise and would hand them all to all the "support staff" that some people ignore ( the guy that mops at the pool, the towel hut, the gift shop....... everone).

You can feel the entire energy of the ship switch....... for $40 of candy....... I will never forget it.......... and I am sure they didn't either.

    .

But again........ if it becomes the norm, then it is not special anymore and does not get the same reaction.

  9. a) I think that the problem is the people that remove tips.

If everybody left the tips on, there would be no issue for the crew.

    .

    b) I agree that treating them as people and individuals is also very important.

    .

    c) I try to pick up after myself so the cabin steward does not have to take extra time to fold my cloths (that is my job, not theirs).

Last cruise, I forgot one day and my outfit was folded on the couch. I felt so bad I kept apologizing for the rest of the trip.

On the last day, he said "thank you for keeping the cabin clean, it makes it a lot easier and faster for us".

    .

    d) When tips are already included, then I do not add more.

    .

    e) Finally, when we have OBC that are non-refundable. I usually ask the desk if these can be rolled over to the tip pool. And most cruise lines agree.

    .

Basically, the issue here is people using the term "generous", they should say “extra’. Tips are personal and private. I heard from waiters that some of the envelopes they receive at the end are actually empty.......... the nerve.

The people that need to express how generous they are, I take with a grain of salt.

    .

Enjoy the service, and don't worry about the rest. Let your conscious be your compass and you will be ok.

  10. Look at the deck plan and be careful what is above you.

    .

Better be on deck 2 if 3 is cabins

    vs

Deck 3 if deck 4 is bars and casino.

Remember, they usually re-stock the bars onvernight.

    .

I use to not look at cabin locations, but after a few bad experiences, I now look above and below on the deck plan.

    .

But lower decks are fine. Do them all the time.

Prefer to cruise twice a year inside & low.

then once a year in a more expensive cabin.

    .

    Enjoy your last minute cruise

  11. Just like any other bill we receive, it is our responsibility to pay it "before" the dure date. these can be paid at anytime.

    .

I have a cruise booked and I just sent a note to DH earlier this week saying" remember the final payment is due before the 19th".

    .

In my case, I woek with a TA, and 10 min after I sent the note to him, she sent a note to me saying the same thing.

    .

Maybe on other cruises, you had worked with a TA and that companies policy was just to xharge your card without asking.

    .

But I agree that this is a very high penality to pay for the mistake you made.

  12. RCI needs to disallow stopping gratuities without cause. Other than "cause I don't want to". If this persists the recommended amount will go up and those of us that comply will get hit for higher charges. Enough of my money goes to those that don't pay their way now!!!

    .

I agree with this. You need a reason. And you need to have it signed off by the employee supervisor. If you didn't complain for 12 days, then how can you remove the tips. Also, if you got cold soup 1 day, that does not justify losing ALL your tips for the entire voyage.

But I think everyone reading this thread agree. We just have to keep educating our follow passengers.

  13. just back from the med cruise in June.

We used RIL in Naples, Rome & Florence.

We had also used them in 2011.

Can't go wrong with this company.

    .

Naples - We had DIEGO............ he is one of the best guides I ever had.

If you are booked, asked Jany if Diego is available.

    .

Florence - we had Laura.......also excellent.

    .

Rome - we had Mauricio for the Day. Serena for the guide at the vatican.

I had the pleasure of having Serena 2 yrs ago.

    I would recommend her.

    .

Have never had a bad day with this company. Great value for the money.

  14. It has "Urns" all over it...the decor. Nothing scary at all! I'm "back" on it on the 7th for the TA...we'll get all the kinks out of it before your Baltic cruise. ;)

Look thru this pictorial review and you'll see some of them:
