  1. We have a group of 3 couples going on the NCL Epic out of Barcelona in 3 days. One in our group reserved a table for 6 for each night (except for one night at a specialty restaurant) in the Manhattan Dining Room. Do the rest of us have to go in to our NCL accounts online and reserve that Dining Room, or does her reservation cover all of us?

It's been decades since I sailed NCL, and I am unfamiliar with how it works.

Really looking forward to our Trans-Atlantic cruise, though! :)

  2. We have taken both Carnival and private excursions and always have in the back of our heads, what if we don't get back in time.
    e

    Me, too.

In Istanbul, we had a group of about 15-20 that were on a private excursion....heading back to the ship after an amazing day, we found out how horrendous Istanbul traffic can be. I worried, but we made it in time. In fact, the ship was late in leaving because another excursion (I assume it was a Carnival excursion) was late in returning and the ship waited.

So happy they, did, too. We were on the deck, watching for the last tour buses to arrive in the port, and the sun began to set....lights began to turn on all over the hillsides and the call to prayer began to be broadcast over the loudspeakers all over the city, just as a light mist -- not quite a rain -- began to fall.

    It was magical.

  3. We have taken Amtrak -- but just from our county (about 60 miles north of Los Angeles) to San Diego....not as long a trip as you are talking about. Actually, we did that twice. I loved it. Very short drive, with no traffic, to our nearest train station, and a leisurely trip down the coast without having to fight the traffic on the freeways. The train station in San Diego is just a couple of blocks from the Holiday Inn directly across the street from where the Spirit used to dock (last time we did this was in 2009, taking the Spirit to the Mexican Riviera). Sooooo easy and convenient.

  4. The color of the water in Cozumel still amazes me... :)

    Same here.

We've been there quite a bit....including a week's stay at an all-inclusive resort there. And even then, EVERY SINGLE DAY, I would go out onto the balcony and be amazed. I've tried to explain it to people. I finally wound up saying "It is other-worldly"....

  5. Terri, I actually think your avatar is a great picture ... you seem like people I'd want to spend the afternoon with lounging by the pool and getting to know - very warm and friendly faces :)

What a sweet thing to say. Well, we'll just have to do that, some day!

We're booked on the Spirit Dec. 5th 2009 sailing! :)

  6. I thought that was a photographers background.:o That sunset is gorgeous.

I hadn't thought about that, but you're right -- it DOES sort of look like one of those backgrounds!

We were actually walking through one of those vendor areas -- you know, where there is stall after stall of the same Mexican souvenirs -- and there was this one little "alley" that led to a small deck that overlooked the coast (if the camera had been pointed the opposite way, we'd just be seeing the back of those ramshackle stands! We took the opportunity to take several photos before....it all faded away!

  7. They are in the process of building a new facility there. I was there in May and can attest to the water being that blue on the other side of the pier.

That is DEFINITELY a different dock than when we were there.

I noted on the photo (that I commented on) that there was a set of steps going down to the water....do they actually allow people to go into the water on the other side of the dock from the ship?!!??

  8. This is our view of Roatan from our balcony

We've been to Roatan, and I don't remember the dock being like that.

Not that they couldn't have built a new one, I guess, but the water doesn't look like a deep enough blue to indicate a depth necessary for a ship.

    Beautiful photo, though.

  9. My favorite of the photos that have been shared here is the one of the ice formations in Alaska! Of my own photos, it is difficult to choose one, because there are several, each for different reasons.

This of Tulum, just because I like the composition (don't remember which cruise!):

This of Katakolon, Greece (when we were on the Carnival Freedom):

And, because this one, taken in Istanbul (at sunset from the deck of the Carnival Freedom), evokes not just visual but memories of other senses, as well:

  10. Hi!

Hubby and I are booked on the Carnival Spirit Vancouver/Hawaii cruise departing this coming Sept. 24th. We have booked a night's stay at the Pan Pacific for the 23rd.

My FIL called last night and they are going on this same cruise (so it will be nice to have some time with them!), and were wondering about places to stay. We told them about our stay at the Pan Pacific, but we are getting a AAA rate, and FIL doesn't have AAA, so the cost at the PP would be more than they'd really like to pay.

Any suggestions as to other, more reasonably priced hotels that aren't too far from the port? A "good" area is important, as well as the hotel being handicap-friendly.

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies! :)

  11. Hubby and I were in the Newlywed-Not-So-Newlywed Game on the Freedom last May, mainly because we had mentioned to John Heald (the CD) that we were on the original Newlywed Game television show back in 1970.

I don't remember any of the questions from the Freedom's game, but either they were way easier or we know each other much better now than we did 38 years ago. We got the most points on the Freedom and a big fat "0" on the TV show! *L*

  12. We just returned from our 16th cruise, and our first on Elation. We booked cabin E255 in the aft section of the ship. Just one comment: If you don't like sleeping, book a cabin back there! Of all the cruises we have been on, this was the noisiest cabin ever. All the noise from the azipods pounds into the room while under way. It was like sleeping in a bass drum! We tried to switch rooms, but the ship was booked full. We made the best of it, but what an experience! Book midship or forward cabins on Elation!

I don't know what an azipod is, but I'm wondering if that is what we heard when we were on the Paradise last Labor Day weekend. We were in the very last outside cabin aft, port side, on Riviera Deck, and from the moment the engines started it was as if someone was dropping a bowling ball onto a metal deck from a height of about 10 feet. Every five seconds. Continuously. All day, all night. We also tried to switch rooms, with the same result you had. The couple in the cabin next to us said they heard it all the time, too -- and they had our cabin as a buffer!

We found out that if you are tired enough you can sleep through just about any noise!
