Anyone enlighten me on why boarding has been put back and how do we manage the huge queues?I dont have the medallion

How did you end up going with boarding? Disembarkation went fairly smoothly. We were on one of the later colour groups to get off and were off at 9:30.

  2. We are currently on the Royal princess. We haven't had any major cases of illness onboard (cruise before us did) I've seen a few other upcoming cruises have similar delayed boarding. For.our delayed boarding we dropped out luggage off at 10 then went and spent the day walking through the botanical gardens. Then they started boarding earlier than announced.

When boarding started it was efficient, barely waited around.

We just got all our disembarkation information this morning. We are one of the final groups off in Sydney and our meeting time is 9:15. If I hear anything around the ship I'll come back and post it. But from what I know it's all smooth sailing from our cruise.

  3. Currently on the Royal now. Our cruise started with delayed boarding (was stated for 2pm but started at 1:30)  due to noro on the cruise prior. But our cruise has been all smooth sailing, no notice of any illness going around, if anything since we have gotten on they have relaxed the alert level. There is also still another cruise between this one and yours. Could be deep cleaning under an abundance of caution but we didn't find out about our delay until the day before departure.

we aren't going to wellington today  because of wind. another sea day.

I was hoping he was going to say picton instead. weather looks nice outside. its like a fridge inside as usual.

That's a shame. We are a couple days behind you on the Royal. Sitting in Dunedin at the moment. It's been interesting weather for us. Dead calm across the Tasman. Made it into all the Fiords, but been freezing cold and rain started once we exited Milfred. Forecast says the temperature will drop for us tomorrow in Christchurch. From 29 today down to 14 tomorrow, so it's following us. Hoping we make it into Wellington.

  5. Quick question as I've gotten varying answers from searching. We board the Royal Princess on Wednesday at the OPT. With Princess's current policy is the check in window on our medallion app strictly enforced. They have given us a late check in window 1pm-3pm but we are staying at circular Quay with a checkout time of 10am.

I haven't sailed since 2017 so not sure on what changes have happened since then. Would they allow us to board early. I am an Elite member.

Wouldn't have thought it would have slowed her down that much. Think I have only been on a handful of cruises that had seas under 5m (guess I'm the lucky or unlucky one depending on opinions) and they were all out of the US.

My partner and I are going on her very first cruise next month, hoping I don't bring my luck and she gets a smooth cruise. Bumping around doesn't bother me but the smoother it is for her the better.

  7. Hi yes we've heard about the cyclone hope everyone is safe and did wonder if the cruise ships had stayed in port. Saw on MarineTraffic that she was heading Gladstone Aus but didn't know where she was going next. Well if it's Singapore I presume she's starting her homeward journey. We sailed many times on her when she was Ocean Village and loved her and her sister ship Pacific Jewel. We are to sail her again next year as Colombus but not the world cruise unfortunately which we'd love to do but not for a few years yet.

Thank you so much for your reply Well be asleep in a couple of hours so enjoy your day

Yep she is definitely on here way. The Auckland to Singapore is her last P&O cruise. So she will get her dry dock (possibly in Singapore) then head to her new home.

  8. On the Ovation, is there an exclusive place for breakfast and lunch for Diamond and Diamond Plus?

(Suite passengers and Pinnacles have access to Coastal Kitchen for breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Thank you.

Diamond and diamond plus have no special place to eat. Only place is their lounges, just like their other ships.

  9. Following up on bookings. Make sure you make your Northstar reservations asap. They go pretty early, as does he escape room (we couldn't get in there). Rip cord (ifly) is easier to get on but it depends on the length of your cruise (the first 5 days were fully booked while the last few were empty until a day or so before)

  10. It's like a memory game....

There's actually 2 in the pizza area - and if I remember there is also one at the hot dog at SeaPlex :)

Hahahahaha yep that's correct. They are right next to each other in there.

There are plenty all over the ship

  11. Thanks David, I was wondering what the rush was about, perhaps dodging some weather?

No weather I sight out here. You would have to ask our captain about it. As we are almost full speed. I can only go on what I can see on the ship and that is we left early and are at near full speed. Currently the seas are completely flat.

  12. Usually the Tasman crossings are two days not four.

I suspect the early departure was so she was out of the area when the end-of-long-weekend boating rush started.

Everyone I have seen has been 4 nights 3 sea days. I have done many Tasman crossings. You may need to tell our captain that as we have been at just under 22 knots since leaving Auckland.

  13. We had to be on board by 5.30 ..added there were 2 ships in that day (Noordam) ...... what was the rush to get out of Auckland by 4 ????

(* granted - Auckland does itself no favours with the tender location - it's walk walk walk and no public transport in that area)

The ship left at 4 as it has to be in Sydney on Thursday. So its a three night Tasman cruising rather then the usual four. We are currently at full speed. Just past the dawn Princess a few hours ago.

  14. So far on this cruise Ifly has been really easy to book. Northstar you need to book in early. I did it on the first day just after getting on board and I could pick anytime to do it but bookings went quick. We only booked on Ifly yesterday for Sunday.

  15. I am currently on the Ovation and so far we have made the ships maiden calls in Noumea and Mystery Island. It has been two days of good thing and bad thing. Good being the ships first visit the second being that the ship has had to make 2 helicopter evacuations in two nights. Tonight we have rushed back down the New calidonia from Mystery Island and we are currently almost stopped waiting for the helicopter.

A tip for the theatre - if you have prebooked don't line up on deck 4 to enter, we went up to deck 5 where the line was almost non existent & then walked down to deck 4 if we wanted to be seated on that level - don't just join a queue because that is what others are doing. Also sometimes a queue forms for people wanting to get in without prebooking, so make sure if you do join a queue it's the correct one. We often found alternative options on this ship to avoid queues etc that others had overlooked.

I am on the Ovation now and can not stress this enough. There are plenty of ways to get around queues. In fact I have only lined up once on board. So far this cruise my experience has been that the ship has been feeling empty at times. I don't know if the ship is far from being booked out or if it is just the way the ship is designed, but at times it is extremely easy to do things. The Theatre is a prime example. We went in on deck 5 and there was no other passengers in site. We ended up deciding to sit on deck 4 and saw the lines of people waiting there. Definitely go to deck 5 to get in.

Tender tickets and the North star on port days are the only real lines we see.

If anyone has any questions I will be online tomorrow night and will try to answer some questions. We are now done with the south Pacific and heading to NZ.

  16. Although I prefer the pizza restaurant, overall I much prefer the Sun Princess over Dawn Princess.

However, as for this cruise, I would expect this cruise to have quite an old crowd. I doubt there will be many others in kids club. For a 10 year old, without being a busy holiday cruise with other kids, I wouldn't think it a great choice. They have some craft activities, like make your own t-shirt and similar, but it's not going to be a ball of fun. It also doesn't have the shipboard activities that Carnival and RCL have, with both of those marketing more to families with children.

I have actually found Princess to have the better kids program. I always had more fun on Princess cruises, then the other lines, except P&O. The kids program is almost identical to P&O. That is from my experience and I have been regularly cruising since I was 10 (now 22). I always found the school holiday cruises to be less enjoyable as a kid, as it was always harder to do activities and I spent more time waiting and watching other kids doing activities. Whereas when there were less kids I got more time doing the activities. The only except I have had to this was on board NCL, where half the time I was the only one showing up to activities and the staff didn't bother opening up the club, so I could even go and have fun in there. So there was no kids club the entire cruise. One benefit was that when they tried to run an activity that involved a prize I got the prize by default and some of them were fairly decent (one was a wireless speaker which I got 10 years ago and the batteries that came with it still work).

  17. I haven't been on the Dawn specifically but I couldn't see it being too different from its sisters the sea and sun princess both of which I have been on. For the other passengers princess usually do get an older generation of people on board but it all depends on the cruise you take, although that only means on the older cruises there are less people in there 20s and younger. Whereas Carnival and Royal usually get a big chunk of that market. Although we have been on princess cruises when the average age is much younger then Carnival cruises we have done. So saying nursing home is a horrible term to use and could be applied to any ship if the dates and itinerary only attract older crowds. Also for activities it all depends on the cruise director. We have had good and bad ones on every ship and has no connection to the individual ship. We have had one that only did the bare bones on a princess cruise while another who had big activities going all the time. We have had the same with royal, p&o, Carnival and ncl. There really is no connection between ship and it's activities, only cruise director and activities.

As for falling apart. I wouldn't be surprised if the ship is in worse then normal condition due to the ships transfer to P&O (as it is going for a massive dry dock they will reduce repairs on things which are about to be thrown out), however that condition will not be as bad as the reviews make it out to be as at the end of the day it is still their ship and they need to make sure the passengers on board have a good time, are safe and will cruise with them again.
