  1. we were on eden last week same thing on deck wasnt too long though about 20 min

was suprised to notice no scanning of cruise cards

got a feeling regulars just stayed in their cabins

The cabin staff do a check of the cabins and public spaces.

  2. I know this one--the Aussie flag has a single star under the Union Jack!! Now, I don't know what that star is so I may lose some credit but still :)

    Did I get it right???

    ML

PS: i didn't look it up, but i had recently looked at both flags,

That is the commonwealth star. It is a seven pointed star with 6 of the points representing the 6 Australian states and the seventh represents the Territories.

The other difference between the flags is that the Australia stars are all white. While the NZ stars are red with a white border.

  3. I don't think there is any issue for the Australian flag to change. We are recognised (with the only confusion being with NZ and that is just people think their flag is ours). Even if we become a republic is shows our history. All that would be needed is a reference to our Aboriginal History, except not the Aboriginal Flag in place of the Union Jack, the colours really do not work well at all, I cringe when people put it up, the colours just don't match.

New Zealand have a reason to change flag but whether or not it is worth the effort and money, I have no idea.

  4. Nearly every regular RCI cruiser I have met all say the radiance is the best and their favourite. Perhaps it was and is losing it's favouritism.

Yea, she is usually our favourite Royal ship, but the last time we were on here it was a little disappointing, with how things had slipped in quality. Hopefully it is just because things all over the ship are being run down so close to the dry dock. So fingers crossed she is back to being herself when she comes back next season.

  5. I have been on the Radiance a fair few times and lately the ship has started to fall behind, whether it be due to budget cuts or just the condition of the ship. It has been a long time since she was refurbish and is about to go back to dry dock and said dry dock is badly needed. On some floors there are 6 elevator button sets but at times the direction you want to go will only work on one of the sets.

The buffet has been cut back as well lately with only half of it even open most of the time. The main dining room food was nice but well below previous cruises on her. If anyone choices mytime dining. Ask to be seated with Solomon. He is an amazing waiter. We have been eating at his tables for years and he really goes out of his way to make you happy.

I have my fingers crossed she goes back to the standards she used to have, as she is a lovely ship.

  6. Hope there are many more to follow.
    There definitely will be.

But inconsiderate of the Uni to put first classes on th day a Queen is in. If Roger was still Vice Cancellor I'd have had words with him.

I know how rude is it.

This next one is just after the cannon went off. Well you normally have two cruise ships in a horn battle, well yesturday Newcastle had the Queen Elizabeth have a horn battle with a cannon.

These images have been resized, if anyone wants the originals let me know. They were taken with my Galaxy S6.

  7. I managed to get some photos from the sail away. I actually got a car spot outside the city Uni campus (next to townhall) around about 5:45. I got to Honeysuckle as she started to leave. I made a run for the ferry terminal and managed to get there as she sailed by.

I will post the pictures tomorrow, as its been a log day with the first day of uni, having a date then running to catch the ship as she left. I am worn out.

  8. I too would like to know how what P&O will do, if anything, to differentiate the new ship from the other lines that have similar design.

I am strongly thinking they might be work towards a new hull artwork. It is possible that the new ship (being allocated to P&O) happened either before or after they decided to move the Aria and Eden, and plan to redesign the livery, hence why the two ships did not get repainted to the white hull design of the other ships. As they either are still working on finalising it for the new ship or want to premier it with the announcement of the new ship.

I really hope this happens as I really dislike the current complete white design. Overall I am not a big of fan of white hulls as it usually ends up looking nasty due to rust and general wear, but when there is another colour breaking up the white it usually becomes a lot less noticeable.

  9. I'm looking forward to seeing the deck plans.

Being around twice as big as anything the had/got, one would think there's room for alot more "stuff" on board...new innovations?? restaurants??

I thought they might have used the same base template as the royal/regal princess like they did with the P&O Brittania, but at 135,500 tonnes it doesn't appear to be at this stage?? (Brittania/Royal/Regal are 141,000)

It is going to be a slightly larger version of the Carnival Vista. So basically the design carnival has had since the Destiny Class. Since this ship will be the sister ship to the Costa ships and Costa ships are near identical to the Carnival ships, I don't see the main exterior being any different.

  10. Does all that explain why we don't hit the back of the plane as it travel at 500-600MPH.

You do not actually feel speed, as it does not have any force. You feel acceleration. When an aircraft is staying at a constant 500MPH, the aircraft is not accelerating, so therefore it doesn't place any forward force on the passengers.

An object will stay at its current speed unless there is a force acting on it. So if you are on a plane that doesn't accelerate and therefore doesn't put a force on the passenger, the passenger will not feel a thing.

  11. OK , The passenger was probably dramatising the situation, but I have seen similar things happen in wild seas .

Things a free to go side to side, just not up. If it goes up there are other factors at play, wont happen for object as big as a person. Well if they did, the ship would be having major issues.

  12. Sorry to rain on your parade but it can indeed happen. Its like a plane hitting turbulence.... as it falls people not buckled up go flying to the roof.. What happens is a wave will pick the ship up in the front , another at the back and then the waves move away leaving the ship sitting in mid air. What happens then? ...it drops suddenly and heavy objects such as a sofa will stay in place . Have you ever heard of oil tankers breaking their backs. Thats how it happens.

They happen because there are other accelerations at play. I plane is travelling at high speed and has the engines constantly pulling the aircraft, there are a lot more forces at play in that situation,

On ships when you move slightly off the bed you are not actually moving anywhere, it just feels like you are as the ship was going up before which caused an increased force on you, when the ship gets to the peak of the wave you start to feel like you are lifting off, but in actual fact you aren't, since the ship is now falling the ship doesn't need to hold your entire weight so you start to lift off the couch/bed, as the springs/padding are not subjected to the same force, therefore they start pushing you off them (you can think of it as you becoming heavier and lighter every few seconds). When the ship reaches the peak the force pushing it up no longer there so the ship starts to experience negative acceleration (acceleration down) this acceleration can be no greater then 9.8ms^2 since that is the max acceleration due to gravity, there are no motors pushing the ship down so it all relies on gravity. Since the ship is not falling straight down and still experiences a force from the water the ship would not experience 9.8ms^2 acceleration. In fact it wouldn't even be half that. Since the only thing that is pushing both the ship and the person down is gravity and both objects feel the same acceleration due to gravity, then when one falls the other will fall exactly along with it.

Your heavy object thing is completely false, no matter the weight an object will fall at the same rate, unless acted upon by another force. (like how a feather falls slower then a hammer because of wind resistance). In the case of inside a ship where the air is moving with the ship the air resistance can be ignored as the air is moving with the items. Therefore if the change in direction was so sudden that even a feather lifted off the ground, so would a 1 ton cement block.

What you're thinking off is the change in force not lifting off the ground. It just feels that way. This can be damaging to a persons back, as it is suddenly placed under a larger force then usual, when this happens over a period of time they eventual get a injured back.

  13. I heard an interview on RNZ last night where a passenger said his elderly mother was sitting on the settee in the cabin , the ship dropped suddenly and the next thing she knew was her head hitting the ceiling.

I call dramatisation. That is physically impossible. All items accelerate at the same rate, no matter how heavy (ignoring external elements ie air, water). The ship has a maximum acceleration of 9.8ms^2, as would she. The only way she could hit here head on the ceiling was if the ship was under going some other form of acceleration down (for example if the ship was pushing itself down) however since the ship would not of been in free fall, she would of been able to accelerate much quicker then the ship would of been accelerating and therefore she would of stayed on the ground, since the ship is the only thing stopping her from accelerating at 9.8ms^2. So the only way that could of happened was if the ship was pushed or pulled straight down, which obviously didn't happen.

  14. When I was reading the thread earlier today it reminded me of the Explorer 150 knot thread.

There was doubt expressed about the strength of those winds, but this had the Anthem captain reporting 145 knots to the passengers

I actually confirmed the talk of the 150 knot winds on Explorer. As I asked the bridge crew on the Radiance about it.

  15. Dawn princess to be "rebirthed". They must be joking. It's a wreck. What an insult.

Nope that's a completely separate ship. It is being rebranded as the Pacific Explorer next year. The other ship is in fact a brand new ship. It is not currently sailing and in fact hasn't even had its first piece of steel laid.

The Dawn Princess transfer is more of a way to remove ships from the Princess fleet, but not removing the ship from our waters since it is popular and it is one of the limit number of modern cruise ships that can easily visit destinations.

  16. One of the interesting design features with Quantum is that on entry to the buffet they have installed sinks, and you are now directed into there on entry to wash your hands. Well designed!

We were on Royal Princess in June they had two sinks for hand washing in the entrance to the buffet restaurant, they asked everyone to wash their hands. However you always get those people who who for some strange reason think that coming in contact with water or sanitizer will have a fatal effect on them. They can't all be the wicked witch of the west. :-)

Good to see that they are starting to install them on new ships. I had no idea that these actually existed on the new ships. I will get to check how it works when I am on the Ovation then, see how is works out.

  17. Having come off the Diamond a few weeks ago, I will say that I am not surprised that there was an outbreak - albeit a smallish one. There were insufficient sanitisers around the place and people disregarding the staff asking them to not enter the food area without sanitising their hands (or going through the exit area instead of the entry area where the sanitisers are).

The link between Noro and the lack of sanitisers on the ship is none existent. The hand sanitiser does not affect the noro virus. The only sure way to get rid of the Noro virus is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, before and after every meal as well as after using the bathroom. Cruise staff cannot enforce that unless they install sinks at all restaurants and force each person to use it.

Majority of the time there is zero link between the ship and noro, its all the passengers. Unless of course the ship gets trapped with the Noro for several cruises, which would usually indicate lack of cleaning of the ship, which in 99.99% of cases is not the issue.
