  1. I disagree. Our first Alaskan cruise was out of Seattle. We got up to Skagway and then came back. Is recommend it any day. We did the Inside Passage. We returned to Vancouver actually as it was the last of the season, otherwise it returns to Seattle. Some people might like a round-trip instead of a one way. You won't get to Denali on one of those. But it's a great cruise

  2. We are doing our own pre cruises tour in August before or southbound cruise. We are on RCCL. I have a while other thread on it, but the short version is flying into Anchorage on Sunday, driving to Denali in Monday, staying three nights at Denali (one day to drive into Denali on bus for a tour, another day to see other sites/a little scenic river trip/ATV/???, and then a hike on Thursday morning before we leave).

Return to Anchorage and then take train to Seward Friday morning.

So, we have our own 5 day. That feels fine for us, works with vacation, and fits the budget. And I'm going to have to spend some goodly chunks of money to get it when half as expensive as cruise line pre tour.

  3. Wowzers, My phone has not been keeping me updated on posts to this thread, and there are a lot.

I'll do my best to post some of my infomation on an attachment to this thread. I'm going away for the weekend, so I'll try for next week. (maybe Sunday night, if possible)

Who said they did the Ghan!? I have seen two TV shows that mentioned that, and it is on my bucket list. (And so, yes, I am one of the Train lovers.) Your comments are fine, and all accurate. that's the tradeoff for a train ride. But almost all of those could be applied to a cruise too. That's life.

    Happy December everyone!

  4. I can only imagine-would love to hear your final itinerary-staring to finalize ours for June[emoji41]

We made a 3 day reservation at Carlo Creek Cabins near Denali. Our plan is to fly from Chicago to Anchorage on Sunday Aug 26. (I'm hoping to get an early flight so we can arrive noonish). That way we can spend a good part of Sunday sightseeing in Anchorage.

On Monday, we'll take our rental car up to Denali, with stops along the way. Most likely Talkeetna.

Tuesday and Wednesday (28th/29th) will be in Denali area. I know one day we will be going into the Park on the bus system. Would like to hike/bike/ATV or do a scenic raft trip the other day.

We'll leave Denali on Thursday the 30th (I have a nice hike bookmarked for this day) and make our way back to Anchorage. Again, we might find someplace to stop along the way. (Of course, all this depends on the weather cooperating)

Friday 08/31 we will board the train in Anchorage and then do something, or somethings, in Seward before the cruise departs at 8pm.

We haven't even begun to discuss shore excursions, but I do want to do the zipline in Icy Point.

We'll spend Friday and Saturday in Vancouver. Planning on taking the train from Vancouver to Seattle and will catch a return flight from Seattle to Chicago late Sunday or on Monday. (Looks like those airfares w/b better than flying home from Vancouver. But if that changes, then we could fly home from Vancouver).

  5. Is this a new thing. For years we have posted to find out info since rccl cannot provide. When did this start? Thank you

The no Questions is for this thread only. It is supposed to be to leave reviews for your cabin. It is searchable (not the world's best search), but still. If you are looking for info on a specific cabin, there are other ways to check on CC, or even start your own thread.

If this were filled with questions, chats on other topics (yes, that does happen), then it would be mostly useless. So we try to leave this thread for just reviews. Thank you for your support!

  6. We are booked on a 12 day to St. Thomas, St Maartin, St Kitts, St Lucia, Antigua in March. I wish I could find out before final payment is due (Dec) what the itinerary will be so I can cancel if we want to. I know that St. Maartin is surely out. We can only afford to cruise once every few years, and I don't want to spend money on something that will not be what we wanted. I feel bad for the people living there, however I can't afford to spend money on a trip that is not worth it to us. I think lots of good deals will open up for people willing to book last minute because of people like me cancelling. :(

First of all, cruise itineraries are not guaranteed, and it says so when you book, and they can change due to all sorts of things (man overboard, medical emergency) not just hurricanes. I've only had one change and that was as were actually pulling in! I could have jumped from the back deck to the pier. Then we pulled out, never to return. (but I digress)

Two, no one here can tell you if St. Maarten is in or out for March 2018. And they won't be able to for a long time. And RCCL may not know in December when your payment is due. Repairs can take longer than expected, or shorter than expected.

Three, I guess that is why RCCL has only announced changes on cruises only through September, so far. See the attached link direct from their website, http://www.royalcaribbean.com/beforeyouboard/itineraryUpdates.do?cS=NAVBAR&pnav=3&snav=10

I have a cruise to Nassau, St Thomas and St. Kitts in February. On Allure, no less. And she has to fix her propulsion problem first too. (I wonder if they'd love to do the repairs now, but can't?) My final payment is in November. I'm not worrying about it. I'll pay and go where the ship takes me. Besides, I've already bought my plane tickets and those won't be refunded at all.

  7. On a trip to NYC we met one of our councilmen at Juniors. We even have the news article to prove it!

DD studied in Rome for several years, then comes home to do an internship (very backwards, I know). Hears her co-worker Skyping with someone. Turns out the 'someone' was one of DD's Roman friends.

Sailing primarily out of the West Coast we have run into many people: neighbors, children of friends, coworkers, relatives we want to avoid :) ,people we've previously sailed with on other lines but out of SoCal.

  8. Oh, I thought of one more!

We were on an excursion in St. Thomas. One of the guides asked where we were all from. When it was our turn, we said Wisconsin. He said he went to college in Stevens Point. I said, my sister lives there and some of my family had gone there. He asked what city we were from. We said, "Neenah", He asked if we knew Abby XXXX. And that's where it got weird. Yes, we knew Abby. She was in our daughter's class from middle school through high school. Both were in the band. (Abby was the only girl amongst the percussionists). Her mother was the president of the Girls athletic booster club and I was the vice president!

A few months later when we ran into Abby's parent's, I mentioned the name of the young man, and they said, "Oh, it was you two that met him. He told Abby he met some people from Neenah, but he didn't remember their names"

  9. This thread is all about fun. Any cruise line, any location, any which way.

Have you ever had an instance of "Boy, it's a small world, isn't it?" I've had two, one involving me directly, and one I got to watch unfold.

The first one was on our first RCI cruise on Splendour of the Seas. We went to the Love and Marriage game show (still one of my favorites) and the middle couple turned out to be from my, and my wife's hometown, Appleton WI. (We now live just south of Appleton in Neenah). The next day we saw the couple and congratulated them on their win. We talked a bit, and their daughter was attending the same private high school that I had attended.

And to top it off, on the 4th of July we went to Neenah's fireworks, and who should we see just a few feet away, but this same couple. They were sure shocked to see us!!!

The 2nd happened just last year in the Cayman's. I was on a 3rd party scuba excursion (cuz Royal didn't offer one), and the group was composed of a couple of other cruisers and some others that were staying at various resorts on the islands. Between dives, I was talking to a mother and her daughter. The daughter was going to be attending UW Madison for the summer and she wanted to find an apartment in a good neighborhood. So I put her in touch with my nephew who has lived in Madison for years. But while we were doing that, the mom was talking to another diver. It turns out he went to the same high school as her brothers (who were a few years older than her as I recall), and he even had worked at the same business as her dad and one of her brothers! He had left that place a while ago, but still remember their names.

I'm waiting for the next one.

    Now, who's next?......

  10. So, you are saying that German passengers (or German speaking passengers) get a heads up before English speaking passengers. Where is the fairness in that?

I don't know anything about Hapag Lloyd, but for the Royal Caribbean cruise to Alaska I have booked for August 2018, we were weeks to see the itinerary in March-April 2017. Some Aussies have joined the cruise and they said that they couldn't see Alaska 2018 itineraries until after May 31.

Apparently, cruise lines release itineraries to different countries at different times. Oh well.

  11. Late reply- but, I never recommend rushing to get on a ship in Seward. The area is a gem to take advantage of. I'm not on any ship here prior to 6p. Frequently I'm on Kenai Fjords boat tours, but plenty to see and do, as you have found. You have an excellent opportunity if you wish to take advantage of it. :)

Ok, well, color me unaware! I hadn't even noticed that the cruise doesn't depart until 8pm from Seward! We will definitely be doing something in Seward now! Aquarium, Kenai Fjords, downtown? Hmm what to do

  12. RCCL announced their 2018 itineraries yesterday and at 7pm I booked us for August 31 departing Seward. Now that that minor detail is done, I can really begin to focus. But first, I have a road trip to Yellowstone and some other parks this Summer. And a cruise with my DS and his wife next February.
