Love reading your trip report!  We also went a few weeks ago and booked a tour through Alaska Shore Tours that allowed time at Mendenhall (with a walk to a waterfall) and a Whale Watch (we saw a whale feeding on the shore and a different mama and baby).  There are still ways to do both- though your whale watch was spectacular!

That sounds a lot like our tour! (I’ll get to the glacier part in the next post.) I just meant some of the other companies (I know Harv and Marv and a couple others I looked at) say they include Mendenhall Glacier viewing, but it’s really just a quick look from a distance (like you see in the picture).  We also did the waterfall trail!

    May 1st - Juneau

Today was our first Alaskan Port - Juneau!  We weren’t arriving until about 1, so we took our time getting up and getting ready.  We sat out on our balcony and were rewarded with some stunning views of Alaska.

We delivered some more of our postcards and then headed to the dining room for breakfast. Overall, this was a disappointing visit to the dining room.  They were running super slow this morning.  We were never able to get refills on our drinks, we waited about an hour for our food, and when the food arrived it was cold. 😢. They were probably just understaffed as we had great service and food for dinner, but this was the last time we went outside of dinner.

On the positive side, breakfast was not a complete waste of time.  We were surprised with some views of whales playing and tail slapping behind the boat!

It got us super excited for our whale watching tour for the afternoon.  We were hoping that we would be treated to even more whales later that day.  (Spoiler alert: we were!)

After breakfast, we headed back to the room to get ready for our excursion and spend some more time on the balcony.

And then an unexpected surprise...more whales!  We heard an announcement and were able to run catch a pod of orcas swimming by the opposite side of the ship!

Before long we were pulling in to port.  We got a little delayed which made me antsy since we were using a private excursion that was supposed to start very close to our arrival time.  We almost always book our own excursions rather than going through the ship as we find we get better prices and smaller tours. And fortunately, we were the only ship in port that day, so it’s not like we were going to miss the tour - everyone on our tour was in the same boat (literally!).

A glimpse of the atrium/lobby area and one more surprise whale! 😂 🐳

We finally got off the boat about 15-20 minutes later than planned and headed to our meeting place which was at the base of the Mt. Roberts Tramway.  We were doing a tour with Juneau Whale Watch which included a whale watch, Mendenhall Glacier, and dinner at Tracy’s Crab Shack.

The bus picked us up and we drove about 20-30 minutes to the dock.  We got to see some very pretty scenery along the way and even got our first glimpses of Mendenhall.

(Side note:  several of the whale watching tours that I looked at included “seeing Mendenhall Glacier”, but upon further investigation the view was very similar to this.  And I don’t really consider that “seeing Mendenhall”.  I wanted a more up close view.  And while I know I could have booked transportation to the glacier separately, I wanted a tour that included everything all together for convenience.)

We got to the dock and were split into 2 groups/boats. On board ours we had Lance, Kevin, Christi, and Charlie.  They were great!  First we took a little boat ride out to the area where whales are usually spotted.  It took about 20 minutes to get to the area and along the way we got to see some really beautiful Alaskan views.

When we got to the first viewing area, we spotted a whale very quickly.  Christi, the naturalist, quickly identified this whale as Barnacles.  The whales are identified by their tails, which are unique.  We got to see several glimpses of Barnacles over the next 15 minutes or so before our captain decided to try another location.

Unfortunately, the second location was a total bust.  We waited a while, but saw nothing.  We wound up turning around and heading back the way we came.

I won’t lie, I was a little disappointed at this point.  I had really tried to temper my expectations. Seeing whales was my number one Alaska bucket list item.  And I had read lots of whale watching reviews.  I knew that most trips only see humpbacks and that due to the water temps, humpbacks conserve energy by not doing much.  So a few glimpses of “backs and tails” is about all you can expect.  But still....I was a little disappointed.  I was hoping to see more than one whale and for longer than 15 minutes.  But I was trying to be happy with what I had seen.  And then....things got really exciting, really fast.  We came upon a pod of humpbacks.  There were a few and Christi identified Sasha and Flame for sure.

    E76C627F-C6A5-4C2B-8854-DAA5F9A0B055.jpeg

But wait!  Flame had a newborn calf with her!!!!   Everyone on our boat was stunned, even the captains and naturalists!  Since we were the first Juneau Whale Watch trip of the season, we were the first people to ever lay eyes on this baby.  No one else had seen it.  Christi said they weren’t even sure that Flame was expecting. ❤️. The baby (not caring about energy conservation), thrilled us all by showing off and breaching multiple times near our boat.

Flame was even acting very playful and swam right up next to the boat! (And was about as long as the boat! 😱)

We spent quite a while watching this pod before we had to start heading back.  I was on a total whale high at this point!  I was so excited and my expectations had been so far surpassed!!!  But we weren’t done just yet!!!  On the way back, our captain got word about a pod of orcas that had been spotted.  Even though our tour time was pretty much over, he zipped over there and we were over the moon to be able to catch the pod of orcas.  Unlike humpbacks, orcas are much more playful and these were jumping and splashing like crazy for us!

We couldn’t stay too long as we were already over our time, but we were all just on cloud nine at this point.  Christi said that we had hit the “whale lottery” and that her whole season was made on that first trip! She only sees orcas on a couple of her trips each summer (humpbacks are much more common in the area) and to be combined with seeing a newborn humpback (and breaching, no less!).  Wow. Just wow. ❤️❤️❤️

  3. April 30 - First Day at Sea

After a good night’s sleep, we woke up ready for the day and eager for our first full day on the Carnival Legend.  We started with breakfast at the buffet.  It was okay.  The bacon was delicious, but the rest wasn’t much to write home about.  But it got the job done.  So next we went on our way exploring the ship.

This first picture was actually taken the day before, but it fits well here so...,0F41E5B2-FAE9-4EBF-BA6A-1EDAAE31734A.jpeg

After looking around for a while, it was time for our first scheduled activity - our Cruise Critic meet and mingle.  We were a little early, so we grabbed some seats and took a few photos.

Promptly at 10 we were let into the Piano Bar.  We had some brief speeches by the captain and cruise director and then it was on to the mingling.  Carnival provided some refreshments - juices and pastries. They were good, but mostly we just enjoyed meeting other cruisers.

After the meet meet and mingle, we had a few minutes before our next scheduled activity, so we hung out in this area for a few minutes.

Then we grabbed a quick drink.  I think this is the pomegranate martini.  It was delicious and strong!

Then it was time for our slot pull.  I had never participated in one, but I had heard they were lots of fun, so I was actually the one who suggested this.  Fortunately, Justin has hosted several and agreed to host this one for our group. We had about 20 participants.  Here is a (very poor) photo of our host...

And he was actually the “big winner” of the group, getting $242 on one spin!

Sadly, we never made it above our starting amount, and wound up playing it down to zero. 😔. That being said,  I actually had a lot of fun.  It was really neat working as a group and cheering each other on.  I would definitely participate again.  I am not a huge gambler though, so this is actually the only time I visited the casino on this cruise.

We did a little more ship touring after the slot pull.  And had a combination of Guy’s Burgers and the buffet for lunch.  (No photos, sorry.)

After lunch we took it easy and relaxed on our balcony.  I also believe we delivered some of our postcards.  The postcard exchange was another fun first for us.  I believe this group also had about 20 participants.  We had fun exploring the ship while we were delivering them, and we had even more fun coming back to our room to new postcards!

Here are some of the many urns we saw while delivering postcards.  I had previously read that the Carnival Legend is the “ship of a thousand urns” or something like that.  And they aren’t wrong.  😂 These definitely feature heavily in the decor.  But overall, I thought the ship was really lovely.

We knew we wanted to check out Motor City, but before that we had a date.  It was our first formal night.  I made James get dressed up and take several photos with me.  Here are the cell phone pictures of the two we bought.

And here are the choices for non-premium wines for the Cruise the Vineyard package.  I was happy to discover that you could get the 3 bottle package as I read some reports that you could only purchase the 5 bottle package on long cruises.  Since we brought 2 bottles on and didn’t eat in the dining room one night, 5 bottles (the package 3 plus our 2) was the perfect amount.

There was some kind of drink special for the night.  Ocean water or something?  It was delicious, but not super strong.  It was the same price to buy a pitcher as it was to buy 2 individual drinks, so that was an easy choice! 🍹👍

  4. April 29th - Vancouver/boarding the ship

While we would have loved to have slept in late and recovered from the jet lag and lack of the sleep from the previous two days, we only had a half day in Vancouver and we wanted to make the most of it!  With this in mind, we had booked a private tour through Viator.  This particular tour included a private guide that picks you up at your hotel, drives you wherever you want for 2 hours, and then drops you at the cruise port. I have read/been told that Vancouver is easy to do on your own, but I thought the tour would really maximize what time we had.

Our guide was picking us up at 9, so we woke early, packed our things, and walked a block from our hotel (Moda Hotel) to McDonald’s.  I don’t really like McDonald’s normally, and I really don’t like eating at chains when we are on vacation when there are so many new things to be eaten.  But it was close and we knew it would be quick and fill our bellies, so convenience won out this morning.

View of the Moda on our walk to breakfast

Neil was our tour guide and he picked us up a few minutes before 9 in his SUV.  Our luggage fit easily in the back and we were on our way.  Neil started by asking us what we wanted to see and do.  We made a couple requests and let him fill in the rest.  It seemed that he would be fine if we wanted to plan every minute, but we knew his decades of experience living there would be better than any research we had done, so we let him take the reins.

First glimpse of our home for the next week! ❤️🚢

Our first stop was Chinatown.  Neil was a great tour guide - perfect blend of history, facts, and personal anecdotes. We stopped for photos at the Millennium gate and the world’s narrowest freestanding office building.

For our final stop, Neil humored my request for a quick stop to buy wine and soda to take onboard. It just took a few minutes and with that done, we headed to Canada Place.  We were sad that our time with Neil was over, but we were excited to board the ship. I know there is much disagreement about the “perfect” time to board, and I know that delaying our boarding time would have given us more time to enjoy Vancouver.  However, I personally have trouble truly relaxing until I’m settled onboard, so an early time is my favorite.  I was pleased to have gotten an 11:30 boarding time and to see that the line for security was short and moving quite fast.  But then....we get through security only to come to a dead stop.  The US Immigration Computer system has crashed.  They have no idea when it will be back up, so they have no choice, but to put everyone in chairs in this big room to wait. And wait and wait. I don’t think we actually waited that long (maybe 30 minutes?), but it felt like ages when we didn’t know how long we would have to wait and we just wanted to be on the ship.

They finally let us start moving again, and after Customs, check in, and photos, we were finally on the ship!  It wasn’t 1:30 yet, so instead we headed up to Lido and started off our trip with some Guy’s burgers! 😋

Then it was time to check out our room.  We had booked a guaranteed balcony room for this trip, which was a steal compared to the regular price.  We were told it was a guarantee for an obstructed balcony, but our research showed the “obstruction” was really just a lifeboat below for most of these rooms.  We were also told that we may not receive our room assignment until check in. 😳. I’m not sure how I would have liked that with my type A/overplanner personality, so I’m glad ours was assigned over a month in advance.

We were assigned cabin 5235, which wound up being perfect for us.  We were close to the elevators, but not close enough for it to be noisy.  And being so close to the aft elevators/stairs was super convenient for both the MDR and buffet dining.  This was also the most spacious stateroom we’ve had in our 5 cruises! And from what I have read, this is one of the best “obstructed” views, because the lifeboat is off to one side, so you still have views down to the water on half the balcony. So overall, I was pleased with the “guaranteed balcony” experience and would do it again.

One of our bags was already there, so we started unpacking/organizing.  Soon it was time for muster.  This seemed to drag on, but finally we were dismissed.  We headed up to Serenity, where we grabbed a two person hammock and some drinks and settled in for sail away!

Sailing under Lions Gate Bridge was a very cool experience.

After sail away, we went back to the room.  One more bag was there, and the other arrived not long after, so we finished our unpacking and got everything set up the way we wanted for the next week.  All that unpacking made us hungry, so we got freshened up and headed to the dining room.  We had anytime dining for this trip which was perfect.  We are normally early eaters, but with several long port days, we didn’t want to be tied down to a certain time.

For dinner, I had the corn and poblano soup and shared rockfish fingers with James as appetizers.  For mains, I had the salmon and James had sweet and sour shrimp.  We both had melting cake for dessert.  And when we were stuffed to the gills, they surprised us by bringing out this anniversary cake and singing to us.  It was very sweet of them and everything was delicious! (But we basically had to roll out the restaurant. 😂)

  5. 4/28 - Day 2 - Travel/Seattle

We arrived in Seattle around noon, with our Amtrak reservations at 7.  So we were reduced from 24 hours in Seattle to less than 7. 😢. But we were determined to make the most of the time we had.  So we got a Lyft to Amtrak to drop our bags for optimal touring!  Some views of Seattle from our Lyft....

We made it to Amtrak and checked 2 bags, but as we were trying to check our duffel bag, the zipper exploded, so we shut it the best we could and put it in bag storage instead of checking it.  No time to waste!

We were headed to Pike Place Market, but we decided to walk the mile or so there so we could take in more of the city.

And then it was time to eat and shop our way through Pike Place Market.  I found some good pointers on Love From the Oven blog, and so we used those to figure out what we might enjoy.   Our first stop was DeLaurenti Specialty Food and Wine for some prosciutto pizza.

James was most excited about digging into some Pike Place Chowder.  The line was sooooo long.  One of the employees came out and told everyone they could order online.  Online you could only do a fixed sampler instead of choosing your selection, but that was okay with us.  It was great to bypass the line.

Final stop was Ellenos for marionberry Greek yogurt.

We took the elevator up and were rewarded with some stunning views of Seattle.  It was an absolutely beautiful day!

We made it back to the station and relaxed until it was time to check in.  Despite being able to get a hotel the night before, neither of us was able to get much sleep, so we had pretty much been up for 36 hours at this point. 😴. The Amtrak station was beautiful inside.

I’m glad I had read the tip on CruiseCritic to sit on the left side of the train as the scenery on that side was gorgeous!  At some point, we went to the dining car for sandwiches, but we mostly just relaxed and watched these views pass by. 😍

We arrived in Vancouver around 11 pm.  But we didn’t realize that we would have to stand outside in line in the dark and cold for an hour to go through customs.  Not the funnest surprise. But after 40 hours of traveling, a 2 hour drive, 2 flights, 3 shuttles, 1 Lyft, a 4 hour train, and 1 cab....we were greeted by this sight for sore eyes!

I got one...went to the spa, and then asked them how much each product on the shelf cost until I found one that was under $50.  It took a while, and I'm sure some people would be embarrassed to do that, but I wasn't.  They obviously knew exactly what I was doing, and they didn't exactly volunteer to help me...but they answered by questions, and I found a body scrub for under $50 (it was a glass jar with some sort of sugar scrub or something in it).  I think it was around $45.   Used my gift card and got it for free.  🙂

That’s the kind of thing I was hoping for with ours...to use it for a product or for an inexpensive service, but multiple people at the spa made it clear that it was only good towards the premium services.

  8. We were on the Carnival Legend week before last.  We received this $50 spa voucher as an anniversary gift.  So we went by the spa and were advised that we could ONLY use it on the premium services.  Those particular services began at $165 for a facial and were about $200 for a 50 minute massage.  There were lots of less expensive services, but the gift card couldn't be used towards those or towards products.  Needless to say, the "gift card" went right in the trash.

  9. We just got off a 7 day on the Legend.  We had 4 comedians.  2 were onboard when we got on, and halfway through those 2 got off and 2 new comedians got on.  There were a few repeats, but between the 4 comedians, there were ~ 20 UNIQUE shows.  It was awesome...plenty of chances to get my comedy fix!

It looks like you are already dressed in layers for Alaska. Weren't the temps 60-70 in Nashville? You have the face of someone not stressed at all. Nice.

Yes, I am wearing my fleece coat.  The temps were very nice in Nashville and I only wore a T-shirt and jeans, but it was chilly in the airport!  I’m glad I don’t look stressed.  I was definitely stressed and exhausted, although that eased significantly once we were actually on the flight.

  11. April 26 - Travel Day 1

We were using our Southwest points for our flights and so we were flying out of Nashville (BNA), which is about 2 hours from our home.  We always want to leave plenty of time for traffic, so we dropped the kids off at James’ parents just before 9 and we’re on the road by 9.  We made good time and made it to Nashville around 11.  This was our first time using Flight Park, so we found them, got the car parked and then caught their shuttle to the airport.  We arrived at BNA around 11:30 or so (I believe our flight was at 2:40).  We were excited...our trip was beginning!

The excitement didn’t last long.  We went to the check in kiosk and couldn’t find our reservation.  So we went to the desk only to be told our reservation was cancelled.  We were pretty unhappy that nobody had bothered to contact us, and the news from the Southwest agent continued to get worse.  There were absolutely no other flights that would get us to Seattle that day.  The soonest would be a 5 am flight the next day.  And because the NFL draft was being held in Nashville that weekend, the city was flooded with fans, meaning that the airport was likely to be crazy busy and that the chances we would find a hotel for the night were low. 😢

I’m not afraid to admit that I was pretty frustrated at this point.  The agent made it clear that we needed to be there early because of the airport traffic.  So we knew to drive back to Nashville, park again and get back to the airport, we’d need to leave home before midnight.  It just didn’t seem worth it and we knew we’d get no sleep.  So getting a hotel seemed like the best option.  Despite the draft crowds, we were able to find a hotel close to the airport.

We got the hotel to pick us up so we could avoid having to deal with picking the car back up only to have to take it back.  We knew we wanted to try to get to bed early due to the early wake up time, so we didn’t plan any big excursions.  But we did walk to a nearby Mexican restaurant for a late lunch.  Nothing like chips with salsa and queso to ease your worries!

    84BC36FB-EBCC-413E-A289-FC3A6AB0CBDF.jpeg

Our late lunch was delicious and we stocked up on a few snacks to make a light dinner in the room.  I was able to call and cancel our Seattle hotel for the night and reschedule our Space Needle time. And then we spent a few hours just relaxing and watching tv at the hotel before trying to get some shut eye about 8.  Sadly, between the early bedtime, stress of the day, and excitement about the trip, sleep did not come easily. So we were exhausted arriving at the airport at 2:45 the next morning.

But at least this flight wasn’t cancelled!  And early flights have the added benefit of beautiful sunrises!  So our adventure finally begins (almost 24 hours later than we planned)....

  12. I have only purchased FTTF once, because we were traveling with our 5 year old and 2 year old.  I knew they might grow impatient with long lines  for embarkation/debarkation.  But the number one reason was because I wanted immediate access to our room. With young children, we had lots of carry on stuff we didn’t want to lug around the ship and I knew my 2 year old would need a nap.  I will say, that if you no longer get the immediate access, it might be a deal breaker for me purchasing it again.  I know lots of people are happy just to drop things, but we actually needed to use our room for a quiet nap before muster, so it not being ready would make FTTF much less valuable to us.

  13. I don’t recommend it.  Too many things can go wrong.  Breakdown, car accident (your own or someone else’s shutting down traffic), construction, etc.  We usually travel by car and I’d say at least 25% of our trips, we experience significant delays due to one of the above.  IF I was going to drive the day of the cruise, I would plan at least double the travel time I needed.  So if it is normally a 3 hour drive, I’d leave at least 6 hours before the all aboard time (and so on).

  14. Well, we got stranded in Nashville.  Our flight got cancelled because we had a connection in Chicago. Who could have predicted a late season freak snowstorm in Chicago?  It’s almost May!  Thank goodness for flying out early....hopefully we can still make it to Vancouver by Monday.
