  1. There is a bus from Catania to Etna (to Rifugio Sapienza) but it only runs in the summer. There are two departures each day but only the earlier one would work for you. Last summer the time was 8:15 AM, arriving at 10:15 AM.

The problem is the return bus, which is likely too late for you. It departs Etna at 4:30 PM and arrives at 6:30 PM, again assuming that the times are the same as last year.

The bus departs from the piazza in front of Catania Centrale station, which is less than a mile on foot from the cruise port.

The bus company web site is here: http://www.aziendasicilianatrasporti.it/

Odds are you'll need to either rent a car and drive or hire a car and driver.

Have you tried posting on the roll call for your sailing to find others who might want to share the cost of a car service?

Thanks for the info, I will check it out. I have posted on the roll call but it seems like it is just becoming more active lately.

  2. Maybe better meal planning will help:

    B:Jimmy Deans D-lite breakfast sandwich

    L: Vegan taco salad

    snacks: apples or carrots

Not yet sure about dinner gonna have to get better at planning ahead I know it will help with making better choices!

    Enjoy your day!

  3. Happy New Years everyone!

I've been gone way too long, I got a temp job and with the holidays the days flew by. Now time to get to business. I'm thinking of joining Weight Watchers On Line. I've done well on their program before and for some reason when I pay money I seem to make much better choices...I hate to throw money away! I hate the thought of paying for something I feel I should be able to do myself but it just isn't working and maybe it will get me on the right track.

Just gotta make it, me, a priority...and remember how much better I feel when I make better choices.

Here's to a great 2012! We can do it!

  4. You always talk about the most delicious things. I need to marry a chef........thats all there is too it. I'll never make it on my own fixing food, lol.

Before I met my hubby (I was 36) my food groups consisted of pizza, ice cream, sugar and fat! Hmmm, maybe that hasn't changed enough... My hubby used to do all the cooking, and he's good at it too. Over the last couple years I have started cooking too. I'm home since I cannot find a perm job and we wanted to eat healthier. We've been eating out too much and now need to get back on track.

    Here's to a great day!

  5. Portions are so hard, you just don't know how much something is nowadays. 8oz is normal for one burger now. Its silly. I had a burger the other night and I only ate half.

We went for Italian the other night....had it for two more meals! Party cuz there's so much and partly cuz I'm watching...that's the way to get your money's worth!

  6. I've been doing much better at portion control and ordering iced tea instead of pop when we go out. Life is so much better when I limited sugar.

My pants seem to be big and am fitting into a smaller size, although I really need to get on a scale. I have 3 or 4 sizes of jeans and it's nice not being in the largest size anymore. In this house we don't have a good place to keep a scale out and convenient. I think I do better when I weigh myself more often, gonna have to figure something out.

Kim~ sorry to hear that your cruise was disappointing, glad Rick Springfield came through for you.

    Enjoy!

    ~Paula

  7. Hubby's at work and it's one of those nights that all I want to do is eat, so I thought I would write.

We bought some 100 calorie snacks to help us both with portion sizes. I'm keeping them in the basement so I have to go down there to get one. I typically won't journey down there twice in a row. Sounds silly but it seems to work.

At least I am making better choices tonight so far an apple, raisins, hamburger and now I'm thinking about a sweet potato, baked that is. Thankfully I went to the store earlier today to get some better foods in the house.

Brooke, I love PB&J sandwiches! I now use natural PB and fruit spread, neither have sugar in them so I don't feel so guilty about it...

Well, I best find something to keep me busy till I go to bed. They're predicting snow tonight, the first of the season. Not really ready for winter but I know you burn more calories when you're out in the cold!

    Have a great night!

  8. Its a new day.............a new chances.

So true! And today was much better...looking forward to even a better one tomorrow!

I picked up the kettlebells last night while watching Biggest Loser. Didn't do too much with them but better than snacking which is usually what I do.

For what it's worth, I met my hubby on the internet, long before it was the thing to do. We chatted on line and on the phone for about 6 weeks before we met in person. Our first meeting was at a baseball game, we had a good time. After the game he walked me to my car....we hugged good nite and it was very different than it had ever been before. There was a sense of calm and security, like all my worries just melted away.

Can't wait to hear about your ghost hunting...love the stuff but have never gone.

    Enjoy~

    Paula

  9. Bad day today....so I went to drown it in McDonalds.....then got upset and threw most of it out. How I wish to be someone who exercises, not eats, their emotions/boredom away.

Brooke~ Hope you have a great date!

Here's to a better day tomorrow!

    ~Paula

  10. Did 1 1/2 hours of Kinect yesterday! Gotta keep up the exercise, gotta make it fun. It came with a Zumba game, Brooke I don't know how you do it, what a workout Zumba is! And how outta shape I am. :( Even more reason I need to keep it going.

Found a new show on Food Network call Hungry Girl. I've only seen a couple of her shows so far I like some of her ideas.

So far today I've had hot apple cider and a Jimmy Dean's Delight Breakfast sandwich. Not sure what I'll have the rest of the day, wish I could plan my eating better. I'll be out running errands and probably pick up something I'd be better off without.

Hey Kim, hope you're feeling better, you're off soon! Have a super time, can't wait to hear about it!

    Enjoy~

    Paula

  11. Exercise kicked into high gear yesterday, we got an Xbox Kinect....so after moving gravel we, hubby and I (as it's just the two of us here), played games. Sure got a workout....we both were a bit sore today.

We reset the Wii Fit so we both have new starting weights and can keep track of where we are, then we played games on the Kinect. I hope this works to keep us moving especially with winter just around the corner. If we get as much snow as we have gotten rain this year we'll be spending lots of time inside, as Cleveland has set a new all time record for rain!

Food choices not good today, too much sugar....at least there's been exercise!

Hope Brooke is having a great cruise and that Rina (tropical storm) hasn't dampened things for them.

  12. Just checking in. I have been so sick this week with a bad cold. I suppose I should be grateful I am sick this week and not next, but I am not. :( The upside? I have no appetite whatsoever. So, I have lost 58 lbs.

To answer the previous poster...I am not following any special diet. I have just cut down on all portion sizes, have eliminated all soda (diet or otherwise) and fried foods. I also exercise 30-40 minutes a day.

    Kim~

I hope you get feeling better soon, better now than on vacation. I need to stop drinking pop. I don't keep it in the house anymore. I drink water and iced tea at home but when we go out I get pop.

I am such an overpacker too. I tend to pack early and then spend the last couple days taking things out of the suitcase. I get so tired of bringing things I never wear/use.

Hubby cooked turkey and mashed potatoes for dinner last night, oh so yummy! I did pretty well on portion size and didn't get more even though I wanted it cuz it tasted so good. Had leftovers for breakfast, I seem to do better all day long if I start with a good, balanced breakfast.

Tonight is dinner with hubby's company, it's always a buffet. The food is just ok so it won't be hard to load up on salad and pass on other items. Dessert is always cheesecake which I don't like so that's an easy one. It's gonna be the pop that's an issue they won't have iced tea and I don't drink alcohol, not that it would be any better than pop.

Yard work yesterday and lots more to do today. I feel like I accomplish two things at once as I consider it a workout, I'm sore the next day! ;)

Here's to a day of better choices!

    ~Paula

  13. Since Brooke is cruising today, I will be posting my weight daily. ;) No, I won't be doing that. But, I will report that I lost 57 lbs. I have been working a lot of extra hours and running around with my kids, so that has really helped. No time to eat I guess. I am still doing my bike, but increased my time/miles again. Every little bit helps.

2 weeks from today, I will be waking up in Miami ready to sail. So excited!

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Kim

Wow! 57 lbs, that's huge. Every little bit does help. I've been out in the yard on the few days that it is nice out...won't be long before the snow flies.

Two weeks to your cruise, you should be excited! Are you packed? I just got under the year mark and am excited for that milestone. And hopefully Brooke is soaking up the sunshine right now.

I need to get focused on making better choices...I know I have a year till my cruise but my step daughter is getting married in June and I'd like to be down by then. I have about 80 lbs total that I need to lose but I just got to get started moving in the right direction.

    Enjoy~

    Paula

  14. Congrats to you Brooke! It's great to hear the excitement in your posts meeting your goal and getting ready for your cruise. I can't wait to hear about it as I have more than a year to wait. Hope you have a terrific time!

And Kim, what fun for you! Nothing like a good deal on something that you'll really enjoy.

Been doing lots of yard work as it is leaf season here in Ohio. We also had to dig up our sewer line for the kitchen and replace it....hubby did the digging but I sure moved a lot of wheelbarrows full of gravel. Just kept thinking about burning calories.

Had a second interview this morning. Keeping my fingers crossed. It would sure help to have a perm job (as I've been doing temp work too long) so much easier to get in a routine and make better choices.

    ~Paula

  15. Brooke~How was walking down the red carpet? Sounds like fun!

Trish~ I agree, eat veggies, just wish I liked more of them.

I've been doing some vegan cooking and lots of vegan baking. The statistics on vegans and their lack of heart disease is amazing. I can't imagine being totally vegan but cutting back has sure made me feel better.

I do enjoy this thread and hearing what works (and what challenges) others. Brooke, you are an inspiration with your dedication to better choices and working out.

Here's to making it a great day!

    ~Paula

  16. If I want fries..........why don't I get JUST fries. There isn't any need to get the whole deal. Its a battle.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who struggles with this, it seems like such a simple concept....and yes, when emotions are attached is get so much worse.

Yeah, Kim, 3 pounds in a week! I agree Wendy's has lots of better choices for fast food. Baked potato and chili, yum! Not sure how you can ride in the car with the smell of McD's and not have any, woohoo for you!

Got on the scale yesterday, thought I needed to get a starting point. Not as bad as I thought, but lots of work to do.

    Enjoy~

    Paula

  17. Thanks for the warm welcome. It's been cold and rainy here in northeast Ohio all weekend. Drank lots of hot apple cider, sure was yummy but probably lots of calories for a drink.

Gave into Mcdonald's craving yesterday, fries and Coke, at least I sticked to small sizes, usually I get a whole meal and beat myself up for it the rest of the day. Finally, I've decided to get what I really want and not eat things I don't really want.

Really need to work on the exercise part of the equation.

    Enjoy your day!

    Paula
