  1. No upgrade to muts, as far as I can tell anyways. Heading southbound put the sun shining on the screen directly most of yesterday making it difficult to see darker scenes. Not sure if that can be rectified with a new screen but the screen itself was slightly uneven in brightness which would indicate it is the original screen installed, however it still does suit the purpose.

The Bluetooth on the TV's can get loud, I also found out how to look at your photos on devices. I'll provide a walkthrough later although it's not terribly hard to figure out for tech savvy folks.

Lots of folks wearing ocean medallion navy blue jackets walking around. Seems like the star will get it. I also noticed a new satellite "sphere" near the putting green.

I'll provide a full review on the website soon.

  2. Can anyone give me any insight good or bad in selecting the very last mini-suite aft on the port or starboard side on deck 9. I know the balcony is uncovered. Is it insanely windy or are there any other concerns?

The back cabins on the emerald deck are a bit louder from the noise of the wake...I would expect the back cabins on dolphin the same.

Not sure either, but on some of the older grand class ships, D732/D733 have different layouts..see this link at the bottom for photos...

  3. Coral, thank you so much for the upload of the summer program for 2019 here!

-Interesting to have Royal Princess on the Vancouver - Whittier runs. I'd actually thought she'd do the Seattle roundtrips.

But nice to have nearly all major cruise lines deploying one of their mega ships in Alaska in 2019: Celebrity (Solstice, Eclipse), NCL (Bliss), Princess (Royal), RCI (Ovation).

When the Crown came to the west coast to do Alaska, she was the largest ship around other than X. Her first season was the Vancouver/Whittier route, then transitioned to RT Seattle. I think whats more interesting is that there will be a 8% drop in capacity for Princess on the RT Seattle run with the Ruby and Star on the route (instead of Ruby and Crown/Emerald). Additionally, HAL and Princess seem to be doubling down on the Vancouver based ships which is really interesting considering the port capacity constraints in Vancouver without the Ballantyne pier for overloads.

  4. you wouldn't happen to be a corporate accountant?
nope, not a statistician either, but do enjoy it finding some of the hidden truths in statistics.

While I personally love the Coral, the grand class ships always seem to have a really nice ratio of amenities to passengers (well the amenities i like anyways).

  5. I'm working on a pretty massive spreadsheet comparing the features of all the ships. It's not done yet, but here are some statistics about each ship - you pick what is important to you. All passenger calcs are double occupancy based. Interesting, all ships have an "overload" factor of 1.2 - meaning that when all berths are full, there are 20% more passengers.

    • Tons per passenger (higher is better): Coral 45.8, Star 41.9, Island 41.5
    • Passengers to crew ratio (lower is better): Coral: 2.23, Star 2.36 Island: 2.46
    • Gross tons per cabin (higher is better): Coral 91.63, Star 83.96, Island 83.11
    • Passengers per elevator (lower is better): Coral: 142.8, Island: 158.1, Star: 185.4
    • Passengers per bar/drink service (lower is better): Star: 185.4, Coral: 222.2, Island 316.3
    • Passengers per pool (lower is better): Star 519.2, Coral 666.7, Island 738
    • Passengers per hottub (lower is better): Star 370.8, Coral 400, Island 442.8

  6. My parents want to do a big family cruise for their 50th Wedding Anniversary with their kids, kids’ spouses, and grandkids. If everyone goes, it will be 14 adults and 13 children. They have picked an expensive 15 day LA to Hawaii and back Christmas cruise in 2018 on the Emerald Princess. It is not my first choice, but I’ve committed to taking my family. I’ve had a lot of friends lose their parents in recent years and I want to make the most of the time I have left. They have given us lots of notice and we have been saving.

My question is with room size and configurations. My immediate family consists of myself, wife, and two daughters who will be 5 years and 18 months at the time of sailing. We don’t co-sleep with our kids. Can we all fit in a standard or ocean view room? Ideally, we want a double bed, single bed, and crib. My parents seem to think there’s way more room in an ocean view and we can fit there, but not from what I can tell on the Princess website. To me, it looks like we almost have to go for a mini-suite to be comfortable. A mini-suite versus ocean view moves the price from $7k USD to $12k USD, plus more gratuities are expected. I’m also worried about the safety of the balconies with the little girls. Is there a way to lock them up high?

I appreciate any advice experienced cruisers could provide. Thanks in advance.

Please check out my page for some tips regarding the pack and play and travelling with little kids (we've done it 3 or 4 times). A minisuite is definitely worth it just so you can use your cabin when the little one is napping. If not, know that balconies are roughly the same size as oceanview cabins. The main advantage of the balcony is that if you are next to relatives, you can use the balconies to go between rooms.

  7. I don't think Alfredo's is as popular as it might seem. Particularly on the older grand class ships. I know when went on the start in 2012 right after its dry dock, it was scheduled to get it - never did. I think it works well on the larger ships to help accommodate the dining crunch with so many passengers, but not as well on the smaller ships with smaller atrium.

    But you never know!

  8. Did anyone else get the email to vote on the name of the next ship? I'm assuming they might use the results to name Royal 5 and Royal 6 as well. While most of the names seemed a bit odd, it was nice to see the "Sky Princess" make the list. In a way I expected "Atlantic Princess" to be on there but it was not.

Anyways, curious what people think, so I added a page that allows people to vote:

  9. Has anyone arrived after 2:30 or 3? I would hope the line is shorter then. Sure its nice to get on as early as possible, but there are so many restaurants andthings to see close to Canada Place I don't understand the rush of getting there at 9:30 only to have to wait for other passengers to disembark and then wait in lines.
