  1. I just checked the picture of the PV1 on Sky. It’s exactly the same as ours. The man on the picture is standing behind floor to ceiling window

Right. The promotional materials show that version. But other people’s shots of their PVs just have the sliding glass door. Most odd ...

  2. We had PV1 6011 and we had combo - floor to ceiling window with couch next to it and the glass door. I enjoyed the view from the bed.

What ship were you on? We’ll be on the Sky. I wonder what determines which rooms have your arrangement vs. the sliding door ...

  3. Since we’re talking about PVs ... in some pictures, I see a sliding glass door. In others, I see what looks like a standard glass door plus a window. I assume there are two different “flavors” of PV? We’re going to be in 4019, and I was just curious as to which it might be. I’m rather hoping it’s the door/window combo, since that one allows you to look outside from the couch.

  4. But with Cannon you do get more bang for your buck.

I recently got the new G1X mark III and am very pleased with it. I love my big Nikon DSLR with clunky zoom but got tired of lugging it around on vacations. The little G1X III is like having a mini-DSLR in your (coat) pocket. Very freeing.

  5. We’re doing Trade Routes next month and decided against both London and Paris. We’d rather spend more time in each of those cities, especially London, and would rather fly directly to them. It’s about a 5-hour flight from our home to London; taking a lengthy bus trip just didn’t make sense to us.

We’re doing Stonehenge and Salisbury instead, since it’s truly unlikely we’ll ever get to those places again.

But that’s just us. And yes, we’re in our 50s and hope to do more travel.

Hopefully I don't sound like an agist... we don't usually go out at night dancing etc. while not vacationing and like to enjoy the nightlife/dancing while we are on a cruise ship. We hang out with however likes to do what we like to do, younger or older doesn't matter.

We were on a Great Barrier Reef cruise and the average age must have at least 70. All the bands catered to that demographic, so we ended up wherever there was a DJ playing newer stuff. We wouldn't enjoy Rat Pack and Beatles tributes (I am sure not everyone likes my musical tastes ....so nobody take offence pls.), and from what I read there aren't any DJ's

    ——

    No DJ's have been reported.

When I heard the DJs on the Celebrity,I felt like I was at a wedding reception and time to call it a night. :D I like real musicians or a live band.

Celebrity wins in your category for music venues you like.

I just wanted to point out that I didn’t write the post you responded to. I believe it was the original poster. :)

I understand people wanting to party with contemporaries and dance to music they enjoy. Based on what I’m seeing in this thread, the OP probably would be a bit happier on a different line. There are zillions of them out there. I know we looked long and hard before deciding to go with Viking for our first cruise together. (Next month! Wheee!) We aren’t enthralled by what we’ve heard about the evening entertainment, but that’s probably the least important factor to us. It’s obviously much more important to the OP.

We’re actually quite happy about the classical music apparently played throughout the ship! Perfect.

  7. Sounds like we’re on the same cruise! We signed up for the walking tour with wine and tapas. Wine, food, and a good walk — sounds like a decent combo to me.

I do agree that of all the amazing places we’ll be going, Murcia looked like the least interesting. But I’m with dln929; it’s all new and different to us. Watch Murcia surprise us and end up being a major highlight!

  8. Sounds wonderful! Thank you so much for bringing our ship over for our cruise out of Barcelona next month. [emoji51]

About those waves ... are you sure you meant 12 meters (almost 40 feet) and not 12 feet? I believe 12-meter waves are very rare. One was recorded on the North Sea in 2015 ...

I’ll look forward to hearing your ongoing impressions.

  9. Not on the Sun, but last year in Manila we arranged for a private tour that took in the American Cemetery, the Rizal Shrine, and more ... a variation of what we did privately was offered by Oceania as well. This link will provide more details about what we did: http://2totravelrtw180.blogspot.com/2017/03/day-80-manila-luzon-philippines.html. The two mentioned here were also on offer by O.

Well written and interesting! Great photos, too. Thanks for sharing that!

I was wondering what sites one would show tourists in Manila, having spent a good bit of time in that city back in the 80s. I didn’t know about any of the sites you visited. In your photos, the city itself looks much more built up (and prosperous) than I remember.

Sounds like a lot (most?) of Viking’s staff are Filipino?

  10. On the Sky last year after Lisbon we missed Porto...really rough seas. We don't get seasick, but our cabin stewards were. And the lady at dinner next to us in the World Cafe threw up in the aisle (the hazmat team was there within 5 minutes to clean it up). The cabin stewards took anything glass in the cabin (glasses, etc) and put them away. All of the shows were canceled. Hubby asked for ginger ale at the World Cafe and they gave him several bottles to go. When the gal in the World Cafe was trying to pour my wine the ship was moving so much she was just hanging on saying...this is OK..this happens...nothing to worry about. I poured my own. Poor thing, she was scared. My only fear was falling. The ship handled it very well, I thought, but walking in the hallways you just had to be sure to go with the waves, and hang on when you could. I sat in the Explorer Lounge in the afternoon and just enjoyed looking out...but it was kind of empty. Remember that it is a small ship, you are going to feel the motion more. But even with the ker PLUNK and back and forth I was never scared or sick. They did empty all of the pools for several days. I kept going down to the spa expecting it to be full again! All of the shows were canceled as well, as was the entertainer in the atrium.

I hope I have your fortitude if we encounter water as rough as that on our upcoming cruise on Sky (which also includes Porto, hopefully). On the one sort-of cruise I’ve been on, I hardly felt the ship move at all, so I have no idea what it would be like to encounter truly rough seas. Knowing myself, I’d probably be stuck in the bathroom, imagining scenes from the Titanic.

  11. My understanding with PV and above is that you can request something different from what comes standard with the room. For example, you could ask for 2 Beefeaters and no Dewar’s, something like that. Unfortunately I doubt they have mini-bottles of Highland Park 18-year ...

    • Thanks 1
  12.

Perhaps if VO mounted these TV's on an arm (rather than directly on the wall) it might not be so noticeable. This would make it easier to view the TV from sofa as well! FWIW, we were in a PV on Deck 4.

Uh-oh. That’s where we’ll be. (On Viking Sky.)

If the soundproofing is that bad, I really hope we get neighbors who keep their TV watching down to a minimum.

I remember a thread somewhere in which the poster said they reported a loud TV to Viking, and Viking gave headsets to their neighbors (who did indeed have the TV cranked up due to hearing issues).

  13. Well yes, but only because you aren't going to palm tree/flamingo country. You need something Mediterranean and trade route-y? Maybe a three masted schooner or the like?

    Good point.

I know — in honor of Viking inexplicably cancelling the Alhambra excursion, I’ll put up a giant poster of that palace and drape it with black crepe paper. [emoji48]

  14. This post reminds me of a certain party of four who were on our morning tour one day. They made pests of themselves by asking at every opportunity if they tour was going to end on time because they had a tight schedule due to booking an afternoon tour. They were so annoying!

Oh, good. I’ll be sure to do the same. [emoji12]

  15. Here’s a boring question: I understand Viking provides free laundry rooms, which is great. Do their laundry machines allow you to select a cold-water-only option? Or do they just have a single automated temperature?

I wash most items in cold water only, so knowing the answer to this will help me know how much to pack.
