We peaked in late July/early August and our death rate is at 66 per 100,000

Lots to unpack in your post! What vaccine have you had? Have you been part of a test group?

True, Florida numbers are lower than they were some time ago when they are horrendously scary. Today Florida had over 1900 new cases. More importantly, Florida has about 370,000 active cases.

Plus it won't only be Floridians on your ship!

Here in Toronto, Canada, we are worried that we are moving into the second wave.

This is just what I was looking for! Thank you so much for providing real world examples, as it helps me calibrate. I quite enjoy Commander's Palace so this is very encouraging. I've just been burned before by cruise marketing regarding food so am a bit wary. Thanks again!

Can you tell us which cruise lines / ships you have tried?

The Cruise Lines International Association has decided to wait until November for cruising again.

Here is the list of members - https://cruising.org/en/cruise-lines

And the August 5, 2020 press release.

It is US cruises. Canadian cruises are still off limits too, because of Canadian government regulations.

Well, we certainly have been careful. We hadn't seen our family between March 8 and June 27, even though they are an hour away. But then we were allowed social circles of 10 - and monogamous circles! No one could be in more than one circle.

My city, Toronto and surrounding area ( about 7 million) were held back a couple of weeks reopening restaurant patios. Not that we have been yet. Too cautious and want to wait until things are working smoothly.

Even our Conservative premier (like state governor, I guess) has been listening to the public health officials - mostly.

Many of our areas have adopted compulsory masks, but no penalty for the customer who refuses. The Conservative premier of Alberta has said it is people's civic duty to wear a mask!

I don't know anyone here who has had COVID-19 but my daughter got tested on Saturday morning. Negative. Must be a virulent summer hay fever or similar.

I am waiting for the Canada-wide app based on the Apple / Google base. There is one in the works. Not sure how many people will load it, but I will. I can only hope that if I do come into contact with someone, they will be civic-minded enough to have loaded it on theirs!

One of our Public Health officials, Bonnie Henry, (actually for British Columbia) has become an icon for her caring, careful, thoughtful and science-based reports to the public.

I should say the mask rule in Ontario is municipal, not provincial. And there are some protests about it. A minority though, I believe.

Here's a damning article from today's Washington Post.  The headline contrasts the dismal U.S. response to the pandemic with the much more successful Canadian response.

  6. A COVID-19 test is a snapshot in time. You don't have it today but get it tomorrow. The tests will tell you if you are positive or not. And newer faster testing as you board the ship could be useful. But not a "passport" or a test that is a few days old.

I thought I'd read here that O's air comes from the outside.  ?

In the dining room and staterooms. (I rarely have a veranda.)

I just found this - and have seen other media stories about it:

"Cruise ships hit by coronavirus outbreaks have quickly found themselves with no ports for thousands of passengers as countries on four continents have quarantined vessels or kept them at sea for days.

Keeping all the passengers on board instead of letting them disembark on land is a strategy that can backfire, however, according to experts, because the ventilation systems and close quarters of cruise ships make them ideal places for illness to jump from one person to the next.

“They’re not designed as quarantine facilities, to put it mildly,” said Don Milton, an epidemiologist with the University of Maryland."

  8. I guess it is too early to consider when it will be safe to cruise again. Has Oceania done anything with air quality on board? Are any cruise lines suggesting age restrictions?  This was suggested early on by some cruise lines.

But things won't open up very much until we get down to less than 200 new cases per day in our province of Ontario. Numbers are going in the right direction, but still need to respect physical distancing (no closer than 2 metres and only with our household) on our walks.

BTW, the population of Ontario is just under 15 million. And today we had 294 new cases.

  11. In downtown Toronto, Canada. Schools closed since the start of March break (March 12) and we have been hunkered down since then. A provincial state of emergency was declared on March 17th.

Only food stores, pharmacies and take-out food are open. Hardware stores were closed until yesterday (except curbside pickup). The border between Canada and the US is closed, by mutual agreement, except for truckers, those who work in the other country, etc.) The government had asked people to come home and coordinated flights to get people home. I was amazed at the number who live outside Canada! Anyone returning to Canada has to self-quarantine for 2 weeks. And they must have a plan for groceries, etc.

Those of us not under self-quarantine (the vast majority) are staying home except for groceries, etc. and a walk in the neighbourhood. We are ordering online mostly. People are finding creative ways to offer goods and services. An online wine website has organized wine sales from wine distributers who usually sell to restaurants. We have ordered our 2nd box of twelve. There is a farm that offers wonderful produce and they are delivering a weekly box of fruit and veggies, in cooperation with a greenhouse grower. Yesterday we got our first lot, including green garlic,  tomatoes, rhubarb! And we ordered meat from our organic farmer, anticipating that there may be shortages in the future.

Can't see my kids and grandkids, except on FaceTime and online gaming. Lots of contacts with family - by phone, email, chat.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Non-essential retail stores can open for curbside pickup tomorrow but likely it won't affect me. But things won't open up very much until we get down to less than 200 new cases per day in our province of Ontario. Numbers are going in the right direction, but still need to respect physical distancing (no closer than 2 metres and only with our household) on our walks.

And recalling all the wonderful places we have been on cruises and other modes of travel!

In British Columbia - Home Depot has been open the whole time not just curb side pickup.  I know this for a fact.

Sorry, I meant here in Ontario, Canada. We Very few things have been open. A few anomalies - Costco and Walmart because they also sell food.

Do you believe there may be even a tiny difference of shopping options in or around Vancouver as opposed to very rural Cape Breton Island?

Not sure where this is going but everything but supermarkets, pharmacies are closed down. Home Depot has had curb side pickup only. Finally hardware stores reopen next week. I live in downtown Toronto and I haven’t been anywhere except a short walk since March9 or so.
There must be a light at the end of the tunnel!

  14. CC says: Canada: All Canadian ports are closed to cruise ships with more than 500 passengers through July 1, 2020. Arctic ports are closed for the entire season. Foreign nationals from all countries are barred from entering Canada. In addition, Canada has extended restrictions on any Canadian cruise ship from mooring, navigating, or transiting in Canadian Arctic waters (including Nunatsiavut, Nunavik and the Labrador Coast) until November 1, 2020.

Slightly confused. We're doing our first cruise to the area - Southern Australia/New Zealand/Aukland - and I thought you used a Myki card rather than an Opal card. We are sailing out of Melbourne. We do 6 days, 13 days, and 14 days with a return to Melbourne each time. We're total noobs to this part of the world so in need of information.

Opal is for Sydney and New South Wales. Myki is for Melbourne area and Victoria . Auckland has a different one again. AT Hop

  16. The end of cruise review was online only - and open only for a few of the last busy days of the cruise.

I missed out on an opportunity to give feedback. My fault, I know.

    It was online only.

I wish I could give them comments. Any suggestions? I just did an online chat with O through my account but of course, they just sell cruises. And he said it wasn't possible to do it when I was off the ship.

BTW, I was happy with the cruise, crew, itinerary, etc. Itinerary - Sydney to Auckland.
