  1. We've had some very good & some horrid experiences. We really prefer to dine alone since we spend the rest of the year talking to our guests (travel industry), so we cherish our time alone. When we have requested a table for 2, either it doesn't happen or the table is only 3 inches away from the next table, it is awkward. MTD was a disorganized mess & wait staff was so slammed they were not able to give good service. But nothing is worse than sitting with a jerk...I work too hard all year to have my meals spoiled. We always check the location of the table but you can't pre-screen your table- mates😫! Last cruise, we had a table for 6...one couple showed up only twice...good thing...the guy was a red-necked bigot & treated the wait staff like they were morons. I found myself spending the entire meal fuming & overcompensating with the staff. We always dine at all the specialty restaurants, but on the last cruise, The Explorer only had Portofino. Hope ships get refitted with more tables for 2.

  2. I wouldn't count on it...if customs holds them up, you will be a wreck. We made a 10:00 flight once by doing express but I worried about it all week. I'd rather take my time & relax at the airport. The lines for security at airport can also hold you up.

  3. If you are Diamond on RCI, you will be Elite on Celebrity so you might want to look into that line. Celebrity has some pretty good perks for Elite. I think over all their line is a small notch better than Royal.

NCL can be "dicey." I've had good cruises with them and some not so good. They seemed to nickle and dime more than the other lines but, lately, the other lines have caught up with them (lol). I haven't been on one of their ships for five years. Their prices are lower.

We've done Princess a couple of times and I liked them as much as Royal. HAL's ships are more "elegant" in my opinion but they do seem to have older passengers and pretty much closed down after the late show.

Carnival is Carnival. More party hearty passengers but I found things I liked about them better than Royal. I once made up a list of Carnival Magic vs. Royal Voyager Class. My like list for Carnival was longer than Royal believe it or not. However, some were pretty nit picky like butter not in foil wrappers and more fruit juice options for breakfast but others were definite plus like not having to pay grats up front for MTD, amenities in the bathroom, and being able to bring on wine (before Royal let you do it).

We are Diamond so we gave Celebrity a try since we were Elite. Service was horrible, ship was beautiful, food was good. The captain playing volleyball in the pool didn't give me a warm, fuzzy feeling!

  4. I like the larger ships with the promenade...it makes more of a central gathering place for events & gives you another place to hang out in the event of bad weather.

We have found that the smaller ships that go on longer itineraries have a tendency to have a much older crowd. The shows were also geared to a much older crowd...movie night?!
