the sigma lens your interested in is a good lens. if its in your budget then go for it. but if you can, i say the sigma 10-20 f3.5, much better lens for night shots. less blurry pics..
7 more days and we will be in sunny FLL

mr.jdm,I love your photos on the Oasis.Just got off the Allure 2 weeks ago and my little cannon powershot sx120is did not due her justice. My
question for you is since I know nothing about cameras or the language-
but want a camera to capture the beauty of the my cruises and the cannon t1i seems probably out of my league and too complicated for me
to try to use-do you have a suggestion of what camera I can upgrade to for better pictures?Thank you in advance.
the only way to get a really high quality pic is to use a DSLR camera. point and shoot camera will no where be close to it. also it requires some post processing in photoshop since the pictures were in raw format, then convert to a normal jpg file.
Fantastic review and your photos are amazing!! I really enjoyed reading this review!! Great Job!!Thank you :D should have another report by december :)

Another suggestion for wide angle lens, Tokina 11-16 f2.8, they are all priced only few dollars difference. or even the sigma wide f3.5 version. it will come handy for indoor shots specially if you do not want to use flash. just bump the iso and you can shoot hand held with out the need of using a tripod or resting the camera somewhere for a longer shutter speed. I do also use a Gorilla pod, one of those flexible wrap it around something tripod. its cheap and pretty handy. if you saw the moon picture i did on this report. i used that placed the camera on the railing wrapped it around to be a bit stable.
anyways here's the link to our other cruise pic

good news fiance will upload our emerlad princess cruise (eastern carib), mariner of the seas (mexican riviera) pictures later. will send you the link. but i didnt start using the t1i until mariner of the seas, i had the canon 350d XT when we went on the princess cruise also back then my lens we were using was a canon 17-85is. good lens for travel but it wasn't as sharp as how i wanted the pictures to be

since we have the same camera. go on your settings and find the AEB bracket setting.. it will automatically shoot 3 different exposures for HDR use. 1 very under exposed, 1 over exposed and 1 normal exposure. then take those 3 pictures, load and merge them in photomatix. will make life alot easier. I honestly dont know what tips you need for keeping track of pictures. as for as that is the best part of going thru the pictures without being labelled. it will bring back memories on how a 7 day cruise goes by super fast. ahhaa. I will have to ask my fiance as she's the one doing the write up and keeping the pictures. i just do all the tidious work of creaiting shots and post processing.
for lens it depends how or what kind of style picture you take. for me i prefer the wide angle that's why i got a sigma 10-20f3.5. if you want something a little bit all around look into the sigma 17-55 2.8 pretty sharp lens and can handle low light shooting with its fast aperature. i prefer sigma i like the colors and cost is cheaper than buying canon. prime lens is good for portraits, well for me i use it for the food pictures, get a nice close up to show its detail and have a nice bokeh with it as well.
hope you do a trip report for your upcoming cruises. our panama canal (HAL) cruise ended up being our engagement celebration cruise. just need 1 more rci crusie then we will be switching over to try celebrity
-
hey, thank you so much. for lens i say get something that is constant f2.8 aperature which will help for indoor/low light shootings. so far i've been using 10-20 f3.5 and 30mm f1.4 as my go-to lens for cruise. i do have the 18-55 and 55-250 that came with the camera. but i rarely use it, camera bag gets too heavy with 4 lens to lug around for a cruise. as for post processing... im using adobe lightroom and photomatix for hdr picture and i dont keep tracks of the file names. the picture are always shot in order from boarding day to the last day of the cruise. so its easy to remember. follow me on my next trip report should be up by december. im leaving in 14days. panama canal :D

thank you for trying to help. maybe other restaurant that have thanksgiving special. we decided to rent a car for that weekend so we are pretty "mobile" :)

awesome review!! more more more!!
also do you remember how to get to that spot where you watched the oasis sailaway?
did you park at the residential neighbourhood? or closer to sheraton beach hotel?

Enjoyed your pics jdm. When I was showing my mother before we went on Oasis, she said "Did he have time to do anything else besides take pictures?" LOL! I sure hope you had a chance to enjoy the ship. I got so involved in having fun that I didn't take many of the pics that I meant to take.
Thank you, Of course we had tons of fun. as photography and creating shots is already just as fun. basically everytime we left the room. camera was there with us every minute. If we had nothing to do we would always walk the ship top to bottom front to back. gotta burn off the windjammer food....thats how i was able to get some pictures with close to no person on the background.. worse day to take pics is the embarkation day, the only time you will feel the ship crowded.
JDM....Great Pictures and report. I won't be on Oasis til January 2012, so looking forward to it. Secret spot deck 11 is it Port or Starboard, or both?yes i beleive it was deck 11 and deck 14. yes you can go both side. we just chose the left side as its the smoking side of the ship/

RCI should pay you a commission. We were set to go another direction for vacation this year, but based on the photos in your thread...well just check out our signature. Thanks!
enjoy the allure she's a beautiful ship. take lots of pictures :)

Thank you everyone for the kind words. Even for us looking back at this trip report... Wee need to cruise again!

July 30, 2011 (Day 2) –Vancouver Downtown
I forgot to mention that we rented a Nissan Versa hatchback for $183 (8 days) from Hertz. Surprisingly, that little baby could fit all our luggage (3 big suitcases, 3 small suitcases & 3 backpacks) and it could still seat 4 adults. Good job, Nissan!
We decided to explore downtown using the new Canada Line of the Skytrain that connects downtown Vancouver and the airport/Richmond. Instead of paying for 2 zones, we only needed to pay for 1 zone on weekends. It’s important that you have exact fare in coins as sometimes the machines could not give you change or take any bills. It took less than 25 minutes to go from Aberdeen (in Richmond) to Waterfront where the cruise terminal (Canada Place) is.
A Princess cruiseship was docked there when we were there. On the other side of the dock there was a Holland American one. Seeing them made me REALLY want to go on the Alaskan cruise…can’t wait!!
Walked along the Sea Wall and saw the Olympic Cauldron overlooking Coal Harbour.
WOW small world! the picture you have with the nissan versa. I live in the same complex!
loving your alaska trip review by the way

thank you everyone. we just actually booked our next cruise today. means another fun filled picture loaded trip report. :)
as for pictures on shows. they just said no flash photography and video recording. only time we weren't allowed to take pictures or anything was for the hairspray show.
need another cruise to get over this cruise :)

Omg i am inlove with all your pictures. I'm going on the Oasis in three weeks and am looking for a good camera that already comes with a really good sharp lens so we don't have to buy extras. What do you recommend? Ranging from $500-800?
I'm a Canon user myself. So I have always used Canons from 300d,xt, now the t1i. Shop around I know you can get an XS or XSI for even T1i or T2i when it goes on sale. Difference if you want video go with T1i at least its the cheapest model.
As for lens there are tons just depends how your style of shooting, like for myself i prefer wide angle shots. So I mainly use wide angle. Prime lens for low light shooting.
Once again thank you everyone !! :)

I'm just a photographer by hobby. 4 years ago bought myself a DSLR camera. just spent countless hours reading up online. going out each night to take pictures when the weather is nice. reading up and learning about post processing. voila! haha
thank you for the warm compliments
-
I really think RCI should hire you to do pictures for their brochures. Your pic's are the very best I've seen!! :D
I really thought Oasis and Allure were bigger than I wanted to cruise on but after seeing your review and some other great reviews, I think I'm going to have to reconsider. I think I'll go look at sailings right now. :D
Thank you again for all the time and energy and effort carrying that camera around! We really do appreciate the review.
E-Beth
thank you very much... oh wouldn't that be sweet if they hired me.. free cruises! wont be complaining much ahhahah! you should really try the oasis class ship, well at least once anyways. we enjoyed it specially the shows.
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT Review and Pictures!!! Thank you so much for sharing your trip. In your opinion, did you think the cabanna on Labadee was worth it? How much was it? Again thank you for an excellent review. Wandawe thought the cabanas were worth the money. $150 for the cheapest beachside cabana. you get the best beach in labadee, unlimited water since it was hot. butler guy, golf cart service floating mats.. and the upgraded lunch.. you can see the lunch food served on my trip report.
-
deck 11 all the way to the back. you will see glass door on each side that looks like a balcony with few loungers there. deck 13 has it as well. not alot of people go there :)
-
be warned... you will be wow'ed! hehe :) as for the shows, we booked one each night. only regret was, hairspray was the longest show went past midnight for us. bleh... i say book all the show to experience everything. oasis of dreams you can watch from aquatheater or like what we did. deck 14 aft made it seem like a somewhat private balcony.
chocolate breakfast it goes along with the character breakfast. and that was early, for us anways. 7am ish? and the characters do go to each table one by one for pictures.
-
nice picture.. maybe one day i will upgrade to full frame slr camera hehe
-
i just googled the Tamron 90mm macro.. man that thing is huge. but i think that would be just as good lens for food pics.. so you can show every single bit of detail to make our mouth water.
I wish RCI would take me as their photographer. that means free cruises!! haha
-
look into the Canon G10 or G11. if you want a smaller size camera. it has the manual functions like a DSLR camera plus it can shoot in raw format.
but for that price you can already get into an entry level canon DSLR camera.. but that will just ask for an upgraded lens. as i think for dslr camera. its all about the lens that will produce quality and sharp pictures

Yes getting excited already but have not started the packing yet. We will be there on sunday pre-cruise and 2 days after our cruise ends. Nov 25-27? been checking the weather and we get to have another summer in florida. will be going with my fiance to celebrate our engagement :)
by the way went on ebay and picked up a pop-up flash diffuser for $3. hehe. got a new toy to play around. should help give better detail on food pics :)
we paid $175 the cheapest cabana. we just saw the message on the night leaving FLL. so had to act fast to score our cabana, well worth it IMO
and thank you for taking the time to read our trip report. come follow our next trip report on HAL board. should be up and posted early december :)
