  1. I would love to bring home some olive oil, but worry about getting it home in my packed luggage in tact. Any suggestions on how to keep the bottles safe? I did bring home a bottle of wine from Greece last trip - wrapped it in our dirty clothes as I did not expect to be doing this (received the bottle of wine as a gift after we bought a ring in Mykonos). I suppose I could try to bring some bubble wrap with me?

We always bring sheets of cut bubble wrap and large ziplocks with us. After utilizing that, we put the wine (or other glass bottle) in hubby's sport socks for cushioning. We haven't lost anything to breakage yet-only a fridge magnet that we had forgotten about in my carryon. Hope this helps.

  2. I usually go into small grocery stores. Tins of tea from London. Tubes of tomato paste from Roma. Balsamic vinegar and olive oil - Umbria.

You can find a lot of interesting inexpensive gifts too.

That is one of our favorite things to do whether a small grocery store or a "hypermarket." You then have momentos that last a few months and bring back memories. The British goods are the most fun, but we enjoy food items from everywhere we go. People think we are nuts. I would swear that the olive oil from Barcelona tasted much better than what I could buy here. It's all good.

Thanks for the cameo advice everyone. I hope to check them out on our October cruise. i just didn't know what to expect to spend. We usually stick to food and wine-its just cheaper!

  3. travl2day,

I bought a beautiful cameo pendant and earrings at the Cameo factory right outside of Naples. It was very interesting to watch them carve the cameos. We really didn't pay much more than what we saw in the stores and we knew we were getting the real thing. There are many manufactured ones out there, not hand carved.

We will be going there in October. Were the cameos very expensive?

  4. Does anyone remember the small cruise ship Ariadne? I am sure she ended up with the shpbreakers in India. I sailed on her with my parents and brother 40 years ago from Florida to Cozumel, when Cozumel was a sleepy little town with dirt roads. We had to tender in and we had to climb down steep stairs from the side of the ship. I remember that the library/lounge had wood paneling and she was quite elegant. I saw her again some years later in drydock in Port Everglades, Florida. More like a yacht on steroids than a cruise ship. Quite the adventure for a teenager.

  5. We sailed on her in 1974 for our honeymoon. We had an ocean view cabin and we were placed at a table for 4 with another honeymoon couple. It was a gift from my parents for not having a large wedding. We sure enjoyed her. I had gone on her sister ship, the NCL Skyward previously with my parents. Does anyone know what happened to her?
