  1. I can't believe how many people undermine the integrity of the drill by showing up to the muster station early.

They warn you as a courtesy before the drill so that you are not otherwise occupied (e.g. bed, shower).

When the alarm sounds, you should proceed to the muster station. As part of this process, the crew can identify bottlenecks that they can improve upon in the event of a real alarm. Having half the passengers show up early kind of defeats the purpose of the drill. If they wanted you to muster at 1600 only to make sure you know where your muster station is and to pass on information, they wouldn't call it a drill.

Also, you better not complain about the person taking a smoke break in one of their few designated smoke areas because you decided to preempt the concept of the drill and hang around their smoke area before the drill.
  2. Anyone care to speculate on a name? I'm personally liking Vantage of the Seas, but I'm a prairie boy so what do I know about naming ships?

The trademark applications to Pulse, Passion, and Ovation of the Seas went abandoned on January 13, 2014, and the trademark application for Vantage of the Seas went abandoned on September 9, 2013.

A new trademark application can be filed. Freedom of the Seas first application went abandoned in 2002, but was refiled 2+ years later. However, many of the abandoned application names are never used (e.g., Endeavor, Journey, and Traveller of the Seas).

It seems that Pulse, Passion, Ovation, or Vantage are not going to be the name if the name is selected soon (otherwise they wouldn't have abandoned the applications). However, if the name is selected later they could reapply for any of the abandoned names or come up with new names.

  3. Gotta love that picture entitled "Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, Canada". It is neither the Bay of Fundy nor in New Brunswick. At least they got Canada correct. Apparently the ad team is taking clues from the team that composes the geography questions for RCI Trivia.

    Thom

PS A gold star to the first to correctly identify the location. [it has been 38 years since I've been there, but I did recognize it, and I found the stock picture correctly identified the very first place I looked].

Nice picture of The Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia.

They were close. At least there is water in the picture.

  4. I know they are talking about a thorough cleaning of the ship, but I sure hope they do a thorough cleaning in the cruise terminal in Bayonne too. Wouldn't make sense to do one without doing the other. People could have gotten the illness in the terminal and not on the ship itself, then spread it once on board.

    Gwen :)

And the buses that take you from the terminal to the ship.

  5. I was just wondering what are the chances or possibilities of new Oasis / Allure / Oasis III itineraries in the next 3 - 5 years? I know the ships can only go where they fit and RCI won't do tendering off the ships, so they are limited to ports of call, but are there any ports now working on solutions to accommodate these ships?

What are some itineraries you'd like to see? If there was a 7 or 8 day to Bermuda from Florida on an Oasis-class ship I'd be the first to sign up. (Or, any RCI 7 or 8 day to Bermuda from Florida. Or...anyone really).

Maybe reach further into the South Caribbean?

What's on the horizon; can't run the same itinerary over and over and over forever...or can they?

I think they can do the same itineraries (7-night cruises alternating eastern and western caribbean with two ships (one saturday and one sunday)) for at least another 5 to 10 years.

The big change will be Oasis III taking Oasis spot. Perhaps they'll drop Nassau and have both runs go to Labadee first, then go either east or west. But otherwise, pretty much the same.

The question is where does Oasis go. My speculation is that it will do European runs in the summer (Barcelona, Civitavecchia, Naples, Malaga), then come back to Fort Lauderdale for the winter. The winter schedule will be 2 10-nights followed by an 8-night from terminal 18 (you can avoid saturday and sunday with a 10-10-8 schedule). The ports will be the some of the same, but it will also go further south in the caribbean.

  6. Yep, saw that just now. Yay - it must have only been holiday sailings - the airlines probably refused during that time.

Question asked and answered in record time!

The decision not to have the luggage valet for November and December seemed to be on the Independence only out of Ft. Lauderdale. I guess they got enough feedback to bring it back for future cruises. Glad you'll be able to use it for your cruise.

  7. I would like to see statistics.

    http://www.police.bm/content/crime-statistics

Here are the quarterly crime statistics from the Bermuda police.

Also, this article from 2013 states that most crime is decreasing, although gun murders are not decreasing.

    http://www.bermudasun.bm/Content/Default/Latest-News/Article/Crime-drops-but-no-let-up-in-gun-murders-/-3/1297/63943

"Crime in Bermuda is falling — but gun killings remained at the same level last year compared to the year before.

The latest statistics released by police show that five men were shot dead in 2012, the same as in 2011.

But there were fewer gun injuries, with seven in 2012 and 11 in 2011.

There were also fewer murders year-on-year, with a further three non-gun murders logged in 2011 compared to last year.

The overall crime rate dropped by 382 offences (8.7 per cent) last year compared to 2011, with 3989 offences recorded for 2012.

That compares to a total of 4371 offences for 2011, although the comparable figures for the last quarters of the year show a 3.4 per cent rise (30 offences) compared to the same period in 2011.

A report on crime said: “There were an average of 77 offences a week in 2012 compared to 107 offences a week in 2008, reinforcing the view that the long term trend of all crime in Bermuda has been decreasing.”

But the report added: “There was a minor increase in year-on-year firearm incidents with 53 in 2012 compared to 53 in 2011.

“There were 30 forensically confirmed firearm incidents in 2012 compared to 26 in 2011 and 54 in 2010.”

Firearms incidents include cases where shots have been fired, but no one has been injured, as well as the seizure of guns or ammunition.

Crimes against property have also fallen over the two years, by more than 11 per cent (320 offences).

There were 2541 crimes against property logged in 2012 compared to 2681 the year before.

The report added: “Traffic collisions continue to decrease both in quarterly and yearly comparisons. There were an average of 35 traffic collisions a week in 2012 compared to 47 traffic collisions a week in 2008.”

Drug enforcement activity, however, dropped by more than a third in 2012 compared to the previous year.

    There were 580 incidents logged in 2012 compared to 900 in 2011 – a fall of 380.

But the report added: “Drug enforcement activity has decreased since 2011, however, the long term trend continues to increase.”"

  8. We have been told twice this year (while onboard Rhapsody and Oasis) that RCI would be bringing out a new promotion that would make us "very happy"! We have been asking since we were informed that the Diamonds in December promotion was discontinued. While on Oasis, we were told that the new promotion would be out by the time we were on our next cruise.

Has anyone heard anything? We are sailing on Freedom Sunday.

    Thanks,

    Caren

My wife and I got off the Independence yesterday. We received a card that informed us that all diamond, diamond plus, and pinnacle members sailing in the month of December will be automatically entered in a drawing. There are three winners and each prize is a balcony stateroom for two onboard the Quantum of the Seas in 2015. You have to had booked your December cruise by November 30th; so don't try booking a bunch of 3 and 4-night cruises now to increase your odds.

  9. Luca Iorio will be my concierge on the Legend next month. What is he like? Is he outgoing, conservative, is he a happy guy, helpful. Sounds like an Italian name, correct? Does he treat suite and D+ folks the same or does he favor the suite guests.

I agree with everyone. Luca is a happy, helpful outgoing concierge. We were with him on the Legend in September and a couple of years ago on the Mariner. He is Italian (from around Rome). He's also a foodie if you want to talk food. Enjoy your trip.

  10. I'm not clear. Which does Independence currently have--a Portofino or a Giovanni's Table?

I think it's a Giovanni's Table, but I got an email from Royal Caribbean about an upcoming Independence cruise that said Portofino. I think the email is wrong and Royal Caribbean doesn't use a proofreader to check the emails they send out.

  11. Number 44 is just for the patent for the design of the shape of the glass on the balconies, because they make a crystal light reflection.

Here is the sight of the patent (after reading the entire thing it was stated that the first picture of the ship has certain important aspects of it removed - I think it was done to stop people like us catching on to what ship they have patented this for)

    http://www.google.com/patents/US7617790?pg=PA1&dq=royal+caribbean+international&hl=en&sa=X&ei=OgWBUuzdJ6O-sQS8yIHICQ&ved=0CD8Q6AEwATgU

This patent is assigned to Crystal Cruises and is not owned by Royal Caribbean. Note how the crystal-like appearance may be related to the name of the ship, for example, Crystal Harmony.

The reason that it came up on a Royal Caribbean text search is because the examiner cited "Royal Caribbean Freedom Class Virtual Tour" as a reference.

  12. As I mentioned earlier there, they will not "legally" be able to call it Royal Promenade, because that name is trademarked by company that built OA, FR and VOY classes.

Where did you get this information?

If you do a trademark search on the USPTO website, there is no US trademark for Royal Promenade.

Also, it doesn't seem consistent with the OP.

  13. A huge cruise ship trying to make a u-turn in the Hudson River/Upper Bay with all the ship traffic would not be a very smart idea...it would be a giant safety hazard and I doubt the Coast Guard would allow it...in fact I doubt any ship's captain would try it. You can't stop, start and turn a cruise ship like a car...or even a small boat.

These ships are large, but the New York harbor is considerably larger.

See the following video at :31 to :44 to view the Freedom of the Seas in the New York Harbor.

The Freedom actually anchored for a couple of hours off the Statue of Liberty.

I guess the Coast Guard approved that.

People want to see the Quantum of the Seas near the Statue of Liberty.

  14. I still have not booked a cruise but I keep hoping the one that sails out of NY will have a price drop as it would be a "bucket list" item to sail past the "Lady" Thanks again....I really appreciate this information!

Does anyone know why Royal Caribbean doesn't just sail north for a couple of miles to get the good view of the Statue of Liberty before turning south? People seem to want it and their website still uses an old photo featuring a ship sailing past the Statue of Liberty.

  15. That's where they put your Crown & Anchor status (e.g. Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond). If you're not yet a C&A member, they probably put "VIP" because it sounds better than "pre-Gold".

I saw on my online cruise documentation on the luggage tags printable page that i got this Vip sign written... but dunno why

I don't have a suite booked, just a superior balcony cabin, and not a crown member..

has this vip sign a meaning?
