Thanks for all your advice folks. I have now booked a refundable room at Times Square and I’m pretty happy with the price

1). Your week is the opening of the UN General Assembly. It’s the most expensive time of the year. Only you can determine how much you’re willing to pay to be in the heart of NYC. Since you’re sailing on Anthem, Jersey City near the Newport or Exchange place Path Station would be an option. Give us a realistic budget and we’ll look around.
2). Look at a large metro area car service from NY to NJ - Dial7 or Carmellimo.
3). The big car rental operations are at Newark Airport. Uber to the airport area is fine. If you’re going to New England you will need an Ez pass for tolls. Directions to get through the NY metro area can also be provided.
I don't think i have budget as such, it was just more expensive than i was expecting!I
I don't want to pay less and then find out I'll have to commute for hours to get anywhere central. Previously when we're in the USA we've used Sheraton, holiday garden inn, best western. I do realise that New York rooms will be a lot smaller.
Friends have stayed in the new Yorker, Gregory and Ink48(I think it was!) They said location is vital.
If we Uber to Newark i m hoping we could make good headway north on t he same day?

If you want to tour NYC, then you probably want to be centrally located, though it isn't unheard of to stay in New Jersey and commute.
Where are you going in New England as your first stop? Even more important, where are you flying home from? That would probably best determine your rental car needs.
We have no determined itinerary yet for New England, at the moment I'm thinking up through Jaffrey/Peterborough, alstead, Quechee, Rochester, Stowe then newport, coming back down through the white mountains.
Would a flight up to Manchester be worthwhile or would driving up be more pleasant?
We fly back from JFK as we can do a direct flight from there

A 3 part question.....
1- We’re flying in to JFK in September on a Monday and cruise out of Bayonne on the Thursday. Looking for advice on hotel location and transport.
From what I’ve seen so far hotels in Manhattan are extortionate (from £1000 for the 3 nights), but is it worth paying the price to get the benefits of being centrally located?
2- We then need to get to Bayonne in the Thursday morning.....Uber? Never used it but my children tell me to download an app, do I need to register beforehand ?
3- after the cruise we’re taking a weeklong road trip up to New England. I wrongly assumed I would be able to pick a rental car up at the port. Would catching a train north and then renting be advantageous or taking an Uber to the closest car hire?

There was one last week on the Black Watch 5 nighter
-
Very slow service last week on black watch. One afternoon i ordered a drink in the Lido bar, went down a deck for a sandwich, ate it, got back to the bar as it was just arriving!
No service at all most days at the pool, we had to walk up a deck
-
Just off Black Watch this week. Most of the films i noticed were classic, also noticed the greatest showman which is fairly recent. The sound on our tv fluctuated greatly so we had to sit holding the controls

On another thread an RCI rep on board Anthem now has confirmed in writing that bookings made prior to the change will be honoured as a set fee.
Yet I've had it confirmed that all reservations prepaid come back as OBC. Not much use when some if the entrees are $25 each.
I'm more upset that Divinely Decadence is now a al carte- we were really looking forward to that one.

people need to know about this formal night stuff.
If my TA would have informed my girlfriend (at the time of booking) we wouldn't have booked.
The majority of people do know about 'this formal night stuff'. Quantum class are sold as revolutionary, with dynamic dining.
It sounds like you have used a TA as just a booking agent, not as Travel Advisors!

If you make a mental note of the price on board before your first port, you'll be able to tell is the shore cost is a good deal.
-
It maybe just that they are amending prices at the moment, gratuities on the packages are going from 15% to 18%
-
Looks like I was more fortunate then, never seen the price less than what I paid. Booked 10/11 months out and got a good price with the drinks and grats, checked again this morning and its quoting £220 more per person, without drinks - pays for my upgrade to a 'decent' drink anyway!!!
Going slightly off tangent, I notice the drinks package only states wine, beer and cocktails. Does this mean that the U.S. refer to something like a gin and tonic as a cocktail?

Or wait another 3 or 4 weeks and sign up for early or late 'rotational' dining

like a non ship-sponsored motorcoach or bus transfer into Rome.
But....the OP can come back and clarify.
That is just the sort of thing I'm thinking of. I'm just a bit nervous about a train being cancelled and missing the ship
-
Any suggestions for an excursion into Rome, but not by train? We would prefer a coach/minibus.
As we only want to see the Vatican museums and the Coliseum (rest of the day will be spent meandering) a full guided tour seems unnecessary.
The ship transfer comes in at about £60, so for 5/6 works out too excessive

Surely this is geared towards children? So would it not make more sense to charge $10 per child, with the adults going free??? (Limited to one free adult per paying child)
-
Just off the Quantum. Men must wear a jacket to enter the Grande dining room. No exceptions. Some people we met in the Diamond Club were told Grande will loan you a jacket, but they refused the offer and were denied entry.
Excellent news for us :)

I figure that for about 90% of the time I spend in the cabin, I'm either lying on the bed or in the bathroom, neither of which make a difference whether I have a balcony or not!!!
-
Why not buy them from the store here at CC ? I just ordered some for my trip on the Allure in October.
Excellent idea, apart from the $10 postage charge to the UK :(
-
I am sailing on the Celebrity Eclipse in Oct & have purchased the Premium Alcoholic Drinks Package.....my question is can I order a large glass of wine or double measure of gin for example with this option or not....Thanks x
Bear in mind that spirits are hand poured (apart from molecular bar) so are much stronger than a standard pub measure

All Veranda rooms are the same layout, whether they be Veranda, Aft Veranda, Concierge or Aqua. I believe its only the veranda size that differs on some cabins.
Moving to a Veranda Aft you would lose your Aqua perks, and gain a wake view

As you are from the UK, I cannot see the point in taking any dollars. If you feel the need to give an extra gratuity for anything we just give in Euros. The staff all have time off at some point and they can use them then for phonecards, toiletries, gifts for their family etc.
They never object to receiving any currency.
We never take any dollars, general gratuities go on the seapass card, we don't use the casino.
A tip is not expected for room service, but the odd dollar/euro is nice to give for their service. The nighttime fee (midnight to 5am?) would go on your seapass card).

Looks like a great price from over here. UK pricing is £399, which is over $600 !!!!
