  1. Well, there is a problem that someone who doesn't cruise regularly (as many do) might think 'Er, Pacific Sun, they still have that old ship?!' or 'I sailed on that a few years ago, and wouldn't want to go on it again...'

These will be a substantial step up from those ships.

Or I loved sailing on the Pacific Sun, it would be wonderful to sail on her again.:)

Or realizing it is a second Pacific Sun would still be inclined to sail on her just because I liked the original and want to compare them.

  2. We have not been to Mare, New Caledonia before.

What is there not to miss in Mare??

Is there any good swimming / snorkelling spots??

Any info would be great! As this is our first time to Mare :).

I was a little disappointed with Mare'. Yedjele Beach was beautiful with clear and colourful water.

We walked to the end of the beach because the music was so loud, it was not far enough!! I love to hear the surf and birds, all the natural sounds that make a South Pacific beach so special.

Where we were the sand was mostly covered with coral, still looked great, just had to pick your steps.

I didn't find the snorkelling as good as other Islands but I was probably in the wrong place.

I prefer the Islands where you can enjoy the views and swimming without having to travel by bus. However what spoilt the day for us was the very loud music, playing for a lot of the time Céline Dion, not that I don't like her singing, but it was out of place on the beach and impossible to escape, island music at a much lower volume would have been better.

  3. looking at luxury, premium lines and dates tend to be only 4 times in those 3 mos.So sort of limited.

The Jan.6 date is listed as $1000 per pr.cheaper and was wondering WHY?

Guess its just vacation time, not sure.

Only have 18 days total vacation time,so that's the reason why time limited.

Would LOVE to spend more, but not retired yet.

The HOT weather is no problem, can see we re from FL(used to it).

Was just worried about the rough Tasman sea over to NZ,but can t predict that.

Taking a Scenic cruise with lots of Aussies in June, can pick their brains for more details too.;)

The lower fare in January on a ship not used by families may be cheaper as they would find it harder to fill, due to the fact that most people without children avoid the school holidays.

Even though the ship is not effected by the extra children and higher prices everything else is, hotels, ports of call etc.

  4. Yes, she is due for her refurb in Feb 2015.:)

She will be getting a flow rider, 3D movie theatre & the new virtual balconies for inside cabins as well as the usual upgrades.

Does anyone know exactly what virtual balconies are? perhaps they supply you with electronic face viewers!!:)

  5. Can anyone enlighten me about what one will see while cruising New Zealand on the way to Australia on the Solstice? Trying to figure out whether to book an ocean view or balcony stateroom...

We tried our first balcony cabin on the Carnival Spirit and we did enjoy the experience but it was not quite what I expected we found it too restrictive to sit out on the balcony more that a couple of minutes, the main advantages was fresh air, a good view, a much bigger viewing area than ocean view and clean windows when the door was shut.

The only disadvantage was a whistling sound from door seals.

As for viewing the Sounds or any scenery you are bound to miss out on seeing some views perhaps the best ones, I would always go up on deck, the balcony is far too restrictive you need to move around and being with fellow passengers is part of a cruise for us.

Don't forget you have 50% chance of being on the wrong side for the views.

  6. The service charge and the automatic gratuities were discontinued by Princess on 1st May 2011 for the three Australian ships (Dawn Princess, Sea Princess and Sun Princess). There would not have been the extra charge of 15% on drink prices in December 2013 on any of those three ships.:)

All Australian and New Zealand based ships including (P&O Australia-Pacific Dawn-Jewel and Pearl also Carnival Spirit) have removed the extra charges to comply with the laws and customs of those countries.

How can they possibly be gratuities when they are automatic?

  7. Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has cruised with Princess Cruises before and what you thought of them. I'm considering doing one to Noumea and Vanuatu in June on Sea Princess would love to hear any reviews.

Also is June a good time to travel to Noumea and Vanuatu I believe it would be cooler and not in cyclone seas or rainy season but is it too cold to swim or still okay to swim?

Would love to hear from anyone who has been during this time of year and any reviews on Princess Cruise Line - Sea Princess.

    Thanks.

Every cruise is different and cruisers have different priorities, but Princess is my favourite line and Sea Princess is my favourite ship.

We have cruised to New Caledonia and Vanuatu in June and snorkelled at most of the stops.

I think you will love your cruise on Sea Princess, but have a look at some reviews that you will find on this site.

Look under Cruise Critic Message Board, then under members reviews.

  8. something i didn't know that they had afternoon tea on the Pearl

Just checked the date we sailed on the Pearl it was April - May 2012, they still served afternoon tea in the restaurant then, but only on sea days.

I first sailed on a P&O ship in 1963, they served afternoon tea at that time.:)

  9. My sister finished a cruise on the Pacific Pearl this morning and told me they no longer serve afternoon tea on P&O, surely this can't be true .

I haven't cruised with them recently so I hope someone can say P&O have not broken the tradition of serving tea and scones in the afternoon. :)

  10. I have been watching Centreports webcam. Looks can be deceiving, the harbour looks calm, but then then that is because it is so sheltered. Cook Straight will be wild. I heard the ferry sailings have been cancelled for today again.I also note from the cam that a tug has been alongside nudging Pacific Pearl into the wharf . I wonder if this is because of the wind?

The storm that hit Christchurch has been described as the worst weather event since 1975.

I have been watching the Pearl since before 8am NZ time (6am in Aus.) I thought the tug was there to help her leave but it appears to be just holding her in and now a second tug has arrived, maybe she is about to leave, a bit rough out there though!!

  11. Yes, It does look like the Pearl has missed Akaroa today.

I would guess because it was too windy for them :(

Thanks Kiwi cruiser, my sister is aboard and I told her what a wonderful place Akaroa is.

Still she will be able to use this disappointment as an excuse for another trip around your wonderful Islands.:)

We have been around 4 times, did miss Napier once and in Akaroa they had trouble with the tenders due to strong winds.

Wellington next, not likely to have windy weather there are they!!

I believe it is possible you were aboard last year when we missed Napier.
