  1. When we travel and almost every day in social situations we are OC about using hand sanitizer. There are too many people that do not use good hand cleaning lately. I rarely ever touch a door knob bare handed and always discretely use hand sanitizer after shaking hands and always after touching a menu. If the menu is on our plate we request new chargers and or silverware. If you get it you missed cleaning up your hands somewhere and you probably touched your face with stuff you picked up.

  2. I wonder how the smaller river cruises (Uniworld for example) provide safe passage up and down the Nile for their passengers? We decided to take that route to get to safely see the places in Egypt that we want to see. Their tourism business is hurting really bad so they are trying very hard to build it back up. It is not the Egyptian government that is forcing the cancellation, it most likely is the cruise line in the abundance of safety or $$$$$ costs.

  3. Hello. I'm researching fishing excursion for our next year's cruise aboard the Eclipse (southern Caribbean ports of Aruba, Barbados, St. Maartin, St. Kitts, Bonaire, Antigua, Curacao, St. Lucia). I've posted in our roll call looking for interested fishermen to join us for a 4 hour fishing trip.

We're from Minnesota (lots of fishing on lakes - no experience deep sea fishing).

Does anyone have any experience in these ports and/or recommendations?

Is it better further in the ocean vs near shore for wave action (don't want to get seasick)

Are there operators that offer trolling vs still fishing. (One interested party did not want to troll).

We will be leaving Miami April 3; any specific recommendations for fishing at this time of year?

    Thanks for your assistance.

    Melissa

We have yet to charter in those waters. But it remains on our bucket list. I would do a Google search for 6 passenger charters in those ports for information and then contact the various operators. There are various seasons for different fish. Marlin, Tuna, Grouper, Red Snapper, Barracuda, etc. Trolling is good for some fish still fishing for others. Sorry, I couldn't be of more help than that. BTW we had a great time fishing in Bay of Islands (we were at anchor a few miles off shore) I have trolled off the NJ coast for Tuna and was very successful many times. Alaska for Salmon and trolled off the cost of Mexico.

  4. We've been toying with the idea of a river cruise as well and have been looking at Uniworld, too. This is very helpful. Two questions:

    1) Is there any way to see in advance how large a group will be for a tour (thus leaving us the option to organize a private one)? We too (as Bill and Sandy will remember from our last cruise) enjoy the smaller group format. Much easier to make friends and less drama. :)

    2) When do the ships leave the dock typically? Would we be able to do dinner in the cities?

    Thanks!

    Hey Uze guys,

    1. I dunno, but our experience is the ships are so small that when we elect to joint a group on board we have about a half a dozen to a dozen to choose from depending on the size of the boat and number of passengers. Being so small you get to know who to go with once you are there for more than one day.

    2. That varies and in some cases yes. Dinner in the cities are a possibility depending on the city and if your boat's schedule. Forgetabout fishing though.

  5. Pinot lover,

Thanks for the info. We have found on two prior Uniworld tours that their included small group walking tours and occasional bus rides were more than adequate. We typically tour on private tours with Oceania because we enjoy the smaller more intimate groups of three or four couples. When it gets over 6 or 8 couples our experience usually less than expected. Uniworld tours we have experienced were not massive, around 6 couples or so with a guide and mostly on foot. Not a massive 48 passenger bus fully loaded. If I want that kind of experience I can get it really cheaper by riding a bus to NYC Port Authority Bus Terminal.

  6. We are booked on a Nile River Cruise this fall. Concerned, yes, very, will be very careful and alert. Survived a year & Tet in Saigon a long time ago, so I just have to keep hyper vigilant again. I think if it is too dangerous the ships won't sail and the State Dept. will warn us against it.

I was just thinking of the odds. Driving a car in the USA, gun violence, particularly driving on the Garden State Parkway, NJ Turnpike or the Cross Bronx Expressway. vs. a little trip to Egypt. We do buy an occasional lottery ticket don't we? Then again we could hide in the Jersey Pine Barrens. They say life is not a dress rehearsal. So on with the show.

  8. I'm used to Oceania and like the size, port intensity, and quality and type of food on this line. I'm looking at a river cruise in Europe and Egypt and based on initial research, feel that Uniworld would give me a comparable experience. Traveling solo so I like the included excursions that seem to be small group based since the ships are so small. Any of you Oceania fans with any insights on Uniworld or other?

    Hi,

Our TA recommended Uniworld to us back in 2012. We signed up with her for the Budapest to Amsterdam and then Marseilles to Lyon cruises. We were very satisfied with the entire process door to door. We have now booked a Nile River cruise with them for later this year. We met a now single friend on the Budapest to Amsterdam cruise. She was very happy with the cruise as well. The small groups were a big plus. Landing in the middle of everything was easy on easy off, the food was very good, wine and beer at dinner was included. Sometimes they rafted the cruise boats together and we would either walk through another lines lobby to get to shore. The really big lines that advertise with weekly mailings are just that Mass Market, huge groups. We liked the more personalized services and smaller groups for the included tours. The demographic is much more like Oceania on Uniworld.

  9. Thank you for the feedback. I assume that when you logged in to the old site that it had your Oceania Club number already there? It should have transferred over, so we will be sure to look into that.

To add your number if it is not there already, login at My Account and go to Edit Profile (https://www.oceaniacruises.com/myaccount/edit-profile/). Ensure that you have your name and date of birth complete, and save your profile information. Your Oceania Club information should then populate automatically, including your current level, past sailings, etc. on this page: https://www.oceaniacruises.com/myaccount/oceania-club/.

    Hi,

I followed your instructions multiple times and it did not work. Still no Oceania Club info shows up. Called the office in Miami and they said it would be fixed by Monday, 16 March. I will check again tonight. Good luck.

  10. We never saw any of you guys after this outing! Looks like you had a blast! Wish I could have been with you!

The glow worms in the cave was pretty neat and glad I saw them, but would rather had been fishing!

It is hard to be everywhere and sometimes we are not in port long enough to do everything. If the tease visit in port is good enough we try to come back and spend more time. We are sorry that you couldn't fish with us.

Jeannie likes the boat ride on the fishing trips and enjoys catching the bait fish. We try to do it on most of our cruises where the fishing is good.

If anyone knows of good fishing locations near ports please let everyone know. We share tour information why not fishing guides too?

    Bill

  11. That's a nice fish Bill :)

Did you get to go through the Hole in The Rock as well?

Thanks. We didn't have to go that far out. We were able to see Marina all the while in the distance. We owe our successful catch and dinner to Anglers Anonymuos and their guide Darren.

We need a place for cruisers to post about fishing while in port. We landed in Bay of Islands on board Marina this week. The boat we we booked on line met us at the tender docking pier. We had a great 6 hour fishing trip. Darren our Captain and guide was very instructive on the techniques to catch and land the three King Fish and one John Dory, we caught a few that were under 1 meter long that we threw back. We used live bait that we caught with lighter tackle. When we got back to the dock He filleted the fish and we had a party at the Pier Restaurant. I will post photos when I get time to down load them.
