  1. In working with the room service manager planning a UBD on embarkation day, he gave me the impression that most of the ones that he did were on port days. So, I think you are more than OK asking for yours on a port day. Keep in mind though, that some time slots may not be available. He was very happy to give me any time I wanted when I asked for ours to be on the first sea day.

My suggestion is that you start calling room service as quickly as possible when you arrive at your cabin on embarkation. I have to assume that the sooner you make your request, the better chance you have of getting a preferred time.

We have enjoyed the UBD three times, now, and have done it all three times on a sea day--just our preference. Yes, on all three ocassions it has been quite windy, and, once, it was pretty darned cold. We just moved the event into the cabin next to the slider. It's been great every time.

Is it customary to tip the UBD wait staff?

  3. I guess there are 2 formal nights for a 7 night trip? Does my husband need a jacket or can he get away with just a collared shirt and khakis? And can an upscale sundress work? We are trying to pack light.

If you go to your online Princess Personalizer for this cruise, you can print off your Travel Summary (click on the 'Print Boarding Pass' link at the top) and you will then see the link to print off the Travel Summary. Look at the bottom of the Itinerary section where it will state how may formal and casual nights are on your cruise.

My DW and I are doing 10-days on the Royal Princess in October and it states "Your itinerary includes 2 formal nights and 8 smart casual nights.".

    Have a great trip.

  4.

-Mini-Suite: we always book a balcony cabin, but this was our anniversary cruise so I booked a mini, plus I had wanted the larger angled balcony given the complaints of the small balconies on board. The mini was huge, had a full sized sofa, 2 TV's and an amazing bathroom with a full sized tub. While the size of the room was nice, we both agreed that we would be just fine in a balcony and it wasn't worth the extra money for the mini. Would I take it as an upgrade if offered? Absolutely, but I wouldn't pay the large price difference in the future as I did this time. I also believe that the standard balcony size is just fine for what we use it for, 2 people sitting reading, enjoying a drink or watching an arrival/sailaway.

Thank you for the great review. My DW and I are doing this exact itinerary on the Royal on October 27, 2016.

I couldn't find your stateroom number mentioned in any of your posts, or, perhaps I missed it. Which stateroom were you in? We are booked in B414 with the angled balcony mini-suite.

    Thank you.

  5. The Crown Princess is still docked at Canada Place. It was literally a mess this morning with all the disembarking passengers from the 3 ships. 3 hour line ups for a taxi. Not sure how immigration went. It is a shame that this bad PR has to occur especially since this usually happens at the start of cruise ship season with multiple ships in port at the same time. You think the port authorities and Customs would learn from past seasons.

  6. Here is a good article to read about purchasing additional travel insurance on top of any existing extend health/travel benefits you may have and having to make a claim. So important to ask/verify if your travel policy is "first payer" or not as it could affect any existing extended health coverage you may have as part of your employee benefit package at work.

  7. You can get annual travel insurance from your bank-at least I,living in Canada, can. Check it out!

Here is an interesting article about a Canadian couple who had extended health insurance benefits through their Pacific Blue Cross (PBC) plan but purchased additional travel insurance through RBC (Royal Bank of Canada). But when they wound up having to make a claim ($200,000.00), their RBC travel insurance that they bought for their trip was not first payer so RBC filed a claim against the wife's PBC plan and this has now affected her lifetime coverage at PBC, which was at $500,000.00. If the couple had purchased their additional travel insurance through PBC, this would have been a non-issue and not affected her life time coverage limit.

So bottom line is, read the fine print and make sure that any additional travel insurance policy your purchase is first payer.

We will be purchasing our additional travel insurance via PBC as my existing PBC extended health insurance policy has no life time limits on coverage amounts.

  8. Arrived in LAX after our morning flight from YVR. Met a fellow CC in the flight down who will be attending the informal M&G at the Outrigger Bar after Muster.

We waited about 30 mins after arriving at LAX for our Princess shuttle to San Pedro.

Arrived at 12:20pm and are all checked in awaiting our group to be called. Very organized embarkation so far.

Weather is sunny and warm about 75F (23C).

Have to make the dining room call as soon as we get in to our room. I hope i didnt demagnetize our rooms keys as i put them in my shirt pocket with my cell pbone. Will have Passenger Services check them out before heading to our room.

Well, our group is next to board. Very nice and quick embarkation as i mentioned above.

  9. Well, don't forget, MedJet Assist will fly you back to your "home hospital" only after you've been admitted to a foreign horsepital. I guess you can be admitted, then while you're getting settled, you can be on the phone to MedJet, saying, "get me the hell out of here"!;:D or something to that effect.

Of course one of the great perks of this is that the spouse is flown back at no charge as well.

MedJet's policy clearly states you have to be admitted as an "in-patient" in a hospital (not just visiting the ER) more than 150 miles from your place of residence as noted on your MedJet policy, not solely in a "foreign" hospital.

So, say you live in Las Vegas and have an annual policy with MedJet and you take the family, say, to Disneyland in Anaheim and you wind up admitted as an "in-patient", not just a visit to the ER, you can be flown back to Las Vegas if you want/have to under the MedJet policy.

  10. Aquafina is the only bottled water we buy, when we buy it, as we feel it tastes just like tap water, which it turns out is true. I have always maintained that there is nothing wrong with most public water systems.

    Paul

It was actually in 2007 when Aquafina admitted they use public water sources. I think people are restarting this old news on the Internet now.

I just checked a bottle of Aquafina I recently bought and it clearly says on the label "Aquafina bottled water is a pure tasting water that orginates from public water sources...".

    Paul

  11. Don't forget that bottled water is, for the most part, tap or reservoir water. Aquafina recently came out and admitted that their bottled water is tap water.

  12. So sorry to hear of your Mom's fall but glad she is on the rpad to recovery.

It is nice to see these types of posts on CC when the cruise lines provides such excellent service and sincerely cares about their passenger's well being.

Princess does have great service and that is one of the reasons we sail exclusively with them.

    Keep well.

  13. As an Elite I must admit I do like the free laundry perk and would like to suggest to Princess that should a cruise be top heavy with Elites using the perk and turn around times being 72 hours or more that a possible solution would be to let me do my own laundry BUT refund my shipboard account for the cost of my doing it.

That way I still get the "free" laundry but without the extended turn around wait and it would help lessen the load on the ship's laundry.

    Just a thought.

I like this suggestion as most of the laundry facilities on board have been (or are in the process of) being converted to tokens or card swipe to activate the washers and dryers.

At the end of each day, Princess could scan the Elite accounts and reverse the laundry token purchases that day.

  14. Well, I just came across my original posting about the Premium Suite on this January 2016 sailing.

So much has happened since we booked back in March ,that I totally forgot we had this cruise on the Royal booked ! We subsequently cancelled this cruise.

We have other plans to visit friends who relocated from NY to Florida in January 2016, so the cruise was no longer an option.

I do thank all who responded with their experiences in the forward Premium Suites, and to those who plan to sail on that ship next January,I wish you all a Bon Voyage!

I am not too disappointed though, because my DH and I are booked on a Hawaiian cruise on the Ruby Princess on March 24,2016.

My fingers are crossed that we do get to sail on this cruise.

Sometimes, life gets in the way of our plans, but I often remind myself that flexible people don't break!

    Happy cruising to all!

Even though you have cancelled this sailing, here is a recent review of the S5 category on the Royal.
