  1. My first thought is MSG. It is a flavor enhancer, usually used in Chinese Restaurants, but used frequently in other restaurants too. I am not affected by it, but I know people who are. The fact that you acquire the rash after sailing and it goes away a day or two after you are home, supports a reaction to something you are ingesting or in contact with on the ship. As long as it doesn't cause shortness of breath, hives or other signs of distress, it's probably a mild sensitivity. :o

Here is an article that might explain:

    http://www.msgtruth.org/inflamma.htm

another article from emedicinehealth.com Another example of food intolerance is reaction to MSG. MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a white-colored additive used to enhance the flavor of food. It is a fermented mixture of glutamic acid, sodium, and water and is used mainly in Asian cooking. Over the last 30 years, side effects from MSG have been related to its use in Chinese food and referred to as the Chinese restaurant syndrome. In this syndrome, MSG was suggested as the cause of the symptoms following a Chinese meal. In 1995, a new term was coined, the MSG symptom complex, to include all the reactions that were reported to be related to MSG. These reactions are not a true food allergy, and the exact cause of the reactions is unknown.

  2. I buy a lot of clothes at Chico's and it allows me to pack very lightly because the colors are consistent and can be reliably mixed and matched within a color scheme. I take blue, khaki and black and can have a couple weeks worth of outfits out of 5 pairs of bottoms and about 10 tops. I usually go with long khaki and black pants, khaki and blue ankle pants and black capris. Mix those with long sleeve, 3/4 sleeve and short sleeve tops and a couple sweaters in the same color scheme with a couple white or ivory tanks and you're good to go! Oh, and I just got a long crinkle skirt on sale that matches with all of it too! If you shop Chico's use the coupon codes and buy off the sale page for the best deals! Includes 5% off and free shipping for members.

This has been a very fun thread and I've enjoyed keeping up with everyone's outfits! :D

  3. We are getting ready for our first visit to the Croatian Coast, including Kotor on Monday, June 13 from 7 am to 4 pm. We will be tendered and plan to be up early to see the "sail-in" to this dramatically positioned, fjord-like port stop. We are considering three different ship tour, all fairly reasonable in pricing. Would like to some feed-back on these three options:

#1: Driving up to Njegusi, with a panoramic view of the Bay of Kotor, Old Royal Capital of Cetinje, photo stops en route to Budva and then seeing this historic coastal, medieval fortified town, finishing with a panoramic sightseeing walk through the old town of Kotor; 7 hours, $76.75

#2: Driving up to Njegusi, with a panoramic view of the Bay of Kotor, village of Njegusi, Royal Capital of Cetinje, sightseeing walk through the old town of Kotor; No Budva coastal visit; 5 hours, 45 minutes, $50.75

#3: Driving 55-minute drive along the Adriatic coastal route seeing the town of Budva, reaching the 15th century settlement, now a worldwide recognized hotel resort of Sveti Stefan; shopping time in Kotor at the end; four hours, $38.75

Three interesting and good stops for sights, lots of pictures, etc. What have you seen and done in this area? What did you love the most, hear great things about?

    THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did the OP asked about Koper in Slovenia. or Kotor?

  4. I have read where many woman carry clutches or hand bags in the evening for dinner. Is there a reason or is it an accessory to the outfit? I'm trying to figure out if I need/want to take one. Thanks!

The only reason I carry one is for my glasses! I can't see the menu without them. Also, in case DH and I get separated for some reason (cookie run to the buffet) I will have my key to get back in the cabin.

  5. I love revlon colorstay, but I have to work fast with it since it dries relatively quickly.

This stuff is great! I haven't got any color in my lips at all, so to keep from looking dead, I used it daily. It did begin to dry out my lips after awhile, then I found LORAC which is the same as colorstay, but less drying. http://www.loraccosmetics.com/p-69-co-starsbrfont-size18-hour-long-wearing-lip-color-ultra-glossy-top-coatfont.aspx It's more expensive than revlon, but lasts a long time.

I know it's not a drugstore alternative, but sometimes when you get older and skin dries out more, you just have to upgrade.:o

  6. I've been in hotels where the hangers are these clip things that attach to the bar in the closet -- they are worthles for taking out and hanging up a bathing suit or whatever to dry in the bathroom.

Don't know what I will find in the cabin, so I just want to be sure I have something I can hang a bathing suit to dry on or a dress to freshen up with steam in the bathroom.

I also haven't found the sea sickness bracelets yet. The travel stores here are geared to young "trekkers" -- even if they are going to be on some kind of boat (as opposed to ship) going up or down river somewhere they would never admit to having that kind of a problem!

On Princess ships there are plenty of hangers that come off and can be hung in bathroom. If you want inflatables though a quick google search will find many. Here are some from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Inflatable-Travel-Laundry-Hangers-Clothes/dp/B0002VQKWO

    here are the bands: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_23?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sea+sickness+wristbands&sprefix=sea+sickness+wristbands

    One stop shopping! :D

  7. We're leaving on Friday for the Panama Canal on Princess, and I'll have my Nook Color with me. I've loaded it up with Moning's series, but I haven't started that yet. Plus some good old romances by Susan Wiggs and the last of the Nora Roberts bride quartet. I'm also excited about having a few magazines to read on the Nook Color instead of having to lug them around. I'm a big magazine reader on planes and trips, so it's nice to just have it all in the Nook.

Divingaggie, If you like Susan Wiggs, you might like Sherryl Woods (Chesapeake Shores series is my favorite) and Debbie Macomber (Cedar Cove) series.

  8. But you never know what "package" you're looking at! Many years ago while on vacation around many European men who wore speedos, I had lunch at a very casual beachside restuarant. A man in a speedo came in, sat down a few tables from me and proceeded to dig around in his mouth. I assume he was removing a retainer or partial.

Anyway, he removed his dental piece and wrapped it in a napkin. About that time I was thinking "Boy, I hope he doesn't accidently throw that away." And that's when he shoved his napkin wrapped "package" right down the front of his speedo !

Guess those speedos don't have pockets :p

    OMG:eek::eek::eek: I hope it didn't "bite" him!

  9. I like to take the magnet backed clips that you can get from the office store. We attach our daily newsletter to the walls, which are metal. Keep a different colored highlighter for each person clipped on so that each person can hi-lite the things that are of interest to them. This is also a handy place to put a notepad to let your roommate know where you went, make lists, jot down reminders, etc.

I like to take a pop-up small hamper for dirty clothes.. don't want them lingering on the floor or in my suitcase. The hampers take up very little room in the suitcase and are great for taking to do laundry in self service laundromat.

  10. On the Coral it's on the Baja Deck. It says "no admittance", but our steward took us there and said it was a good place to be for glacier bay. It was a deck under the bridge. There were only a few people there, but it was very cold!!!:o

  11. Yes, in fact the popular BE has a makeup primer called "Barevitamins Prime Time"

Haven't tried this brand but seems to have good reviews and they have one for face, oily skin and eyelids.

I have tried several primers, but none work so well with BE as the BE Prime Time does! It must have more silicone, as it feels less wet and more slippery! Haven't tried the monistat/lanacane chafing gel yet. :)

  12. I'm here! :)

I've heard of this before, although I've never tried it myself.

The product contains dimethicone (kind of like silicone) as well as aloe, and vitamin E. There's no fragrance and is totally nonirritating. So it makes sense that it's a good primer for those with sensitive skin.

Between this and Preparation-H around the eyes, and there's a lot of jokes in the pipline. :D:D

Tell us more about the prep h around the eyes!!! It's intriguing!

  13. I wonder if the producers of Project Runway come to this forum and read the comments posted here. They really should-----it would enlighten them.

Perhaps it's time to "Auf" Heidi, Nina, and Michael Kors for new judges.

I like Heidi, but is she a judge too or is her role strictly the host?

  14. Gretchen's looks were just blah to me.. and not really anything new. Heidi may have said "why not" to the back of her "eleventh" look .. but I can think of a whole lot of reasons why not ...

Didn't it remind you of the canvas bag that goes behind carriage horses to catch the manure? That was the first thing I thought of when she turned around!

  15. Yes, Graeme does require a deposit, easily paid through paypal (and he has a cancelation refund policy too.) The amount will probably depend upon the itinerary you choose. I paid with a bit of trepidation, but Graeme was so prompt in responding to my questions (and he had been recommended by others here on cruise critic, so I felt he had a bit of a good track record) that I went ahead. It worked out perfectly.

We're not going until Sept 2011, but I always like to get my ducks in a row early. Just wondering how far you put a deposit down and how much of a dep. did he require. Do you know how big or small of a group he takes? Thank you so much for the info!

  16. Just got back from our Med cruise and had an amazing day from Koper going to Ljubljana and Lake Bled...had a wonderful private tour guide (if you'd like his name, just ask...I don't think I can post it without a request) who made our day particularly special. Slovenia turned out to be the most pleasant surprise of the cruise itinerary...what a beautiful country and delightful people. We had a wonderful lunch at a local restaurant and, after sampling the blueberry schnapps just had to take a bottle home! A lovely, lovely day.

We are going in September and would love a contact! Yummm.... Blueberry Schnapps....:)
