  1. I just called United and we are flying into terminal C and out of terminal A. So yeah, not the best scenario.

Next flight into PVD isn't until 2pm, but there's one into BDL at 11:40. So at least we have some options. I still think we'd just rent a car and drive at that point.

Going to look at the terminal map now. Thank you everyone for your help!

  2. To the best of my knowledge United does not fly non-stop from ANC to EWR so you are likely connecting somewhere such as SFO, IAH, DEN, ORD.

The flights from SFO, IAH, DEN and ORD should all come into the C terminal but there could be exceptions on any day. EWR-PVD is served by United Express so it could potentially be out of C or A terminal. If you are all within the C terminal you should be fine as long as your flight is one time. Going C to A is a bit more of a challenge. The good news is that it is the end of your cruise so you will be on your way home. :)

Actually, our flight from ANC to EWR is indeed non-stop. It's a red-eye.

  3. Too risky!

They may hold your connecting flight for a few minutes if they know you are on the way, but then will your luggage make the connection even if you do?

You could ask a flight attendant for priority disembarkation, but if you have seats towards the back that would not work.

I have been in the EWR United terminal twice in the last few weeks, and on a Saturday morning it was manic, but on the following Tuesday morning it was relatively tranquil.

I don't think there is anything I can do about it at this point. If we miss it then I guess we will rent a car and drive home. But good point about the luggage, yikes. Scary thought.

I will have to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. There are five of us and although we can hustle when required, it still takes longer for us to get anywhere than a smaller party.

We will be there on a Sunday morning. I will make a point of telling the FA which connection we are on and maybe they'll be able to help us out when we land. I guess that's all I can do.

  4. Being a domestic connection it is doable but tight. EWR is huge and can be very hectic at peak times. I would familiarize yourself with the terminal layout so you have a good idea how to get from one point to another the most efficiently. If you don't have to change terminals it will be pretty easy, assuming flights are on time.

    Ok, will do, thank you.

Unfortunately, I don't know the terminals yet. Fingers crossed that we don't have to change.

  5. We are flying through Newark on our way home from our cruise. We have 45 minutes between connecting flights at Newark, same airline (United). It seems a little risky, but the airline had me book it that way so I'm assuming it's doable. I've never been to that airport so I have no idea how it's laid out or how hectic it is.

I know this seems like a silly question, but will they have those of us with tight connections get off the plane first? Is there anything special we need to do ahead of time?

  6. lisabucsfan1, I was curious about this, too, so I went on the AT&T website and looked at coverage maps for each of the ports (looks pretty good, actually). You might want to go on your carrier's website and take a look.

I was also told by the AT&T rep that you are not on the cruiseline's network until you are 10 nautical miles from shore, so if you're still getting a signal from land as you're pulling out or coming in, you could use it then as well.

Not sure about the inside passage... spotty coverage there so I don't think I'd take the chance with turning my phone on there even though it's less than 10 NM most of the way.

  7. Are flights from the US to Canada truly considered "international" for these purposes?

The airport limo service we've hired suggested we arrive at Logan two hours before our flight from Boston to Vancouver. If there is no traffic from our house to Boston (haha), then we will arrive 2h 45min before our flight. That leaves us only 45min for traffic if we want the full two hours to check in.

I'm starting to think we should leave at least 30 minutes earlier.

  8. I've been looking into restaurants in port and it got me wondering... will there be a lot of Alaskan-themed food served in the MDR on my cruise? We are especially interested in salmon and crab, of course.

I'm wondering if I should be looking for a restaurant that serves these things, or if that won't really matter since we'll have it on the ship, anyway.

    Any thoughts?

  9. If we plan to eat lunch in port only once, what is the best place?

We are seafood lovers, and although I imagine we might get the chance to have some king crab on our cruise, I'm not sure if we'll have had our fill so that would be a bonus. We would be looking for a sit-down place with decent ambiance and great food.

Our itinerary has stops in Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point, Juneau, & Skagway. None of our excursions include lunch and we'd have time to eat lunch at a restaurant in port on any of these days.

    Are there any "must-do" restaurants?

Or should we be thinking about convenience/accessibility as far as how easy it is to get back to the ship for lunch? We will not be tendered at any port.

    TIA!

  10. We are looking forward to our first Celebrity cruise, too. Our kids love to travel and do well when the best behavior is expected of them. They might miss some of the features of the other ships we have sailed on, but I know they'll appreciate what Celebrity has to offer. And they'll have Alaska to distract them!

    Hope you enjoy your cruise.

  11. How you pronounce Riedel depends also where you are from.

Ree-dell sounds like from the Southern United States. :D

Haha yeah I guess you are right.

I realized after I posted that he said it was actually ree-dle, like needle. Not sure why I put "dell". I need to stop posting at night when I'm tired! lol

  12. I just attended a local tasting with some wine distributors from my area. For some reason I got on the topic of Riedel tastings with one of them and he highly recommended that I try it on the cruise. He used to work for them and said that the glasses really do make a difference. I also learned from him that Riedel is pronounced "ree-dell", not "rye-dell" like I had thought all of these years. 13. Thank you everyone. Lots of good info and suggestions here.

I agree, the cruise itself is a wonderful gift! And although it is truly a family vacation, I wanted to honor the occasion of her graduation with a little something special, and originally I was just thinking a celebratory dessert at dinner one night would probably suffice. Then I got to wondering if I should do more. Or maybe just bring a little something from home. Maybe I could even have a t-shirt made with something cute like "graduation cruise 2016".

We just sat down and planned out our excursions with the kids a few days ago, so it's probably too late for a surprise. But I think she thoroughly enjoyed the planning process so that was like a gift in itself. When the kids were younger we used to plan everything and not tell them about the next day until the night before. Now they are older and I think they enjoy being included in the process (although I must say my 11-yr-old was a bit overwhelmed by the choices).

  14. Has anyone ordered any of the Gifts by Celebrity for Delivery Onboard? Are they packaged nicely and/or do they come with a note?

We are cruising to celebrate my daughter's high school graduation and we looked into the actual graduation packages but they are not appropriate for her because they include alcohol. So I was thinking of ordering a little something for a bon voyage gift like the Sweet Tooth selection.

I know people often buy bottles of wine this way, but I haven't seen many posts about the other gifts. I'd be curious to know when they are usually delivered and how they are presented. TIA

  15. Congratulations and enjoy! What a wonderful surprise.

We are a family of five, so no hopes of this happening to us unfortunately since it's highly unlikely there'd be a suite available right next to another room, and I don't believe any of the suites can accommodate five people.

Very exciting, though! I love to read about stuff like this. So happy for you! And happy for the people who might be last-minute book-ers and are able to snag your old cabin, too.

  16. We were one of those families that decided to go to Alaska instead of Europe this summer, mostly because of events happening there. I had already made hotel reservations and planned out our day trips. Thankfully I hadn't purchased air yet.

It was a pretty quick decision because side-by-side and adjoining cabins were selling out fast, so when we decided it was what we wanted to do, we booked it right away.
