  1. The flight time from ORD-FCO is a bit over 10 hours, not 12 hours.

You get through a long flight the same way you get through any flight; bring things to do, wear comfortable clothes, etc.

  2. The only moving walkways in Dulles are those that take you from the train to the concourse. There are no moving walkways once you have taken the escalator up to the concourse level. Depending on what gate you have, you could still have a long walk.

There are also moving walkways from the terminal to the parking garage.

To another poster, yes, they use carts to ferry passengers at IAD, not just wheelchairs.

  3. And those are typically off-airport services. Need to account for the time that involves. And be sure of their hours. That is not the same as being able to take your bags to a locker or storage service in the airport. You would still have your valuables with you, of course.

Yes, that is why I mentioned that some storage services are run by independent contractors.

  4. The concourses at Dulles are long and do not have any moving walkways. You may luck out and your gate may be very close to the train stop, but there is no guarantee. Your options are to request wheelchair assistance or walk at a leisurely pace as 2.5 hours is a long time to transit.

Not true, IAD is my home airport and I can assure you that there are a few moving walkways. The C gates are not close to the train stop. You have to walk or take a moving walkway from the train, then an escalator to get to the gate area. 2 1/2 hours is enough time to take a leisurely stroll between gates, have a meal, use the restroom, then sit at your gate waiting for your flight for about 1 1/2 hours!

  5. I am now confused went to SWA page, and there are 10 flights on Feb 1 from FLL to MDW. My guess is that because you are trying to get free flights they only have a limited number of seats on those planes and that one flight is all that has seats available. Since the cheapest flight that is workable is $200, and if there are two of you, book a hotel on the beach and extend your holiday an extra day. Just a thought.

    Good luck.

No, this can't be the issue, as OP is booking on Southwest. Award seats are not limited and there are no blackout dates.

  6. Check the LAX website but I doubt LAX, or just about any U.S. airport has unmanned bag storage.

I'm not sure how you plan on getting around the L.A. area for your day there but it might be easier to rent a car for the day and keep your bags with you.

Lots of US airports offer luggage storage. For future reference, they do at MIA, LAX, SFO, HNL, MSP, SAN, SEA, ANC, etc. Some are operated by independent contractors.

  7. No doubt it's a nice hotel, but it's also good to know that the location is not exactly central to many of Rome's sites. If you want to be in a quiet location that's either a long walk or a short ride from the main sites, it would be a good choice. But if you prefer to have a hotel that's more central (and bustling in the evenings), I'd consider something else.

It's a short walk to the subway, then a quick ride to all the major sites. It's also easy to walk from the hotel. However, if you want a noisy, busy location, instead of staying on a relaxing tree lined street next to a beautiful garden, then it's not for you. Personally, after staying in hotels on busy streets and being awakened at 3 am by drunken revelers, I'll take the quiet location.

  8. For such a monumental anniversary- I would probably stay at the Marriott across from the Borghese Park. You can walk to many places from there and it's just such a great location- with the park. I'd spend a bit extra and stay there.

Yes! I stayed there for a week last month and it is a very nice hotel in a great location; fantastic staff and it has a rooftop restaurant with a view of Rome. Harry's Bar is across the street, the American Embassy is down the street, it's right next to the Borghese Gardens and a short walk to the subway. My husband is a Marriott Platinum and we were upgraded to a suite with a private terrace.

  9. My husband (Marriott platinum member) and I recently stayed for a week at the Marriott Grand Hotel Flora. We originally had reservations at the Boscolo, but then I read they didn't give a free breakfast to gold and platinum members, so we switched. We got a room upgrade to a suite with a private terrace, which was great. The breakfast is served in a rooftop restaurant with a beautiful view of Rome. It's in a great location, right next to the Borghese Gardens, across the street from Harry's Bar and down the street from the American Embassy. The closest subway stop is about a 10 minute walk away. The staff and concierge desk were very helpful. I would definitely stay there again.

  10. And you should get your entire seat. If more people would discuss this problem (that someone is spilling over into their seat) before the flight takes off, you have a better chance of something being done. If someone can't fit into a seat with the arm rests down, and there is no place else to move them, they should be offloaded.

Until people assert their right to their seat nothing will change. The FAs aren't going to deal with it unless you request it. If they won't, go to the purser.

Taking immediate action is the key. Do not wait until halfway into the flight to complain when nothing can be done. I was recently on a UA flight, sitting in an aisle seat with a man at the window and an empty middle seat. Just when they were about to close the door, a man came running on, headed toward the middle seat next to me. He practically fell on top of me while opening the overheads looking for space for his bag. When he couldn't find any, he lifted his suitcase over me to put it on the floor. It was obvious that he was extremely drunk; I could smell the alcohol as he came down the aisle. I had to decide if I was going to make a fuss or put up with sitting next to this guy for a cross country flight. I got up and complained to a flight attendant; they brought me up to the front of the plane and brought on the gate agent, who said she hadn't noticed anything. I'm pretty sure this wasn't true, if only because he reeked of alcohol. Anyway, they pulled the guy off the plane and talked to him; then they let him back on, but moved him and his bag to the back of the plane where I guess they could keep an eye on him. Yes, I didn't like doing this, but it was better than dealing with a drunk for 5 hours who should never have been allowed to board.

  11. Please let us know how well you fare in any legal or contractual situations in the future. Who cares about actual law, wording, semantics or details -- it's all about what you think and your opinion.

Just a word to suggest that you will save yourself headaches in the future if you start to focus on details now. Before you become the geezer that you seem to think we are.

Words have meanings, and have consequences.

Perhaps it is only old geezers, (who, according to the poster addressed in the above comment, seem to be anyone over age 25, because no one older could possibly understand the internet or how it works ), who care these days about actual facts and details rather than "feelings" and "emotions." After all, isn't everything posted on Twitter in the heat of the moment true? And isn't that a great way to deal with problems, rather than having a rational discussion between parties involved?

  12. Yes, I was there last week. I didn't have to deal with luggage or immigration/customs as I was flying FCO-MUC-ORD-BWI (yes, I know, terrible routing). There is intense security at German airports, which takes extra time. I would be a bit uncomfortable with a connection as short as yours if I had to also go through customs/immigration and recheck bags.

  13. So here is what happened. The hotel simply ran a test charge to verify that your card is valid. You might want to make sure that when you stay at the hotel they credit you that 1 Euro (we would do this for general principles).

    Hank

No need; these charges should not go through.

  14. Libel, slander, a history lesson?! Who cares...

Since we are making personal attacks instead of actually proving any type of rational point- he was on Twitter(which is -for all you senior citizens who find it hard to make sense of all that mumbo jumbo nowadays- a worldwide and extremely popular social media site) and tweeted SWA with his issue because the company actually ENCOURAGES people to do just that if there is an issue. If you don't believe me, just click on this link and be enlightened-

    https://twitter.com/SouthwestAir

    ....

I care. There is a difference between libel and slander; why not make the effort to use legal terms correctly?

The second part of your post explaining Twitter is just plain insulting and reflects badly on you.

No matter what really happened (and none of us were there, so we don't have the real story), I think this guy behaved like a jerk tweeting the incident. Since when is every aspect of one's life considered so fascinating that there is this need to share everything? He should have taken up this issue directly with Southwest. I think Southwest should fire him as a passenger. Who needs another entitled troublemaker as a customer?

Please note I'm not a Southwest fan either.

  15. I'm glad you have one that works everywhere. There's a another post on this subject on another board and it seems to be a big issue with most US issued cards. Mine works everywhere except in unmanned booths at public transportation stations in France. It worked at motorway toll booths and gas stations (sometimes signing and sometimes it just went through). Will be glad when the US gets their act together!

Unfortunately most cards with chips issued in the US are chip and signature cards, not chip and pin cards.
