1. Ok thanks! I ran out of time planning and our cruise board in 2 days! Going on thr Allure of the Seas and will be at Falmouth next week. Will have to try to call or email at the airport tomorrow.

  2. Island Routes is the tour operator arm of Sandals it seems.

I was looking at bike and kayak combo but that's probably too much. I think kayak would be more fun.

Want to look for a local jerk place in Falmouth to eat on our way back to the ship.

LOL... we are not cruisers but former backpackers and now "flashpackers." All the other cruises were a means to an end. The Galapogas was our 10th Anniversary trip. This is the first pleasure cruise. I had a whole trip to Vietnam planned but the other half was too tired from work and chose this instead. I was looking at a HAL Eastern Caribbean cruise for the ports but couldn't see myself with that demographics. I barely tolerated it in Alaska. So Allure it was. Go big or go home right?

One more work week for me! When are you going?

  3. I just looked on TripAdvisor. There was quite a few reviews. Were you looking at the same thing? Looks like it was just opened in 2014 and developed by the Sandals resorts for their guests and others.

I am seriously looking at the kayaking here. Seems much more laid back than the cattle trips and closer. Thanks for the heads up!. Leaving for FLL next week and I have left Falmouth planning kind of late...

  4. Augh... everything is so expensive for one night 1/9/16 before our Allure cruise. Nothing under $250 that looks acceptable. Is it just high season prices plus the night before many cruise start?? About to book at 3 start near Port Everglades that I THINK is the Hyatt Place 17th St Convention Ctr. $275 with tax. Anyone else got more ideas?

Waiting paid off. I booked a refundable room at COMFORT SUITES FORT LAUDERDALE AIRPORT SOUTH & CRUISE PORT at 191 South West 19th Court in Dania Beach for $256.46 inclusive of tax.

Today, checked Hotwire again and got Comfort Suites Airport and Cruise Port at 1800 S. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale for $201.93 inclusive of tax.

    Happy bargain hunting everyone.

  5.
in Chinatown we ate the best soup with noodle we have ever eaten in our lives but the trek there was among a few streets that looked very questionable to me... any good Chinese places in downtown we might be able to find that soup again?
I am Chinese-American by way of Hong Kong. We ate at Hon's on Robson in May and the quality is up to our standards. http://www.hons.ca/hons_english.htm It was authentic and cheap with a huge variety of items on the menu. What type of noodle soup did you eat? Describe it and I can tell you if Hons will have it. I agree that Chinatown is very sketchy and Richmond is where the local Chinese go to eat.
  6. Thanks - the blog is more of a labour of love than everything - since I went on Facebook I haven`t used the blog as much but do update it every onece in awhile.

If you have the time when at Lynn Canyon do the Twin Bridges loop - you will see more waterfalls but a warning it is a bit of a workout - there are steep steps all along the trail - might post some more trail details when I find the photos which are on my old computer files.

    Cheers

    Dennis

Thanks for the tip. I'll see if my mom is up for it. She is a pretty active senior and she was able to do the relative steep steps along the Mist Trail in Yosemite Valley. I would love to do the Grouse Grind on another visit. Is there still snow on that trail right now?

  7. Here`s what to expect if you are going to do the Lynn Suspension Bridge - it`s a short video I took a couple of years ago.

    Enjoy

    Cheers

Thanks Dennis!!:D That's a great preview. It looks so lush. I really enjoyed the Olympic Peninsula in WA so this should be a treat. I love the living roof on the ecology center. I hope the weather will cooperate this Sat so we stroll around a bit.

Your blog is great. Will bookmark it to read later.

  8. By the time you clear customs, collect your luggage and get to your hotel it will likely be 11 am . So your thought of doing Granville Island and having lunch there is a pretty good one. This will also permit you time to judge the weather and decide what you want to do in the the afternoon. Lynn Canyon is where the locals go but it does not have the whistles and bells that tourists like...I would go the LC. Don't bother with Grouse Mtn if it is raining or if you can't see the top of the mountain.

Good point PD. Things always take longer than you plan. I think we'll just stick with lunch at Granville and then doing Lynn Canyon leisurely. I'm sure we'll be beat and want to take a nap before dinner!:p

  9. Great! So Robson has the same pedestrian vibe as Denman St? I was also thinking about Yaletown, but not sure how late it will be when we get back.

Help me with planning the one day we have in town - this coming Saturday. We arrive from CA about 9:30am to the airport. Was planning to buy the BC Transit day pass to ride to the hotel (Sheraton Wall Center). Will walk or take cab from the Vancouver City Center stop to hotel depending on how we feel.

Planning to go to either Capilano Bridge vs Lynn Canyon Bridge. Still trying to decide if I want to pay the extra $$ at Capilano. Grouse Mountain depending on weather. Also want to walk at Granville Island.

Should we go to Granville Island first? I was thinking of going there after we drop off the luggage at the hotel, stroll around, grab a quick bite to eat, then bus/cab over to the Waterfront station for the SeaBus to go across to North Vancouver.

  10. The last time I was in Vancouver was before the Olympics and we stayed at the Westin Bayshore. We LOVED walking up to Denman St. at night to eat. Cheap sushi, great international fare, and desserts. We are staying at the Sheraton Wall Center next Sat before our cruise. Anything near the Sheraton that is comparable or should just head back to Denman St. ?

  11. Unfortunately, I have this question again.. :( I asked mid-February if anyone knew how we could get off a Carnival ship then walk to the Catalina Express and spend the day on Catalina without having our luggage with us... and a couple of people mentioned the lockers at the Catalina Express terminal. I just called the Catalina Express terminal and "due to security reasons" they had to get rid of the lockers.

We are spending the night in BH with some relatives who will be picking us up once we return to the Catalina Express terminal ~ and I really do not want to ask them to meet us at the ship, take our luggage, and then return six hours later to pick us up...

    Any new suggestions??

Catalina Express won't keep your luggage?

  12. We will be arriving at LB airport very early (6am or so) on the morning of our cruise departure. Does anyone know how much cab fare is from the LB airport to the cruise terminal? Also, any recommendations as far as a good place to get breakfast either very close to the airport or very close to the terminal?

On our way back after the cruise our flight doesn't leave until 6pm or so from LB. Is there an easy-to-get-to movie theater somewhere close? We were thinking of maybe catching a movie or two if we don't check out Catalina Island.

There is a theater right at The Pike at Rainbow Harbor.

I think I read that cab fare is in the order of $30 from LGB to port.

I don't know if it is good, but the Queen Mary serves breakfast. It is right next to the terminal. http://www.queenmary.com/Promenade-Cafe.aspx

    This is probably better: http://omeletteinnlbc.com/

This is near the airport: http://www.yelp.com/biz/heritage-family-pantry-lakewood

  13. No, I have not been - just heard how good they are. What "secret menu"

And no, we won't have a car, but trying to decide between a town car & Super Shuttle from LAX to CP. Do you think the town car would charge to stop - or how much do you think a cab would cost? I'd really like to try one :)

    Secret Menu info:

    http://www.badmouth.net/in-n-outs-secret-menu/

    http://www.badmouth.net/graphics/inout/Secret_Menu.pdf

Now you can order like a local.

The town car will probably charge you to stop at the Carson location. Are you at the CP only for one night? Taking the shuttle as Wineaux suggested is probably your best bet. They open until 1am.

  14. Please tell me that there is an In 'n Out burger in San Pedro, close to the CP would be even better :D

The SP branch is on Western and Capitol (1090 N. WESTERN AVE. SAN PEDRO, CA 90732) Do you have a car? If not, you can probably cab over from CP. The other option is in Carson, right off the 110 freeway on your way to SP. Easy to get to if you are driving to the CP. (730 W. CARSON TORRANCE, CA 90502).

Have you had In&Out before? You know about the "secret menu" items? :D

  15. we will be at the double tree .we have gone over to pf changs but would like something different

I am Chinese and live in the area. There are no great Chinese places in the South Bay. You have to go to Chinatown or the San Gabriel Valley for those. But, here are my favorites.

PV Palace (also in Lomita across from Szechuan) is great for dim sum or family dinner. This is a Cantonese style restaurant with all the typical dishes. Dim sum is served daily until 3pm I think.

Shanghai Palace (in the same lot as the Ramada Inn) is a northern Chinese place where I go for my xiao lung bao fix. These are delicious steamed pork dumplings. http://www.yelp.com/biz/shanghai-palace-restaurant-torrance
