  1. Personally I never order a fridge from Special Needs. Generally it's placed in the room in addition to the existing cooler and takes up valuable floor space. Rather I pack meds in several zip lock bags and than pack in a small nylon lunch cooler bag. Once on board I fill the nylon lunch cooler with ice and place it in the existing cooler fridge,. I just ask the cabin to make certain there's an ice bucket in the room filled with ice at all times in case the ice needs to be replenished in the nylon lunch cooler bag.

This is usually what I do with my insulin as well. In fact if it is insulin that you need to keep cool, most insulin now does not require below 40 degree refrigeration. I grew up with insulin that required refrigeration at all times (I have juvenile onset diabetes). Now the most common ones like humalog, apidra, novolog, Lantus etc. don't require refrigeration if they are going to be used within 28 days. They say it can be kept at room temp. away from direct sunlight and temps. over 78 degrees.

If the medication that needs to be refrigerated is insulin, you should be fine just placing it in the mini bar. So long as you're not taking more than a month's supply with you.

If it's not insulin I agree with the suggestion of ice and a lunchbox in the mini bar. I'd rather keep all of the floor space I can in a cruise cabin. :)

  2. Hi all,

My hubby and I are cruising on the Grandeur of the Seas for the first time. This is only our second time cruising (the first was on the Carnival to the Bahamas in February of 2011).

We will be leaving out of Baltimore on October 24th for 8 days to the Bahamas. My question is...What is the weather like in Florida and the Bahamas in October normally? Thanks for any info :)

I lived in Florida for many years and for the most part October was still very warm. Not the peak of summer warm but rarely if ever cool. There are always fluke situations in the weather, but South Florida was probably on average mid 80s with lows in the low to mid 70s. Thunderstorms, tropical storms and rain happen in October but not nearly as much as they do late summer.

I'd say overall the weather in October down there isn't too bad.

  3. We have a cruise booked for May and I would love for my mom to go with us. I am on hold with Royal but am seeing posts about horrible wait times so thought I'd ask here.

Will Royal add my mom to our existing reservation under the 3rd passenger sails free promotion if I pay the taxes for her sailing? Our cruise still shows availability.

    Thanks!

We went through this very same scenario a couple of weeks ago. They made us cancel and re-book under the new promotion. We wound up paying an additional $410 (including taxes and gratuities) for the 3rd guest. We also had to step down to an interior cabin from a CP balcony on Allure. The deal seemed to be a better price than it would be if there were no promotion at all but I really didn't feel like the third person was free.

We wound up paying $879pp for the first two passengers, plus taxes and gratuities and then only taxes and gratuities for the 3rd. However, I know before the 3rd guest sailing free promo started the interior cabins were more like $749pp and $499 for the 3rd guest. So, again it was a better deal than without the promo, but not quite the $500 savings you see at first glance. It was more like $240.

  4. Doesn't Liberty have the show Saturday Night Fever? Would that sway anyone's opinion as to which ship to choose if itinerary and lengthoif cruise were not part of the equation?

I was going to say this as well. Liberty is the only one with a broadway show. (Saturday night fever) they also had an excellent acrobatics show. We've done both the liberty and independence and we found the entertainment to be far superior on liberty. Other than that they're nearly identical.

  5. I was booked in a CP balcony with my wife for a fantastic rate. Including taxes, gratuities and cruise fare we were at just over 1800 total for the August 31st sailing.

Our travel plans have since changed and we have a 3rd person along for the trip. We downgraded to an interior and are now paying nearly 2300 total even with the 3rd passenger free.

It was an extra $410 and a step down in cabin category. I really don't feel like that 3rd passenger is free as advertised.

I guess part of the increase was I lost a residency discount of $160 and we had a savings certificate for $150 that dropped to $75. We also are paying $193 for that 3rd passenger's taxes and gratuities.

When you figure all of that into to equation it wasn't much more I guess.

I wonder what prices will be when the promo ends

  6. My wife and I ran into Mario in 2 different cruises. once on liberty and once on oasis. Must be pretty fun to live on the ships. Although I guess it could get boring if you did every itinerary over and over. He seemed to be a genuinely nice guy.

  7. I had asked earlier about Indy vs Oasis and I picked Indy. Well, suggested to dh we do both and he agreed! So, we always book a balcony (ocean) but since we're doing both so close, I'm going to just do a balcony to Central Park or the Boardwalk.

Read megacruisers review that the Boardwalk was noisy. Is there a quieter section? Central Park I know would be much quieter.

Suggestions to which one, and if so, which cabin area would you suggest?

We usually do mid ship close to an elevator.

These balcony cabins are new to me!

Thanks in advance for any help!

We stayed on deck 11 close to the forward elevators in a CP balcony. We loved the location. Very quiet and convenient location

  8. Those who have completely transitioned to e-cigs have already stopped smoking. They are ex smokers and should no more be forced into a smoking area than any other non smoker. Nicotine cessation is a separate issue. Should people on the patch be forced to stand in the smoking areas too?

I see your point but second hand vapor is an issue that is coming out more and more... it is not proven 100% harmless. The company I work for recently started distribution of these and we received a lot of information on the safety of their use and basically there have not been sufficient studies and the only studies that conclude they are entirely safe are funded by the companies that make them.

There are preservatives used in them that have been accepted as safe for use in solid food products but we have no idea what the long term effects are from inhaling these chemicals into our lungs.

They may decide it's perfectly safe down the road (information I have read leads me to believe the opposite). I just don't like that people are being made to believe now that it's nothing but water vapor and is completely harmless.... That's simply a factual lie.

I think people take it over board at times thinking they don't want to breathe in second hand vapor but will have 2 heaping plates of bacon from the wind jammer each morning. But then again they choose the bacon and some people choose other unhealthy things. Most of us do something that isn't good for us, but I guess it feels different when it's something unhealthy that you didn't choose to partake and received no enjoyment from.

I have personally never been bombarded with ecig vapor I couldn't easily avoid. I hope others experience the same and don't let it ruin things like cruises for them

  9. Wow! This site is awesome and very helpful. I have a cruise booked on the Freedom in December 2014, will be my first cruise and I am super excited :D! I've been wanting to take a cruise for a long time, but my boyfriend has absolutely zero interest in it. This past May, we took a vacation of his choice....canoe/wilderness adventure to the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota (had to canoe across many lakes carrying our gear and canoe across portages, no running water...so we didn't shower and had to drink lake water. For six days)!

Anyhow, after I went on that trip, I pulled the "I went to the Boundary Waters with you, so you can go on a cruise with me" card ;). We have the Ben & Jerry's sweet booked, as I learned about it through this site. But now after reading so many posts, I'm a little concerned about the noise. I'm pretty sure I will keep the room, just makes me a little nervous that he might be kept up do to noise (which might make him not enjoy the cruise at all which is what he thinks is going to happen anyhow).

Honestly we were in the room on liberty and I didn't notice really substantial noise during any sleeping hours. If you are that concerned maybe bring some earplugs.

Honestly we have been on many cruises and have stayed in many cabin types. I noticed no out of the ordinary noise levels except during parades, 70s party and other promenade events. When it was time to sleep we had no issues.

Have a great trip. ... hopefully it beats the canoe trip drinking lake water.

  10. I agree that it's a great choice and honestly was my best guess. I never thought wicked had a chance, still too new and successful on Broadway.

We were figuring a big name and something that appeals to the masses that the rights would be attainable to. Mama mia was on a short list of shows that fit that bill.

I hope people enjoy it. I get annoyed when people act like the RCI productions are garbage. My wife and i see at least 5 real broadway shows a year and really enjoy the broadway shows on board. I think they are excellent quality.

  11. Hi Melissa, Lynn , Peg and of course stef. My wife jessica and I are also on the October 22nd sailing and really enjoying your review.

We are planning on doing a lot of the DIY shore excursions too and so far your review has been extremely helpful in our planning. Just wanted to say thank you and we will be looking forward to your upcoming details :)

  12. Hi all. I posted in another thread but this one seems to be more current.

We just booked for a Feb 24 2014 out of Habana. Will probably spend two nights before and after.

Managed to get an SB suite and it looks like they are now gone.

Looking forward to seeing parts of Cuba that we haven't seen yet. Ship and crew sound fine. As long as one doesn't expect greatness, one should be fine.

Hope some Americans figure out that they can fly to Jamaica and board the cruise. Yourcubacruise dot com deserves kudos in getting this going.

My wife is of Cuban descent and would absolutely love to do this cruise. I am still thinking it's not possible for Americans to go. I looked through the site and tried to set up a booking and where you would enter your passport information it is not possible to select your citizenship as USA. Many other countries are on the drop down list but USA isn't one of them. Looks like we will be waiting a few more years for the US to lighten the travel restrictions there.

I know there are ways that my wife could technically visit Cuba, I'm not so sure about me travelling with her and if that is allowed. Although, most (if not all) of her family left Cuba in the 1960s and 70s for either the USA or South America. I'm not sure she'd be able to visit without a known relative who is still living there...legally anyway.

  13. When on independence of the seas in march there was a "st. Tropez" deck. All the way forward highest deck. There were some taking advantage (whether it was actually against the rules or not I don't know). I'm not sure if this is only because the indy homeports for most of the year in europe.

  14. I saw it on the news as well. I am a huge Steeler's fan but I looked at the website and the cabin prices were really high. Although it'd be a cool trip to be on I'd likely pass because of the unexciting itinerary and high price tag.

I bet the entertainment would be different and funny. The website says they even have Pittsburgh dad from youtube. I would probably love this cruise. My wife....not so much! lol

  15. It is not a real suite.

It is a cruddy promenade room which they give you a seperate white card to access the lounge and some ice cream coupons.

    Thats it.

No cabanas, pool access, reserved seating, ect.

This is exactly what we experienced as well. Not full suite perks, just the CL and ice cream.

  16. Thank's for the replys. I have read before that u also get to order full meals in your room, do they still do that? Thank's

When we booked the cabin we were not given full suite perks, just the Concierge lounge access. We had a normal seapass, not a gold one and as far as I knew we weren't able to order of the main dining room menu like they do in suites. I know we didn't have access to reserved seating in the theatre's or barefoot beach on Labadee (those all required a gold sea pass). It may have been pretty cramped trying to eat dinner in the room anyway as it's just a standard promenade room in terms of size.

We were in this cabin on February 2012 on the Liberty OTS. I guess it could be different on other ships.

  17. Ok so let me get this right......it is the same price as a prom. room? And u get extra perks, is the room any bigger than a normal prom. room (not that I have ever seen one)? Thank's!

It's the same size as a normal Promenade stateroom, and is the same cost as the rest of the catagory. The difference is the cow decorations everywhere and the perks (free ice cream and CL access)

We loved having the cabin and the perks. I'd absolutely book it again if it was available. When we booked ours it was about 7 months in advance and it was still available.

We are booked on Indy in March, but cabin 6305 was already taken :( . However we got a great price on an oceanview!

  18. My wife and I stayed in a deck 11 CP balcony in September on Oasis. No issues with noise at all. I think there were a few times we could hear CP entertainment, but it was not during hours when we were wanting to sleep. Night time was very quiet, I'd absolutely book a CP balcony again.

As far as noise from the pool deck it was really a non-issue for us and my wife is an afternoon napper on vacation. If you were out on the balcony you could hear the pool commotion, but it was really not obnoxious or loud inside.
