  1. Heading back to Legend.

    Mission accomplished.

What an extraordinary, depressing yet uplifting day. Well worth the travelling time. My guide is exceptional and will post all details in due course. Awesome drive and tour.

And I spat on the ground over where Hitler's bunker was. Result.

Well done Linda, good on ya!! Loving the trip you're taking us on :D

  2. I have just bought it for my Kobo, Essexlass :) I may keep it for my Fre and Ice trip as I already have a queue of stuff to read  Looks good.

That's great Linda, I hope you enjoy it too. I often swap books in the library on cruises as folk usually take good books to read whilst on board :)

  3. Thanks Essexlass2. I have read a lot of Ruth Hamilton's books but not that one. I have just bought it, & it's now on my Kindle! I look forward to reading it.

    Jean.

I hope you enjoy it Jean, I did and my DH is reading it now. I initially thought it was going to be a bit like a Catherine Cookson saga when it was given to me, but it turned out to be quite surprising and a good read.

  4. Wow, thanks folks! I'm inclined to think that perhaps a little bit of lots of these replies are relevant because the story was set in the Second World War period when people didn't have refrigerators and food rationing was in place. I think it would probably have been made with leftovers being the contents of the pie.

I just love your pie Stevedeccaman - if there's any left, that'll do for me!! :D

  5. I'd like to think you are in the minority with your views on OV, Linda. However, we only ever sailed on OV1, two cruises - Eastern and Western Caribbean, and loved her both times. We found everyone dressed for dinner and whilst there was a buffet, it was more like a main dining room than the scramble type buffet on many ships. Passengers on both cruises were on a par with our Thomson friends and the itineraries, entertainment and food were good too.

As you say Linda, it wouldn't do for us all to be the same ......... different strokes for different folks an' all that.

I hope you're feeling much better now too, Linda. :)

  6. Are you sure it's window and not widow's pie. I have heard of that one and it is basically made up with leftovers in a pastry pie as far as I can remember.

No, definitely Window Pie, but I am guessing that it could be a similar recipe and made with leftovers.

Isn't it strange that none of us have ever heard of it, but at least I'm not the only one! Although I live in the south-east, I knew there were lots of different names for various dishes in the north of England, but even my DH who lived up there for 15 years had never heard of it. I thought maybe some of you ladies who live up there would know of it, very strange.

  7. Why have I come back? I started cruising with P&O because i was becoming irritated with the single cabin locations on Thomson ships. Having tried P&O where i can have almost any cabin i want I discovered that they are not as snooty and traditional as i thought and now I cruise with them and don't bother with formal nights.

Anyway, why back to Thomson? I am getting bored at home and there was a 10 week gap between my summer and autumn cruise. Looking for something to fill that gap i chanced on Majesty in august. Majesty's inside single cabins are just fine so i booked a week. Then i noticed another 10 week gap between my autumn and xmas cruise. So I booked a short 5 nighter on Dream in November with free drinks package. Dreams single cabins might be a bit suspect but a short cruise is the best way to try them. Last time I cruised on Dream it was in a suite!.

so basically the cruises i booked are fillers and i probably will not cruise with Thomson again until after next summer.

I will continue to cruise with P&O because my regular cruiser benefits are getting better and I also get a shareholder benefit for each cruise. £150 on board credit for a 14 nighter is worth having. Add to this 8.5% discount for onboard spend etc etc.

Mmm, that's interesting and I can see your point. We would be back with Thomson in the blink of an eye if only they had more balcony cabins. We think that Thomson cruisers are, in general, much friendlier and more laid back. P&O cruisers, again in general, aren't exactly snooty (got nothing to be snooty about IMO) but not quite as friendly either and we'd never touch the P&O adult only ships with a bargepole again as they tend to be a much older age group and whilst we're not exactly youngsters ourselves any more, we do love and enjoy mixing with younger people as well as our own age group.

    Bring back Ocean Village! :D:D

  8. We were docked quite a way from the vaparetto station, but we got on the People Mover, walked round the corner to buy our tickets and then got on the vaparetto.

Its nice to go down the Guidecca Canal to St Marks Square, lots to see there, and then get a vaparetto back from there down the Grand Canal at the end of the day.

Venice is my favourite port, wonderful memories of the whole day as well as both the sail-in and the sailaway :D

  9. I am back from P&O, my last 8 cruises were with them.

What has made you leave P&O? I know why you came back to Thomson, that's a no brainer, but what were your reasons?

On our last cruise, we felt we were "all P&O'd out" and would have happily come back to Thomson had there been more ships with balcony cabins. Instead, we thought we'd try an entirely different cruiseline so booked with Royal Caribbean for our Baltic cruise next month. We're not entirely sure we're going to like it but if we don't try, we won't know.

Just interested to know your thoughts on P&O. :)

  10. Absolutely nothing to do with cruising and for that I apologise, but I do know what a friendly lot you are here on the Thomson board so thought I'd ask my question here.

I've just read a book set in the north of England and there is mention of making a Window Pie. I've never heard of it and can't find it on the internet. Has anyone here ever heard of it and can tell me what it is please?

Maybe they'll do it on one of our cruises so we can all have a taste!! :D
