  1. Hi Anni! My name is John from New York. I am sailing on the NCL Jade from Hamburg in July 17'. I have never been to Hamburg, or Europe for that matter, before. We will be arriving in Hamburg 2 days before sailing. While searching for a pre-cruise hotel, we came across the "25hour Hotel" in Hafen City. The hotel is certainly unique and looks interesting with views of the harbor, but I have some questions. It is not in the center city area, how difficult would it be to get back and forth? My thought on avoiding center city is the G20 Conference taking place in Hamburg the week before our arrival. Not much seems to be in the area of the hotel, Google Earth actually shows construction sites around the hotel. Do you have any knowledge about this hotel and the area it is in?? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and Happy Holidays!!

    Hi John,

I can tell you the 25h Hotel at HafenCity ist a great place to stay with.

It´s very close to the cruise terminal, the new HafenCity, Elbphiharmonie and the city Center.

The week after the G20 conference there will be no hazzles in the City!

But unfortnately Nowegian Jade will not call at HafenCity Cruise Terminal but at Cruise Terminal Altona where you have to go by cab.

  2. I thought of doing this at the end of a cruise. The last day is a sea day and I would like to see a little more of Norway but I don't know if it is adviseable to do it.

That should be no problem in Europe.

You ask the company or just miss the boat. [emoji57]

I once embarked HAL Prinsendam in Oslo instead of Dover.

I had asked beforehand, no problem for the company!

  3. Hi Anni,

I'm going on an MSC cruise out of Hamburg, Germany. I am looking to stay night before we depart cruise at a hotel. Is the port near the city center? I've never been there before so I would like to explore Hamburg. Is there hotel anyone would recommend? I see a Marriott, Hyatt, Radisson and Hilton but can't determine how far they are. I don't want to be far out of the city but yet close to the port. Is far is city center from the port? How much do cabs cost? I need to take a cab from the airport and one to cruise terminal. I called MSC and they don't know the names of hotel that they put people in when they book them. Anyone have any suggestions? No one I know is familiar with this city. Any suggestions on what I should see? I only have that one day.

I looked and not many hotels have airport transfers. We will have enough luggage with us so we decided not to take a train. Taxi would be best.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Suzanne,

unfortunately the MSC Terminal at Steinwerder is about 5 mls or 7 km from the city center away.

Cabs are about € 25 from the airport and to the cruise terminal "Steinwerder".

Oops, there are three cruise terminals in Hamburg

I would recommand the Radisson hotel as it is a scyscraper with lovely views all over the town. http://www.radissonblu.com/hamburg

Grand Hyatt is the best of your hotels mentioned.

  4. We've been now a week in BV #11325 and I must confirm it will block your view a bit!

If one's not interested in slides (f.e. for kids) I would prefer Oasis or Allure.

I did Abyss once. It's been not bad but won't do it again.

Abyss has not been used a lot last week.

So I didn't hear many screamings.

  5. I made the mistake of booking 2 boardwalk rooms on Harmony for March 2017when they opened bookings - great deal... assuming we would have a nice view from 10329 &11329.

From the minute they announced Abyss I have been looking to move from Boardwalk to Ocean View. The price is $1500 more currently - so my choice is to 1) Stick it out 2) Downgrade to a CP Balcony 3) Cancel/Book another cruise 4) Keep watching for a "sale" on Harmony OV rooms.

I think #11329 will be fine, at least I hope so!

In 22 days I will take pics from #11325!

  6. Kiel Question. What is the easiest way from where the cruise ships tie up in Kiel to the Laboe Monument? We will be there in June, and that is a place I want to visit again. My last visit was over thirty years ago when a lot of walking was no problem for me.

    Thanks,

    -John

Supposing you will call at Ostsee Terminal you can take a short walk to "Seegarten" bridge terminal and take the Ferry boat to "Laboe" by line F1

  7. ...As GradUT suggests, it would be a good idea to contact the Tourist Office to find out exactly what will be open if you plan to go shopping. Hamburg being a tourist destination, especially during the Anniversary festival, it may have different rules on public holidays.

I don't think that on May 5th (Christi Himmelfahrt) many shops will be open! :-(

  8. My question I am sure ha

We are cruising on Princess and docking in Hamburg. Is there anything near the port area or easy transportation for exploring the area?

    Thank you

    Kim

Miniature World is very unique and is worth a stop. The U-bahn works well to get around.

If you are interested in model railroad the "Miniatur Wunderland" is for you!

Besides U-Bahn you will find busses and S-Bahn as public transport.

A day ticket (€ 12) is good for FIVE.

  9. Hi Lynda, thank you for your appreciation.

The public transport coverage of the city is excellent and, as Hamburg is based on the river, the ferries are a great way to sightsee and also to use as a means of HOHO transport.

The most popular river Elbe ferry boat line is # 62 from "St. Pauli Landungsbrücken" to "Finkenwerder" which you can do as a roundtrip.

    Day ticket for 1 person is € 6 and up to 5 persons it's € 11,20.

  10. We are on a Princess Cruise that is docking in Hamburg and would like to go into Berlin. Is that too long of a ride, are there tour companies that would take you from Hamburg to Berlin?

Is the Berlin Wall really worth the trip or would we be better seeing the sights of Hamburg? This is our first trip to Germany.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

    Kathy:D

    Kathy,

maybe you've heard for 25 yrs there is no more a Berlin Wall :D

Take the ICE train to Berlin and you won't regret it!

Hamburg is a nice city but there is much more to be seen in Berlin!

I' ve guided some friends in Berlin, who called at Hamburg on the Golden P. ten yrs ago.

We had a wonderful day in capital city and came back to Hamburg close to midnight.

    Gruß aus Hamburg
