  1. I don't 'get what I pay for' on NCL, like I do on RCI and Princess...

Since I pay full fare for two, when booking solo, those lines give me double loyalty points on all bookings. NCL doesn't.:(

I’m in the same boat (ship?) as you there as I’m a relatively frequent solo cruiser, but it’s kind of two separate issues. Anyone booking a sail away rate, whether it’s solo or not, won’t get any perks nor the insider double points.

I do agree with your point though, and wish NCL would offer double points for double payment to solos, at least on non-studio rooms.

  2. I was going to book one of those Insider offers, and when I selected an inside cabin, it then offered one of the perks as a bonus, and also listed the sailaway rate, with no bonus....

So since it was ambiguous, I called NCL, and the agent confirmed, no double points, even on an Insider, if sailaway rate is selected....

On the other hand, if you choose one of the bonuses, you get that bonus and the double points....but pay a lot more for it....

As they say, “you get what you pay for.” If you want to get a great deal and just get yourself on the ship, the sail away rate is typically amazing by comparison. But if you want the rewards, your price is going up.

  3. I can only speak for studios on Breakaway and Escape, but to answer your questions:

    - None of the cabins exit directly into the lounge, but in hallways just like any other cabin. There are then doors at the end of the hall to either stairs into the lounge or the lounge itself. Noise was not an issue in any of the studio cabins I stayed in. Check out the deck plans for each ship and this will make more sense.

    - Escape and Breakaway do not have USB ports, and you’ll need a converter for European sockets.

    - Yes you can order room service, same as other cabins. And same as other cabins you’ll be charged a room service fee for any orders besides the “door hanger menu” breakfast

Any other questions, feel free to ask!

  4. Just out of interest regarding the studios on NCL, i have seen many videos of them on Youtube and they look right up my street.

One thing though, i have not seen on any of these videos, anywhere to sit other than the bed. Are there any chairs in these cabins so one can sit and read a book, or is it the bed only? For me this would be a dealbreaker, regards.

There is not, the only seating besides the bed is a pull-out vanity stool. I think the argument in favor is that you have the studio lounge at your disposal, which on my 3 solo trips in the studios is typically quiet and has nice seating for reading (or doing my sudoku and crossword puzzles)

  5. Nice pics. Am working on Alaska again...love HAL because Sitka is often a port.

It doesn’t have Sitka as a port, but I sailed Celebrity Solstice in 2016 to Alaska and it was fantastic. The ports were great, but the ship’s working relationship with the Corning Glass Blowing workshop and their onboard demonstrations was perfect entertainment with the glory of Alaska as a backdrop.

  6. Incinerator fires are actually fairly common on ships. During the day, the crew bring down the garbage collected around the ship, and the crew then sort the garbage, and paper and cardboard are tossed into a shredder. This shredded cardboard and paper is then stored in a "silo" that can hold 5-6 cubic meters of material, until such time as the incinerator can be run (not in port). The problem is when the crew misses something in their sorting, and something like an AA battery is sent through the shredder, and creates a spark when being shredded (yes, it will shred a battery). This spark lands on the shredded material in the silo, gets buried under other material added to the silo, and lies smoldering until the incinerator starts to work, and the material in the silo is fed into the incinerator. The smolder gets closer and closer to the surface of the garbage, until it finally reaches enough oxygen to burst into flames and the material in the silo catches. The silos are equipped with fire hose sprinkler connections and steam smothering devices, just for these instances.

Fires onboard are not a "new ship" thing, they are a bit more common than most know about, since in many cases the "code bravo" call will only go to crew areas, or will be at night when few pax are out in public spaces, and the announcement doesn't go to pax cabins.

You recently crossed 13,000 posts and I can honestly say that in my time on CC all the ones I've read have been incredibly informative, so thank you for that!

  7. A few random observations from last August:

    - Check out the Harpoon brewery during your two days in the seaport

    - If you're driving, drop someone off with the luggage at the terminal entrance before going to park, otherwise you're hauling your bags down the block with you

    - Forgetting you put your golf divot tool in your carry-on will get you taken aside for not-random-at-all additional screening

    - Unless you plan to have one of the earlier check-in times, finding somewhere to sit in the waiting area can be a challenge. We checked in around 10:30a and were standing for about an hour.

    - As someone else said, the main dining room is open for lunch, and was pretty quiet but very good. We ended up with seats by the window and got to watch people boarding and all the food and luggage being loaded

  8. In lieu of an organized tour, I'd research some places of personal interest in Hamilton. The entire downtown area is relatively small, it's only 3-4 blocks from the ferry dock to the top of the hill and City Hall and the well-curated National Art Gallery. The day we went to Hamilton it had rained all morning so it was incredibly hot and humid and the gallery provided not only terrific local art as well as a great comparative art exhibit, but much needed air-conditioned bliss for an hour!

  9. I'm allowed to vacation how I see fit. Please quote where on this thread I said I was perfect or only make decisions that don't harm the environment. I'll wait

    Careful what you wish for!

I’m perfect and only make decisions that don't harm the environment.

That is, of course, just a joke to lighten the mood. I agree with you, plastic straws are an environmental hazard and should be banned in favor of biodegradable alternatives, as straws are still necessary for some types of beverages/situations/preferences

  10. It costs NCL next to nothing or perhaps even nothing for them. They most likely have them provided from alcohol and soda vendors as part of the contract. Same thing with hotels and resorts

Plus, and take this however large a grain of salt you’d like because I used Amazon to get a price reference, but 200 16oz plastic cups with plastic straws is $38 and 200 16oz biodegradable cups with biodegradable is $40.

I know there are major matters of scale here, but it would seem the market overall is adjusting to the fact that people want more environmentally friendly products

  11. I agree...someone needs to invent a better recyclable straw because the paper ones suck.

We are doing Alaska this summer and will be bringing our own straws.

My company ditched plastic straws a couple of years ago, and after a brief trial of the paper straws they switched to compostable/biodegradable straws that are just like plastic. So much so that people thought they had reversed the decision and gone back to plastic until the straw wrappers changed to say compostable

  12. Within the first day I usually break a lounge chair. I call in my steward and concierge, offer them each a jagged piece of metal from said deck chair, and place a crisp hundy stick on the floor between them, and let them fight for my amusement. I typically repeat the exercise on Day 6 with the winner and my butler, upping the prize to $300...

Oh, also I ask for a couple of cups of the snack/nut mix they serve at the bars to be left in my room to enjoy before dinner.

  13. He also explained that after their European run the Epic would not be returning to Port Canaveral. He said that port just wasn’t big enough to handle the number of people. She will be porting in Puerto Rico starting in November. [/color]

Curious what was meant by this; was his implication that Port Canaveral wasn’t big enough to handle embark/disembark for 4,100 passengers a week? Or that PC wasn’t drawing enough interest to get 4,100 to cruise each week?

I only ask because my trip through Port Canaveral struck me as it being one of the larger cruise ports I had seen in the US
