  1. I haven't taken the tour but the website says 3 hours and is $69.99.

We are thinking of taking this tour when we are in sanjuan in a week. Is the start and end of tour with in walking distance of the cruise port? Is 70$ too much for this.??

The tour was about three hours. It was well worth the money. It is within walking distance from the port where Carnival cruises out of. You get to go to six different places & try different things(mofongo, empandas, etc.). It gave me ideas where I would like to go for my next visit to San Juan. Went back to one of the restaurants the next evening for dinner & drinks.

  2. Has anyone taken the Flavors of San Juan Food Tour and if so how was it?

Took the tour in November. It was awesome. You go to six different restaurants & sample different foods. The only alcoholic drink that is included is the pina colada at Barrachina. If you want alcoholic drinks, you have to pay for them separately. The tour guide tells you about the history of Old San Juan as you walk from place to place. I would highly recommend this tour.

  3. How was the country side experience? Would you recommend it? I am considering that one.

I also checked out the Seavis tour, I would pick that if I wasn't taking my kids, but one of my children would not have the stamina for it.

I would recommend it. You get to see life for the people outside of LaRomana. Stops include going to a nursery to see plants that are turned into stuff(e.g cinnanon, etc.), a sugar cane field, a Papito house, & a souviner shop. While at the Papito house, you get to sample fruit & coffee made in the Dominician Republic(The coffee was the best I ever had.) & see how cigars are made. The guides are informative about life there.

  4. Anyone else considering the "two unique sailings" for 2014?? I am really interested in the Southern Caribbean one....the itinerary looks fantastic...AND it's my birthday that day. (I think that's how I will justify "needing" this cruise. :D

    Anyone else look into them??

I booked the San Juan to Miami repositioning cruise when I found out about it. Glad I listened to my gut instinct & booked this cruise when I did. The ports is what caught my attention.

  5. Went on that excursion in November. I do not remember seeing a step up. It was about two or three steps on the truck if I remember correctly. The tour operators were helpful in getting people in & out of the safari truck. You will enjoy the tour. Found it to be educational about the people of the Dominican Republic. Hope this information helps. I will see if I have a picture of it. Will post it when I find it.

  6. sounds like a great birthday gift to me. one of these I am going to do something like this.. maybe 2016 because my family has already started talking about a family reunion cruise in 2015.. in either case.. Enjoy!!

I hope you do get the chance to do that. :)

  7. I looked at that cruise a few days ago (SJ-MIA). Love the itinerary. With the exception of Grand Turk, those are all new ports for me. I am seriously considering it as my first solo cruise. Due to the time of year, I can't get anyone to go with me.

A few ladies on another thread already booked this as a solo, so there will be a few solos on this cruise.

That was how I got into solo cruising. Could not find anyone to go with me. All of my friends are either married, have children or both. Decided I was not going to let the lack of travel companions hold me back. I booked the Splendor cruise yesterday. Went to Grand Turk on the Conquest repositioning cruise from New Orleans to San Juan. The other places(other than San Juan & Grand Turk) will be new to me.

  8. Will 2014 bring a solo cruise for me? The answer is yes. Thinking about booking the Carnival Splendor repositioning cruise from San Juan to Miami or taking the Carnival Dream from New Orleans(Leaning more towards Splendor.). It will be a belated 40th birthday present to myself two months after my birthday. :D

  9. We took the Flavors of San Juan tour during our pre-cruise stay. It was excellent. I heard that it no longer includes alcohol beverages, perhaps Blueangel can clarify.

The only alcohol drink that was included was when we were at Barrachina. They served pina coladas in a small cup. It was big enough to get a taste. Went back to Barrachina the next night & got a normal size pina colada with dinner. If you want alcohol, you have to pay for it at the restaurants.

  10. Has anyone ever taken an authentic food tour of old San Juan. We found one online that gets pretty good reviews. Just wondering if anyone from a cruise has ever done anything like that?

I did the Flavors of San Juan dinner tour while I was in San Juan last month. It was really good. You go to six different restaurant & try different foods & drinks. As you walk through Old San Juan to each place, your guide will inform you of the different buildings & their historical reference. Loved it. I would do this tour again if I ever spend more than one day in San Juan.

  11. I am happy to be leaving on the Carnival Magic the day after tomorrow. This will be my 3rd solo cruise. I have a greater love of cruising and flexibility of time than anyone else I know, so I will go alone if find a great deal. This cruise is 7 days and was just $459 for an inside cabin before tax and gratuities! I could not pass it up when I found it two weeks ago.

The only awkwardness I feel cruising solo is at dining time. The first cruise, I had anytime dining. I went alone almost every night and the crew would say how sad it was that I dined alone. And the tables were so close that I had to listen to the conversations of the couples on both sides of me.

The second cruise, I stuck to the lido buffet because of the first experience. This time I am going to try late assigned dining to see how it goes. Hopefully, I will be seated with a friendly group of solo travelers!

Just got back from my 3rd solo cruise on the Carnival Conquest. All three times I have cruised solo, I have had late seating. Carnival usually tries to seat solos with other solos. The only time I was not seated with other solos was on my 2nd solo cruise. Was seated with a couple & their adult son. Still had a great time at dinner. Hope you have an awesome cruise on the Magic. Bon Voyage. :)

  12. I was looking for some clarification on when the change in your VFIP level occurs. Does it occur at the end of the cruise in which you qualify or during the cruise in which you qualify?

I am currently at 24 points (nothing like being on the cusp!) and was just curious whether I would be considered red or gold on my upcoming cruise.

    Thank you!

You will be considered gold when you board for your cruise. Had 23 points before my cruise two weeks ago. Now to work on getting the platinum. Happy cruising. :)
