  1. If there was a need to off load fuel it would not be into fuel trucks on a pier. Two fuel trucks are not going to carry a lot of fuel especially the heavy bunker fuel that these ships use. That type of a fuel transfer would be onto a fuel barge alongside the ship. The amount of fuel that would need to be off loaded to make the ship light enough to be tugged would be more than two fuel trucks could carry.

Great point! They are probably just topping off the oil ;)

Now have you seen any CO2 trucks? That is probably what you are still missing

  2. We have no idea how CCL maintains their ships.

Ever gone on a behind the fun tour? The chief engineer that I met was a stickler and everything was in tip top shape and as an engineer myself - I was studying stuff hard. These guys are on these ships for years and it was practically his child he was talking about.

Anytime you put man and machine together - something will break - it is just the nature of the beast no matter how much you try.

Funny how much everyone is worrying about how horrible this must be for the poor passengers and how much money they should get when I am guessing 95% of them are happy and enjoying another fun day in port.

  3. Everyone seems to be in a good mood. There was not a long line at guest services last night as some may expect. This morning passengers are waiting in line for breakfast and the energy seems to be positive. Since last night, the hotel aspect of the ship has been fully functional and the restaurants and bars stayed open into the late evening.

Thats funny...if you listen to the news this morning it sounded as though there was a raging inferno. They even said the Coast Guard had to come help extinguish the blaze.

  4. Which will create a conundrum for those that embarked last week and are looking to debark. They may be getting an extended vacation.

I have had one cruise cut short due to weather...I am still waiting to get "stuck" on a boat for an extended vacation!

  5. Why would they need rooms? According to the latest statement, passengers have been allowed to reboard. So if they do cancel the remaining days, they can just allow people to stay on the ship until they can fly them out.

Good chance they also have a bunch of staff folks, mechanics, engineers, PR people, etc that immediately got on a plane and headed down. They will also need a place to stay.

  6. Seems that way

Unfortunately the customer service desk will be loaded with folks demanding a free cruise and demanding a chance to go to the bridge and steer the ship and wear the Master's uniform. Guessing they will give everyone $x of OBC and x% off a future cruise. I am confident they will handle it right and folks will be taken care of appropriately.

  7. CARNIVAL LIBERTY STATEMENT

    September 7, 2015 – 9 pm EDT

While docked in St. Thomas today Carnival Liberty experienced an engine fire that was extinguished by the ship’s automated suppression system. There were no injuries to guests or crew. All guests remained ashore through this evening while the ship's technical systems were evaluated. Presently, all hotel services including air conditioning, elevators, toilets, galleys, etc. are fully functional.

Crew was permitted to reboard at approximately 5:30 p.m. EDT to prepare for the anticipated embarkation of guests. At approximately 8 p.m. EDT the U.S. Coast Guard gave permission for guests to reboard.

Dinner is being served in the main dining rooms and Lido, and a variety of entertainment and activities are available.

A team of experts is in the process of conducting a deeper technical assessment of the affected engine room that is expected to be completed in the morning. At this time it has not been determined when the ship will depart St. Thomas.

We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and appreciate their patience.

Carnival Liberty is on the second day of a seven-day Caribbean cruise that departed San Juan yesterday with 3,346 guests and 1,150 crew.

  8. My guess this is going to take a while even after the crew gets on board. Think about how much clean up work has to take place and how much work to "restart" a ship. It happened when just about all of the food venues were open. Everything sitting out has gone bad and has to be disposed of and cleaned up. Likely bars are a mess as well. If they shut off power to certain areas, it could be even more work to get things going. Also it was mentioned that some folks didn't "card out" when they left the ship. That will likely make boarding take even longer.

I'm thinking folks down there should sit back and relax as it is going to be a long evening. Glad Carnival is taking good care of folks.

  9. They will never put you in harms way, but you may get a little seasick. I was on the Conquest once where the pool just about emptied itself as it swished back and forth. Last year on the Elation they had to put barf bags out at each stairwell.....but that is pretty rare.

  10. Thanks for the comments....just looking at a couple of unique cruises...there are a couple of repos - Elation and Triumph along with a few longer ones on the Dream this year that look good. I figured they would be great, was just curious hearing real experiences from some folks. My guess is the crew probably likes it. Last 5 day I was on I struck up a conversation with a crew member. She told me how much they hated the 4 day cruises because it is generally a booze cruise and the drunks are obnoxious. I found that kinda interesting....

  11. Just curious your experience when a cruise has a one off itinerary - specifically a ship that normally does 4/5 days and has a one off 8-10 day.

So the dining room is used to the same short rotation of menus, but now has to have different food for longer periods....the capt and crew is used to going to the same ports every few days, but now has some new ports.....

I can imagine it is a challenge for the crew after doing years of the short cruises to do this kind of one off. In your experience, do those cruises go ok? We are pretty go with the flow, but I do want some good food!

  12. Question for you guys on 7422.....We didn't have a great experience with the aft balcony on the Dream. It was either full sun or raining and the way the back of the ship was sloped, the rain just rolled down onto the balcony.

On this room though it appears you can go to the side of the ship and you are covered? Is that correct? Is the overhang large enough?

  13. So my wife wants a robe to take home next cruise....I was online ordering my bottles of water (sigh)...anyway I saw you can purchase them ahead of time.

Is there any advantage to purchasing head of time? They are $50...same price on he boat? tip/tax? Make a difference? I thought I saw somewhere that the cabin steward gets a commission on them or something, so thinking I would be better getting it from him if the same price....

  14. I am pretty sure I have this correct, but please help me verify.

61 = number of points I have as of today

My next 7 day cruise will give me 68 points

so on the next 7 day.... 68+7 = 75 points. So If I understand it correctly, this booking will in fact be my milestone cruise. (Throwing me off just a bit because of the exact number of 75...kinda like do you throw on 3 or say 3 and then throw ;) )

    Correct?

  15. We like to do the Elation off and on. It is a nice change from the big boats. We are doing our 4th this fall on her. I find the atmosphere and crowds a little more laid back....shorter lines....and you get to know a lot more people. I also find the food better and the crew outstanding. I think they know they have to try harder because they are missing some of the amenities of the big boats.

  16. Just got off today. I noticed a few things that appeared different than the last time...or they could have been made at another time but I didnt recall...I tend to pay attention to the little quirky stuff lol....but primary these are cosmetic or behind the scenes as was stated:

    - Room now had a thermostat - no more dial on the celling

    - The box in the corner was there, but the light up corner "art work" was gone...just a small fluorescent lamp

    - The small medallions with the face on it that was in every stairwell up and down in the center of the decorative boxes have been mostly removed and replaced with a flat plate. I liked those guys, but people pushed on them and it messed them up. There are still a few hidden around though.

    - The Mikado lounge got updated fabrics and wall coverings. Much brighter

    - A backup generator is resting up by the funnel. It appears to be partially ready, but still more wiring to do based on all the cables lying up there.

    - Added an automated prize machine to the arcade, along with more "ticket" type games

    - Removed the nightly Sushi and replaced with a taste bar

    - Added a small Cherry on Top shop where the formal shop used to be

    - Updated many of the dining and bar computer point of sale terminals

    - Added an additional WOK cook and now have a total of 7 cook surfaces

    - Currently replacing all the lifejackets

    - Minor elevator upgrades on some cars, but still very slow with the exception of the atrium elevators that seem much easier to get.

    - Some carpet updates and some other lighter paint in some areas

    - Color changing signs appeared to get upgraded...brighter and faster color changing.

    - LED celling lighting added to several areas.

    - Staff got an updated lounge and partially covered sun deck on the bow.

    Still needing attention -

    - Comedy club need upholstery work - tears, stains ,etc. Also still has several broken decorations

    - Jekyll & Hyde Disco got several upgrades a couple of dry docks ago - but got nothing noticable on this one. Was surprised they didn't repair many of the non-working decorative lighting

    - Library upholstery is just nasty

    - Many small decorative lights are still not working around the ship or have noticeable bulbs that are not working

Overall - they appear to be keeping her looking fresh and updated and was happy with what I saw.
