    • why is my room unlocked when I get near the cabin?  I want to unlock the door when I get closer!  Some cruisers tell me they had a terrible time trying to figure how to lock the door when they left the cabin.

I got off the Royal last week.  I discovered that my medallion unlocked the room long before I got there.  My husband's unlocked right as we walked to the door (his was in a pocket and mine was around my neck in a lanyard).  If I held the medallion in my hand, it didn't read it as readily as if it was just hanging around my neck.  I've also read that as the batteries drain, the doors don't open as quickly.

I have much newer information than from early June.  I did post it on another more current thread.

Thank you!  I've been bouncing around searching from thread to thread and landed here.  The summary was most helpful (buy before if you are not Elite or wait if you are).  That is all I was looking for.  🙂

I was uncertain as to which pricing was going to be best and covered myself by pre-booking.  In future, I will just wait until boarding.  Won't be worse and can use OBC to offset the cost.

I have been holding off on prebooking the wifi for our Alaskan cruise on the Royal this Saturday.  I am hoping that once on board I can get an elite discount that would make it cheaper than the $59.99 to prebook.  Are you saying that is the case?  Ours is a 7 day.

Thank you - I had been waiting.

My question:  I scanned in my Passport and it gave me the "green light" to take the pic....

Would the app tell me if it's not readable or not good enough?

I can see it okay - but, It's not real clear or doesn't seem big enough

If you will notice, it reads the information at the bottom (the part they scan in their computer) and not actually the photo, etc.  When I did mine, it highlighted that information.  They have your picture in their database and it pulls up with your information.  The photo you are uploading is for their security when you get on and off the ship.

  5. I just received my medallion for my Alaska cruise.  I want to customize the little paper part.  Princess lets you purchase some that say "birthday" or "anniversary."  I have seen where others have customized with where they are going.  Is there a template for me to be able to customize this?  I've been Googling for a while and haven't found anything.  I know I could take it out and trace it on paper, but a template would help me align things better.

  6. Thanks for the advice, maybe I'll give Princess a call tomorrow to see what it is they're exactly offering. I still find it weird they only gave a 1/2 person charge but if the 3rd person's free like you think it might be, then we might jump on this!

@FLCruise7 - sounds like you got a great deal on the suite, congrats!

There is no extra charge for the third. We had three in a room and only had to pay for two to upgrade.

  7. Island, 5/30, 7 day, Balcony (BE), $79, Mini Suite (MD)

Sailing on the Island May 30 - Northbound Vancouver to Whittier. Had E736, a BE balcony - last balcony in the row, had a great aft view also. Received an offer on Friday, May 18, for a mini suite for $79pp and grabbed it. So now we are located on Caribe towards the back of the ship.

On my Alaska cruise on Star leaving on 5/26 they offered an upsell last month of $249 pp for an oceanview to balcony. They STILL have balconies available and have not budged on the $249 pp. We leave in three days.

  8. We almost had this experience. Hubby and I were headed to Mexico. We had an early flight, so were spending the night at the airport two hours from home.

The morning before heading to the airport, I had to pull the passports out of our safe to fill out boarding passes. Instead of putting my husband's back in his travel wallet, I laid it on top. As we were leaving for the airport, we did a check to make sure we had everything. He saw the travel wallet and assumed his passport was inside. We got to the hotel at 10:00 pm and he did another check and discovered his passport was NOT in his wallet.

We made the 4 hour round trip in total silence. He being mad at me for not putting it back where he had it. Me being mad at him because I ASKED if he had it and he said "yes" without actually looking.

Lesson learned. Now when we are ready to go, we put everything in the car and before driving away pull out our passport and make sure it is actually ours AND it isn't expired.

  9. Sure, someone can forget a passport, but if they bring their wallet, and the OP's post doesn't say this guy forgot that too, one should have appropriate ID to board a ship.

You need proof of citizenship AND government ID. Having a driver's license does not make you an American citizen. "Acceptable proof of citizenship includes an original or certified copy of a government issued birth certificate (raised seal and signature) and a laminated government issued picture ID (typically, driver's license), Consular Report of Born Abroad Certificate, or a Certificate of Naturalization."

  10. So I'm imagining that the current itinerary is identical to next week'ss, where the Getaway was in Honduras today and Belize tomorrow.

The earthquake was in the evening; the boat likely was already back out to sea, and shouldn't have been affected too much from tremors.

There is a possible chance for tsunami waves up to ~1 m (~3.3 ft) in that area would affect the beaches/coastline, but shouldn't affect the islands and coast too much.

    However, this is still speculation.

My sister is on the Carnival Magic. They were in Belize yesterday and headed to Roatan when the earthquake hit. There was no effect on the ship at all.

  11. Taxi from the port to the airport is faster than waiting for an Uber to arrive. There has always been a whole line of taxis just past where the embarkation bins for luggage are. Well organized, driver tosses in your luggage and away you go.

At least an Uber/Lyft is a flat fee. Every time we get a taxi at the airport, they manage to go the long or wrong way and add $5 to the trip. Last time we literally sat in line to get out while the meter counted up another $5. We insisted we wanted to just get out where we were (we were already at the terminal), but he held our luggage hostage until we got to the front of the line.

  12. One more table we still talk about was a two week Celebrity cruise in 2003. It was my 18 year old daughter and I, a middle aged couple (Jim & Sue), and two couples in their late 20's, early 30's. Because this was a two week cruise in the middle of a school year, the average age of the cruisers was about 80. Because it was a Celebrity cruise, everyone was expected to be refined and formal.

We were at an 8 top, with two seats being a cushy bench, and the rest had hard chairs. Jim and Sue would get in line at the door a half hour before dinner every night to make sure they were first and could claim the benches. They sat a little higher than us and seemed to act that way too. Jim bragged about the rolexes he had, and Sue bragged about the many cruises they had been on. You couldn't tell from looking at them that they were "special."

Daughter and I still refer to this as the cruise with the BEST TABLEMATES EVER. We had so much fun despite Jim & Sue occasionally being embarrassing. Jim was ok and tried to joke with us, but Sue was never happy about anything. She complained about the tablecloths. "On PRINCESS, they don't have frayed tablecloths." She complained that there were not enough vegetables on the menu. "On PRINCESS you get vegetables." On and on they complained. They were at the pursuers desk complaining constantly about everything (we would see them or they would tell us about it at dinner).

The staff tried REALLY hard to give them everything they wanted. By the third day, the maitre'd would present us with a large platter every night of every vegetable you could imagine (like at least 12 selections). They changed the table cloths. There was no pleasing them.

In the meantime, the rest of us had more and more fun as the days progressed. We were constantly joking or telling amusing stories, so much that the tables around us would give us dirty looks because we were so unrefined. We are probably on a thread somewhere about the rude Americans who were laughing during dinner.

On the last breakfast, Jim and Sue didn't show up. One of the guys from our table found out from our waiter that Jim & Sue didn't leave a single cent as a tip for the 14 nights of service.

Anyway, even now if something isn't quite right on a cruise (a spot or blemish), daughter and I get our Sue voice and say, "Oh, but on PRINCESS....." :')

  13. My husband and I did our first cruise together in 2010. We had TD at an 8 top. Two chairs remained empty the entire cruise. It was he and I, the story couple (Mia and Dan) and two others. Mia was a very loud and domineering woman and Dan was quiet and meek. My hubby had never been on a cruise with a sommelier, so when Mia requested wine, I was quietly telling hubby about the process. I explained about how the sommelier makes a production of presenting the wine and how he has his special little golden necklace cup where he gets to taste it first. I said, "It's just a formality. I have never seen anyone refuse a bottle."

Well, when it was Mia's turn to try the wine, her face puckered up into a disgusted pinch and she said, (LOUDLY), "Oh, NO, NO, NO, NO." So....the sommelier tried again. New bottle of wine. Same process. Same disgusted look. "Oh, NO, NO. I like my wine like I like my men. STRONG!" (Hubby and I could hardly contain our giggles).

She was outspoken about EVERYTHING and Dan just quietly took it. She was giving me advice on what I should LET my man do, etc.

During the course of the week, the two people across the table changed almost every night, but hubby and I and Mia and Dan stayed constant. Hubby would fortify himself with scotch before dinner, but we managed to make it through to the end.

Seven years later when something isn't to our liking, we pinch our faces up and say, "Oh, NO, NO, No, No....." and laugh.

  14. Several years ago, I did a cruise by myself. On the first night, I discovered that I had been placed at a table for two in the middle of the dining room (no one joined me). After dinner, I asked the Maitre'd if I could move to a larger table with a group, so I wouldn't have to eat alone. He looked and said he had a table for 8 that had seat for one more. I asked if the table was a "fun" one...just joking. He told me it was and that he had walked by and everyone was laughing and having a good time.

The next night I arrived at the table for 8. I was the only one there. Eventually the waiter asked me if anyone from my party would be joining me. I said, "I am alone. What happened to the people from last night?" He told me no one had shown up the previous night either.

I spent the rest of the cruise eating at the buffet.

  15. We sail on the Jan. 14th Western Caribbean Regal cruise. I am excited about this new step forward in cruising. I hope we get a medallion but I doubt we will if the same blocks of staterooms are the chosen few. With that being said, I understand with any new technology there comes quite a bit of testing (trial and error) so if we do get the medallion, I understand there will be issues in receiving it. They HAD to announce it was coming, otherwise those that were STUCK with the testing of the medallion would be complaining. I am amazed at all the comment from folks that seem to be surprised at the setbacks so far. I don’t know of anything of this magnitude that goes off without a hitch and I think to expect it would is a bit naive. Don’t get me wrong, I would love for it to do all they claimed but never did I really expect it. That just isn’t how something new works!

I'm on that one as well. We booked specifically because we wanted to experience the Medallion Class. Hope they are up and running.

  16. My DH and I are in the process of becoming Scuba certified for our March 25th cruise on the Carnival Vista. This isn't our first cruise (more like 7th), but it is out first time diving! I'm very overwhelmed on which stop(s) to choose for diving, and I'm hoping you guys can help me! Carnival offers virtually no diving options as excursions.

We are going to Grand Turk, La Romana DR, Aruba, and Curacao. We want to dive at 1-2 locations, and if the whales are still in migration, we'd LOVE to see them.

    Any pointers for the beginners?

Friends and I use the Dive Bus in Curacao. (http://www.thedivebus.com) They picked us up and we got to do escorted shore dives.

  17. I have never been on a back to back cruise where the second muster drill was waived. We always had to attend and we have done btb on Princess, HAL, Ponant and Hapag Lloyd.

We did a b2b in November on the Royal and got a letter stating that we did not have to attend the muster drill on the second leg. Also, we booked them as two separate cruises (not a 14 day) and they still let us miss the second part.

  18. I dove with Allison too and she's good, and went with an outfit called Blue Angel a couple years ago that did a very good job with a great dive master but the boat was a bit slow.

We LOVE Blue Angel. My daughter got certified with them when we spent a week in cozumel a few summers ago.

Last time we used Dive With Martin. Their equipment is included in the deal, and they were great too.
